Netflix is getting their head in the (video) game.

The streaming giant has announced yet another high-profile partnership — this time with Swedih video game developer Mojang Studios — to create a CG-animated series based on the fan favorite video game Minecraft.

Fans of both the video game and the streaming giant may remember Minecraft: Story Mode, a choose your own adventure series that was released in 2018 and later removed from Netflix in 2022.

The promo video released Thursday for the upcoming project does not tease too much intel. However, Variety reports that Netflix revealed the new show “will feature an original story with new characters, showing the world of Minecraft in a new light.” While Netflix and Mojang Studios are joining forces on the production front, the animation will be done on behalf of WildBrain, per Deadline.

For those unfamiliar with the game, in a description on its website, simply put, “Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and having adventures.”

The reveal arrives in light of the 15th anniversary of the first Minecraft game, per Variety. According to a post shared on the game’s website, they just “wrapped up [their] 15-day long 15th anniversary celebration.”

Outside of Netflix, the game is also inspiring a Warner Bros. film with a reportedly star-studded cast featuring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, per Deadline. In the film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on April 4, 2025, “the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld,” per IMDb.
