It’s possible that House of the Dragon Season 2 might not have been top of your watch list for the last few weeks. After all, since the HBO show’s second season premiere, there’s been Netflix’s Bridgerton Season 3, The Bear Season 3 on Hulu, the sizzling hot finale of Interview With the Vampire Season 2, and a bevy of true crime docs, splashy reality shows — and even the siren song of warm summer weather — for House of the Dragon to compete with. So if you’ve been dragging your heels getting back to the grisly business of civil war in Westeros, it’s understandable!

That said, now is the time to catch up on House of the Dragon Season 2. This Sunday’s all-new episode, House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 is poised to be a massive turning point for the series in more ways than one. Besides marking the halfway mark of “Hot D Season 2,” this week’s installment is rip-roaring, jaw-dropping, and ultimately destined to be dissected all over social media Sunday night and at water coolers on Monday morning. You’re going to want to watch House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 live, or else risk being burnt by spoilers or stricken with a terrible case of FOMO.

Okay, we’re not going to get into spoilers, but we can set the scene for why House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 could potentially be such a big deal.

House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel inspired by the civil war that George R.R. Martin calls “The Dance of the Dragons.” House of the Dragon Season 1 spanned multiple decades, showing how the childhood friendship of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) devolved into a bitter blood feud between two halves of the Targaryen family. Team Black believed that Rhaenyra should be recognized as her father Viserys I’s (Paddy Considine) chosen heir. Team Green, on the other hand, wanted to put Rhaenyra’s half-brother, Viserys’s eldest surviving son, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) on the Iron Throne.

HOTD 203 DRAGON CHASE

The events depicted in House of the Dragon are inspired by a real medieval conflict known as “The Anarchy.” Henry I of England died, leaving his shrewd and powerful daughter Matilda as his apparent heir. However, Matilda’s uncle, Stephen of Blois, also made a move for the throne. What followed was a prolonged, bitter dispute that divided England and sparked bloodshed. House of the Dragon asks what if this happened, but with dragons?

Dragons have been shown to be the Westerosi version of a weapon of mass destruction and so far Rhaenyra has dismissed any call to send her dragons to war. She is that afraid of the damage a dragon-on-dragon war might cause. However, after meeting with Alicent in last week’s episode for one last ditch attempt at a diplomatic solution, Rhaenyra was not only given confirmation that war is inevitable, but that also Alicent put her son on the Iron Throne in error.
