Max has canceled the political drama series The Girls On the Bus after one season.

The decision comes just two weeks after the Season 1 finale of the series was released on the streaming platform.

“While Max will not be moving forward with a second season of The Girls on the Bus, we are grateful to have partnered with immensely talented Amy Chozick, Julie Plec, Rina Mimoun, as well as the teams at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television,” said Max in a statement. “We are so proud of this powerful story of found family and the celebration of journalism, in all its forms. We thank them and our unrivaled cast for all their incredible work and collaboration.”

The series, starring and produced by Melissa Benoist, is an adaptation of Chozick’s best-selling Hillary Clinton campaign memoir Chasing Hillary.

Its cancellation is not surprising considering Season 1 never made it onto Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings. According to Deadline, however, the show appeared multiple times on Max’s own Top 10 list.

The Girls On the Bus was created by Plec and Chozick and centered on a journalist Sadie McCarthy (Benoist) who is hellbent on reviving a lost era of campaign reporting by covering a presidential candidate for a big news outlet. Sadie competes and eventually bonds with three other journalists on the bus, Grace (Carla Gugino), Lola (Natasha Behnam), and Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore).

Although Season 1 stayed true to the show’s title, future seasons were to expand the story beyond the campaign bus. The first season followed the primaries and ended with a cliffhanger that would have kicked things off in Season 2 when the reporters were to move from a bus to a plane for the general election.

Also starring in the series are Brandon Scott, Griffin Dunne, Mark Consuelos, and Scott Foley.

The series was executive produced by Chozick, Plec, and Rina Mimoun along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Marcos Siega. Jesse Peretz executive produced and directed the show’s pilot, which was produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

The Girls On the Bus was originally ordered by Netflix but then moved to the CW for development before eventually landing at Max.
