My Brush with Fame

Posted April 13, 2024 By John C Wright

A reader calls to my attention that I was mentioned by name during an episode of
Called to Communion with Dr. David Anders April 8th, 2024

The question of private revelations or visions is asked at 5:15 and my name is mentioned at 8:06.

For some odd reason, he calls it a near-death experience, which it most certainly was not. I did see the Christ, the Father, the Holy Spirit, and saw and spoke with the Virgin. A month later, I saw separate visions about eternity and other realms, I did not visit heaven nor claim to have.

To be sure, I would not expect a casual readers of my account to remember these distinction. They were only meant for me. I was ordered to speak but little about exactly what I saw, and so misunderstandings are inevitable.

But neither vision was not a “near-death” nor an “out-of-body” experience in the way that term is normally used. It was just an ordinary, run-of-the-mill, inexplicable supernatural experience.

Reviewer Praise for Rachel Griffin.

Posted April 11, 2024 By John C Wright

This is a reader review for the UNEXPECTED ENLIGHTENMENT books penned by my beautiful and talented wife. I was proud enough to bust my buttons, so I wanted to pass the kind words along to my readers:

Review for THE UNEXPECTED ENLIGHTENMENT OF RACHEL GRIFFIN

Just Read It

I hate young adult books. Oh, don’t get me wrong – I don’t have anything against them, but I’m old – I am sure I would have liked them when I was younger, but reading young adult books is tedious and annoying for me now.

Except this series. I’ve heard good things about it for years, but avoided it – after all, I hate young adult books. On a whim after reading a particularly good review, I just decided to give it a try – and I am really, really glad I did.

I absolutely love the world – and yes, while there are plenty of hat tips to Harry Potter and its influence is undeniable, not only would I say this series stands on its own with a unique world, but I would strongly say I prefer it. Really, I love everything about this series – the characters are unique enough to be memorable, and deep enough for me to really love them – even though I am old, I am getting suckered into a enjoying the 13 year old’s perspective on the world. It is particularly enjoyable to see her deal with conflicts with adults, and remembering having some of them myself. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and would strongly recommend it – even if you are old and hate young adult books like me, these are something special. I am looking forward to watching Rachel Griffin grow up – can’t wait to see where the series goes. And can’t wait to share it with my kids.

When Your Publisher Compares You to a Legend

Posted November 9, 2023 By John C Wright

When your publisher compares you to a legend, you blush. You brag about it, if you are an egomaniacal author, but you still blush.

Arkhaven, for those who do not know it, is producing the graphic novel version of one of my works. Their reviews the new teaser for the upcoming Hiyao Miyazaki film.

Here is the quote.

Truthfully as soon as he announced he was hanging up his paint brushes his fans started the timer. They couldn’t believe he could walk away for good.

However it was looking like he was serious…But then he got approached by his own museum to make a short film for it … This short got the creative juices flowing again and he started storyboarding a new movie. … It’s a wholly original work and looks to be Miyazaki’s best since Spirited Away, which I didn’t think was possible.

It feels a little bit like Wright’s Swan Knight.

Anyway, it releases in December and I’m totally in.

My comment: I am also totally in. I have adore Miyazaki’s work ever since I saw Warriors of the Wind (the heavily edited Americanized version of Nausicaa) on HBO back in the 1980s.

Here is the teaser for The Boy and the Heron

About Thirteen Years Ago

Posted September 19, 2023 By John C Wright

This is a review by my editor of the four stories gathered into one of my anthologies, AWAKE IN THE NIGHT LAND.

Most reviews are merely reviews, but this one is not. Mr. Robertson (may he rest in peace) had a good working relationship with me that verged (so I hope) into friendship. This column is also his farewell message. It is the last thing I heard from him before he departed this life.

His words below mean much to me, and I hope they will mean something more to you, dear reader, than the typical opinion of whether a book is fair or foul.

Lepanto Interview

Posted July 20, 2023 By John C Wright

The Lepanto Institute did me the honor of asking to interview me regarding my conversion experience for their Anchor Team podcast an episode titled “Twitch Upon the Thread.”

“I caught him, with an unseen hook and an invisible line which is long enough to let him wander to the ends of the world, and still to bring him back with a twitch upon the thread.” –G.K. Chesterton

Interview with Crimelaw Part 1

Posted May 8, 2023 By John C Wright

Mr. Stephen N. Gosney had my books recommended to him, and was so well pleased with them, that he declared himself a loyal fan, and asked me to be a guest on his podcast. We rambled on together for quite a while, so the piece will be released in parts. Here is part 1.

Reviewer Praise for IRON CHAMBER OF MEMORY

Posted December 17, 2022 By John C Wright

Caroline Furlong of the Song of Joy website has a favorable report for IRON CHAMBER OF MEMORY, my sole attempt at writing a metaphysical thriller after the fashion of Charles Williams of Inklings fame.

If you recognize her name, dear reader, this is not coincidence. She was published in the same Planetary Anthology series as published a short story of mine.

