For decades, audiences have been fascinated by the topic of the Roman Empire — and not just because it’s been trending on TikTok. From gladiator battles to cutthroat power struggles, from bacchanalian orgies to pulse-pounding chariot races, there’s plenty of reasons for people to still be obsessed about this era thousands of years after it ended. The upcoming Peacock series Those About to Die, based on the nonfiction book of the same name, takes place during the height of the Roman Empire, and explores the darkness and violence that have fascinated filmmakers since the dawn of cinema.

What is Those About to Die About?

Written and developed by Oscar nominated screenwriter Robert Rodat and directed by Roland Emmerich, Those About to Die focuses on the world of gladiator tournaments and events in Ancient Rome. Specifically, it focuses on the corruption that existed in said world. These competitions affect people from all walks of life, both in entertaining ways and in dangerous ways. The events are meant for entertainment, so the gladiators have to give the people what they want. However, that can lead to dirty tricks and violence that can not be taken back. Gladiators provide a spectacle, and they will do anything for a good show.
