Netflix has made a 20-episode straight-to-series order for Disjointed, acquiring the pot-themed workplace comedy starring Kathy Bates from Warner Bros TV. CBS mainstay Chuck Lorre and former Daily Show head writer David Javerbaum are writing and executive producing the multi-camera series in which the American Horror Story veteran plays a lifelong advocate for legalization who’s finally living her dream as the owner of an L.A.-area cannabis dispensary.
The comedy spec script was the winter’s most anticipated project back in January, when it was first shopped to the broadcast networks and Netflix. As someone put it at the time, it’s The Big Bang Theory, if the guys were not geniuses but selling weed. Lorre and Javerbaum subsequently rewrote the script. In the series, Oscar and Emmy winner Bates’ character is joined by three budtenders, her twentysomething son and a deeply troubled security guard. And everyone is more or less constantly high. No others castings were announced.
Chuck Lorre Productions is the juggernaut behind hit CBS comedies The Big Bang Theory, Mom, Mike & Molly and Two And A Half Men — all are also from WBTV, where Lorre is under an overall deal. Along with his long stint writing for The Daily Show With Jon Stewart during the 2000s — earning 11 Emmys along the way — Javerbaum won a pair of Emmys for writing songs for the Tony Awards (for James Corden and Neil Patrick Harris) and also has worked on Emmy and Oscar shows.
Bates scored an Emmy for her 2012 guest stint on Two And A Half Men and another for a supporting role on American Horror Story: Coven. She is tipped to be returning for the untitled sixth installment of FX’s anthology series. Repped by ICM Partners, the Misery Oscar winner’s recent credits include feature The Boss and a couple of Mike & Molly episodes. She also scooped Oscar noms for her supporting roles in Primary Colors and About Schmidt.
