UPDATE 3 PM: The filming and broadcast will be directed by David Horn, executive producer of public television’s Great Performances.
EARLIER: The Roundabout Theatre Company’s lauded Broadway revival of the musical She Loves Me will be telecast live June 30, bringing Broadway a step closer in line with popular pay-per-view ventures as NTLive, produced by the UK’s National Theatre, and Live From the Met, produced by the Metropolitan Opera. The cost to stream the show, presented by BroadwayHD in association with Ellen M. Krass, will be $9.99 — or $8,990.01 less than a day-of pair of tickets to Hamilton at the going rate.

The revival of the 1964 Sheldon Harnick /Jerry Bock/Joe Masteroff musical stars Laura Benanti, Zachary Levi, Jane Krakowski and Gavin Creel.
Although Broadway producers and unions have been slow to get on the PPV bandwagon, the success of other presentations, including NTLive’s telecast of the Broadway revival of Of Mice And Men (shown after the show had closed) and the ratings bonanzas delivered by NBC and Fox’s live telecasts of made-for-TV versions of The Wiz, Grease, The Sound Of Music and Peter Pan have shown there’s a large family audience for such presentations that extends well beyond Broadway. One obvious factor in making She Loves Me a prime prospect is that it’s a limited run, slated to conclude July 10 at Studio 54. The telecast will have no negative impact on the box office and may well even spur ticket sales in the run’s final weeks.
“It is not only a great honor to be the first live telecast of a Broadway show, but since She Loves Me is a 20-week limited engagement, millions of people around the world will still have the opportunity to see this glorious production,” Roundabout artistic director Todd Haimes told Deadline. “We were approached eight weeks ago by Ellen Krass who said she loved the production and had to film it. I said ‘Sure,’ [knowing] it’s very expensive, with I think nine or 10 cameras, and they film three nights, the third one being streamed live. Ten days ago she, in partnership with Stewart Lane’s company, said they had raised all the money. The fact that 20 years from now people can view this magnificent piece of work in HD quality is so profoundly important to me.”
Most recently BroadwayHD live streamed the “Behind the Scenes” show for the 70th annual Tony Awards. Past live streams also included Off-Broadway’s productions of the New Group’s Buried Child and Signature Theatre’s Old Hats.
“We are honored to expand the reach of live theater beyond Broadway to audiences everywhere,” said Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley, co-founders of BroadwayHD. “This has always been a dream of ours and we are happy to achieve it in less than a year since our launch. Thank you to Roundabout Theatre Company for entrusting us to bring this historic live theater event to BroadwayHD.”
