A bold new chapter in Star Wars is coming to Disney+. New Star Wars show The Acolyte will take fans back in time, 100 years before the events of the prequel trilogy, to an era where the Jedi reign supreme and evil is a whisper from the past…or is it? The whole point of The Acolyte is that evil was allowed to fester under the Jedi’s noses without them being none the wiser. The series hinges on a mysterious Force user named Mae (Amandla Stenberg) targeting and killing Jedi, a crime that not only puts the lives of the Jedi at risk, but casts their superiority in doubt.

The Acolyte was created by Leslye Headland, the writer-director behind such critically acclaimed projects as Russian Doll and Bachelorette. Headland is an avid Star Wars geek and she uses The Acolyte to explore corners of lore hitherto not seen in live action. The series not only takes us to the High Republic era, but introduces us to new worlds, species, and characters like Lee Jung-jae’s Sol, Manny Jacinto’s Qimir, and Dafne Keen’s Jecki Lon. The show also contains tons of Easter eggs for fans of Star Wars books and comics. For instance, fan favorite character Vernestra Rwoh (Rebecca Henderson) appears in the show as a wizened Jedi Master advising the younger characters and brandishing her light whip in battle.

What is The Acolyte? All About the New Star Wars Show:

The Acolyte is a brand new live action Star Wars series set about 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. It’s an era of great peace and prosperity known as “The High Republic.” Jedi don gold robes, the Republic has expanded into the Outer Rim, and there’s no reason to believe that evil still lurks in the galaxy.

However, in The Acolyte, we learn that some Dark Side-users have been working right under the Jedi’s noses. One such student of the Force — an “acolyte,” if you will — embarks on a mission to murder Jedi Knights. Why she is doing this is a mystery you’ll have to watch the show to solve.

The Acolyte was created by writer/director Leslye Headland, a lifelong Star Wars geek who is best known for her work co-creating the Netflix series Russian Doll.
