USA: Bodycam Footage Reveals Dramatic Gwinnett County Bus Hijacking
United States - June 11, 2024 Atlanta police have made public harrowing footage capturing their efforts to apprehend a suspect involved in a fatal transit bus hijacking in Gwinnett County. The released videos include dashcam footage depicting police maneuvering through traffic to pursue the hijacked bus, as well as bodycam footage showing officers attempting to intervene with stop sticks. The incident unfolded when 39-year-old Joseph Grier, reportedly involved in a prior shooting at a downtown Atlanta food court, boarded a Gwinnett County transit bus. Following an altercation, Grier allegedly shot and killed 58-year-old Ernest Byrd Jr., then commandeered the bus at gunpoint, directing the driver, Ernst, to drive to Stone Mountain. According to Grier's family, he had been grappling with unemployment and had ceased taking prescribed medication for mental health issues.
