During these uncertain times it’s nice to have some consistency. People will always be outraged on Twitter. Commercials will always be the best part of the Super Bowl. And American Horror Story fans will always be confused by the latest season.

It’s been over a year since the release of American Horror Story: 1984, and we still know shockingly little about this upcoming season. What’s its theme? Who’s in the cast? And most importantly of all, when is it coming out? We may not have all the answers about American Horror Story Season 10, but we do have some good clues — and some solid guesses.

Is American Horror Story Season 10 Happening?

Not only is it happening, but FX is tripling down on its hit horror drama. We knew in 2018 that AHS was going to have a tenth season, because back in January, 2020, FX renewed the series through Season 13. The fact that we didn’t see a new season last year isn’t a sign that the show is coming to an end. It was just delayed by COVID-19, a common theme throughout this current TV season.

What’s the Theme of American Horror Story Season 10?

Update: We now have the name of this new season. American Horror Story Season 10 will be known as Double Feature.

That subtitle is supposed to be taken literally, by the way. This season will feature not one but two horrifying stories: one that takes place by the sea and another that takes place on the land. But what exactly those stories will consist of remains a mystery.

The first concrete clue we were given was a post from Mr. Murphy himself. In May of last year he posted a photo of what’s believed to be Provincetown, Mass., and captioned it “American Horror Story. Clue.”

That’s not the only visual clue we have. In August, 2020, Murphy posted this photo of fake vampire teeth with a note that American Horror Story would be resuming production in October:

Murphy then doubled down on this theme with the official promotional poster that was released in November of last year. In the same post he also confirmed the Provincetown setting:

Then there’s the Provincetown Board of Selectmen to consider. Recently a project titled “Pilgrim” asked the board for permission to film. They were granted it, but that clue needs to be taken with a grain of salt. It’s not uncommon for shows or movies to use codenames during filming.

That brings us to Murphy himself. During an interview with The Wrap, Murphy revealed that his original idea for Season 10 was dependent on the weather. “Well I don’t know, a lot of what I was going to shoot was dependent on a very specific moment, it was a weather-dependent show,” Murphy said. “So now I don’t know. I don’t know what we’re going to do. I don’t know what I’m gonna do next with that show. I don’t know if I’ll accelerate another season or wait till next year to shoot this one.”

What does this all mean? We could take the that on-location name at its word and guess that this season has to do with pilgrims. We’ve seen American Horror Story go back in time before with Freak Show, and it even played with early American settlers in Roanoke. There’s also the actual name, Double Feature, to consider. Is that a nod to Rocky Horror Picture Show‘s opening song, “Science Fiction/Double Feature”? It wouldn’t be the first time Murphy has paid homage to the cult musical. And from what we know of this new season it seems to have that sort of over-the-top vibe. Is this season reminiscent of old Hollywood movies, yearning for a time when movie drive-ins were common? Who knows?

But part of us is hoping that at least half of this new season will include something that has both sharp teeth and loves the sea: mermaids. Or sirens, if you prefer. The idea of a group of dangerous beauties waiting to lure in unsuspecting victims sounds like a ton of fun.

Who’s in American Horror Story Season 10’s Cast?

Enough returning cast members to make you excited and a new one to pique your interest. For the returning crew, Kathy Bates, Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, Lily Rabe, Angelica Ross, and Finn Wittrock are all set to appear in Season 10. You read that correctly. Your faves Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters are coming back to scream and brood, respectively. This upcoming season will also star new cast members Spencer Novich, model Kaia Gerber, and Macaulay Culkin. But Culkin is the one you’ll want to watch.

According to Murphy, it was the revelation that Culkin’s character will have “crazy, erotic” sex with Kathy Bates that led to the actor saying yes. “I told him he has crazy, erotic sex with Kathy Bates and does other things. And he paused and he goes, ‘This sounds like the role I was born to play.’ So, he signed up right then and there,” Murphy told E! Online. Looks like two of the three Culkin brothers have a thing for older women.

When Will American Horror Story Season 10 Premiere?

Update: We finally have a premiere date. American Horror Story: Double Feature will premiere on FX Wednesday, August 25 at 10/9c p.m. Unlike other FX shows, it will only be premiering one episode its first night instead of two. Also it will be available on FX on Hulu the following day, Thursday, August 26.

That’s not all we know. We also know when Season 10 will end. In May FX head John Landgraf revealed that Double Feature‘s final episode will premiere on Halloween. Hopefully those dates will remain in place. In late July production for the series had to be shut down due to COVID-19.
