This was a solid fantasy story in a feudal society. I enjoyed the attention to detail the story displayed in relation to how such a society would work, particularly when the description of how the nobles and their private armies were recruited and used. (The king didn't command all of the men under arms in one great big army; each noble has a private army that doesn't necessarily serve the interest of the kingdom at large.)

The lead character (Owain) was good, as was the supporting cast. Owain, as King's Champion Emeritus, is still able to fight, but is also an experienced leader of soldiers. He discovers a previously defeated enemy of the kingdom getting ready to start trouble, but he doesn't know when or what they are planning. The story follows him as he convinces some of the nobles of the situation and enlists their help.

The language was "period" and suited to the story. There were no modern anachronisms to break immersion. Editing was good, no typos that I noticed.

The story is well-paced, with action punctuating an immersive narrative through a world where honor, magic, and bravery rule the day. The main character, Owain, is an old warrior who is called back to service by his sense of duty to the kingdom. He confronts an ancient evil that he thought he had defeated decades earlier, and works to restore the protectors of his land.

Grant brings his outstanding writing to this new genre, and he has captured the spirit of classic fantasy. He doesn’t dwell on descriptions, but does an excellent job of drawing out the lands and people that populate this new world.

King’s Champion is an easy, enjoyable read that grabs you and won’t let go. If you can put it down, it will keep you thinking until you pick it back up. It’s definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys excellent stories about honor and bravery.

This is an enjoyable fantasy, and a creditable first effort in the genre.

Grant's dialogue style, here, is somewhat archaic, stilted and formal, which works in context. I did feel, however, that the speaking style of all of the characters was fairly indistinguishable, and I hope that the author rises to the challenge of differentiating his creations' voices as he continues in the genre.

The plot is straightforward, but the interest in the characters, and their fates, is more than sufficient to keep one reading. It's a bloody tale, and the author, while he doesn't revel in gore, pulls no punches.

As always, Grant's writing style has a slightly "vintage" feel to it - a nod to the greats of the '30s through the '60s. It's subtle, but the pacing and the formality have a comfortably familiar feel that differs from most modern authors.

Good versus evil, it's a very old story. Evil never seems to give up. Is evil basically some one or some thing that wants to have "stuff" without working for it? Odd concept. If you want respect without warning it, you become a bully, if you want $$, you get into government (for the big bucks) or thief for smaller amounts. Folks look for love in all the wrong places. Is it a human condition to look for the easiest way to get what you want?

I've been a fan of Peter Grant's other series (SF and Western) as they have strong characters and excellent world building to go with interesting plots. This new fantasy book is no different, although in some respects the plot was a bit predictable and the "bad guys" were less competent than they might have been (that's why this gets a mere 4*s).

It is however a solid and enjoyable read and I'd like to see more in the same universe even though the book wraps things up quite nicely so there are no cliffhangers waiting for the sequel.

The story is fast-paced, in a world where honor, magic, and bravery rule, the main character is an old warrior who is called back to service by his sense of duty. A visit to an old friend's grave starts the action and it takes off from there!

Peter has captured the spirit of classic fantasy. His world an excellent one with descriptions of people that populate this new world, yet allow the reader to use their imagination. It’s definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys excellent stories about honor and bravery, written in a straightforward manner that keeps the reader interested until the last page.

For his first fantasy novel, this was very good. It wasn't terribly long, and it wasn't terribly complex in plot. But his main character is nicely complex, his world is interesting, and the story is straightforward.

I would like to see him develop more characters further in the story. That was the only thing lacking, but it is a nit and not worth deducting a star.

There is one quote from the book that has stuck in my mind: The Gods give us one life and demand of us one death. Let us use them well.

There's some similarities between King's Champion and Legend by David Gemmell. An elderly axe-wielding widower, who's best friend was a womanizer, is dragged by circumstances out of retirement. Fear not, King's Champion diverges quickly from that common premise. This book stands on its own and does so well, although the ending is a bit too 'shiny' for my taste.

Yet another one-sitting book from Peter Grant. The highest praise I can offer is that this reminded me of the enjoyment of reading the late David Gemmels 'Legend' for the first time. This is that good. I can only hope for more books set in the same universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive First Fantasy
Reviewed in Australia on September 23, 2017
Most modern fantasies are doorstoppers with multiple volumes. Peter Grant breaks this tradition with a tight packed storyline who's resolution occurs in one novel. Another enjoyable change for me anyway is that the lead character is mature, none of the farmboy who turns out to be a secret king or special snowflake. Owain is experienced and seasoned, with aches and pains he has to use intelligence to outwit and survive his encounters. Another point in this novel's favour is the moral nihilism found in many modern works is missing. It lacks the graphic violence and grit found in David Gemmell's work but stands well in comparison. I hope Mr Grant continues writing fantasies, I'll be reading if so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peter Grant could write about Lawn Mowing and make it fascinating!

Unashamedly I am a fanboy of Peter Grant's writing - he changes from genre to genre and succeeds every time so far- his Westerns were reminiscent of Louis Lamour - his space opera is great and now science fantasy reminds me of David Gemmell - wow high praise indeed! The only negative is that the story finished WAY too quickly - please please Peter write some prequels!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent heroic fantasy!
Reviewed in Australia on August 27, 2017
There's little more to say than that this is excellent heroic fantasy, with the kind of tight focus on personal courage you might find in something by Gemmel, or in the best of the Pulps.