She writes, in part:

Iron Chamber of Memory is a great story. The horror increases the further along one goes, as does the growing sense that something is wrong. Although the how and why is not clear until much later, it does not take one long to realize that nothing in and about the Isle of Sark is what it seems. What is visible to the heroes and to the readers hides an invisible truth far more terrifying than that which is seen, and to save all the worlds will mean the heroes must risk everything.

But what are worlds worth when compared to the value of a single soul?

Having read the book, I can see how it was inspired by a dream, as it has a certain visionary quality to it. This does not make it too difficult to follow, though the deeper one goes, the harder it is to keep complete track of what is second sight, what is literal, and what is visible only to the inner eye. While I would not necessarily recommend the book for youngsters, this is a novel certain to appeal to horror enthusiasts and those with old-fashioned tastes. Arthurian aficionados and fans of old fairy tales will find it engaging as well, as it takes the Arthurian Legends far more seriously than a multitude of modern writers in that it does not sacrifice what made the Legends “magical” in the first place.

Reviewer Praise for SHOOT THE DEVIL

Posted October 25, 2022 By John C Wright

A reviewer is very generous with his applause for an Anthology where I am honored to appear next to friends and fellows, called SHOOT THE DEVIL in which my short story ‘Fell Beasts’ appears.

Critical Blast posts the following review:

Crucifixion Press Resurrects Pulse-Pounding Pulp Action In The New Anthology, ‘Shoot The Devil’

In the August, 1928 issue of seminal pulp fiction publication Weird Tales (the same magazine responsible for first popularizing the material of cosmic horror pioneer H.P. Lovecraft), a story by legendary Conan creator Robert E. Howard appeared featuring a somber and gloomy 17th century Puritan wanderer whose sole motivation was the destruction of evil in all its unearthly forms. Solomon Kane’s inaugurate adventure, ‘Red Shadows’, set the tone for much of the character’s later excursions–deeply religious, Kane sported all-black attire and boldly confronted his infernal enemies with rapier, dirk and a brace of flintlock pistols. Readers of the era lapped it up, and multiple stories in the series were released before Howard’s tragic and untimely death.

Nearly a century later, Solomon Kane’s two-fisted spirit lives in an army of movies and television shows. From Hammer Films’ katana-wielding Captain Kronos, to Blade, Buffy and Dylan Dog, The Witcher, the Winchester brothers and Ash Vs The Evil Dead, to Exorcist Vengeance, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and everything in between, the never-ending war on the forces of darkness continues unabated. Yet in its medium of origin that same combative essence has waned through the decades. Now Crucifixion Press has resurrected blood-pumping pulp intensity in prose with their new multi-author anthology, Shoot The Devil. Subtitled as ‘Ten Double-Barreled Tales of Humanity Defeating the Demonic’, editor Eric Postma has successfully assembled a roster of top-tier indie talent who revel in giving the horned one his long due defeat.

It is 2.10 in the morning as I write these words of triumph. I have just finished the final draft of volume six of the planned twelve volume series of STARQUEST.

03 STARQUEST: CATBURGLAR in the CONSTELLATIONS

04 STARQUEST: OUTLAW of the OUTER STARS

05 STARQUEST: SCOURGE of the SPACEWAYS

06 STARQUEST: SPACEMAN in the IRON MASK

I am pausing to crow to any reader kind enough to read these words before I pen with first sentence of the next volume:

07 STARQUEST: PIRATE KING of STAR PATROL

Reviewer Praise for Somewhither

Posted August 9, 2022 By John C Wright

A very generous review from Upstream Reviews:

“… one of the most interesting and original works that I’ve read in the last ten or more years. John C. Wright weaves the Templar, mythical creatures, the multiverse and an alien invasion into a fast-passed action adventure that never seems to slow down despite its length.”

Read the whole thing.

National Catholic Register Interview

Posted July 11, 2020 By John C Wright

I was hoping they were looking to hire me when the National Catholic Register asked for “an interview”, but, no, sadly, the paper only wanted to ask me some questions about my writing.

But the gateways of fame are now open. I expect to be a household name in my own house before the month is passed.

Changes Afoot!

Posted January 23, 2020 By John C Wright

Jagi, here.

Some of you may have heard, but Superversive Press–the publishing company that was publishing John’s more recent books and some of his older ones–has shut down. This means that any links you have for John’s new books are  no longer any good.

The non-fiction and possibly, in the future, some fiction collections, are now posted on Amazon directly by us.

Reviewer Praise for BARSOOM TO MALACANDRA

Posted December 16, 2019 By John C Wright

My nonfiction essay collection, From Barsoom to Malacandra, has garnered its first reader review, which is a five star. (This is not a review written by my mother, because she does not read my books.)

John C. Wright is a master of science fiction. No one can tell a fantasy or space opera as well. This series of musings on what makes good or great work is insightful, unique and interesting. His essay on the new star wars is worth the price of the book all by itself. All fans of the genre should read this book.

I am humbled by this high praise, and hope all my readers will take it to heart.

A word of warning: all this material, in one form or another, was previously published here on my blog, and hence is no longer available.  Longtime readers may have read the essays before.  On the other hand, if you want a permanent copy in case of an anti-Conservative purge on WordPress, act now.
