If Full House icons Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen decide to eventually reprise their (shared) role on Netflix‘s Fuller House, it won’t be at series creator Jeff Franklin‘s request.
The first two seasons of the Netflix spinoff were peppered with mentions of Michelle’s absence, including several fourth wall-breaking shoutouts to the twins who took turns playing the youngest of Danny Tanner’s daughters. But you won’t find any such shoutouts in Season 3, the first half of which dropped Friday.
“Personally, I’ve given up asking them,” Franklin admits to TVLine. “The door is open, but I’m not going to be calling them anymore to invite them. They just don’t seem interested in coming. It’s been three years of invitations, so they know the door is open. It’s up to them to decide if they want to come play or not.”
Though the actresses considered appearing in the show’s first season, at least according to Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, they ultimately decided not to participate, making them the only series regulars from the original series who have not revisited their (fictional) childhood home.
How do you feel about Fuller‘s lack of Michelle? Should the Olsens take one for the team and show up in the hypothetical fourth season, or are you cool with their decision to keep their distance? Drop your thoughts in a comment below.
I mean… it’s not like they’re doing much these days…
Except, you know, running a business empire…
Acting wise that is true, but business wise, your statement is far from true. It’s understandable that you didn’t know that though lol.
if you mean “nothing” running a business fashion empire of billions of money..
Lmao they are literally running a billion dollar fashion empire right now. They pull in *way* more money than any of their Full House co-stars. They’re plenty busy.
If it weren’t for Full House they wouldn’t be where they are now. Show a little gratitude.
So they should take time out of their own business which is doing pretty damn well for a TV show? Can’t you just accept that they have other things they’d rather do. Yes it got them their big break but they don’t owe the producers anything at this stage.
How long do you think it’d take to shoot a couple scenes? Multi-cam production is very fast. They could knock out a cute cameo in no time.
lol @ you thinking it would be impossible to do.
They were six months old when they were cast on the show. They’re adults now, they make their own decisions, and are under no obligation to guest star. They shouldn’t be shamed for their decision not to participate.
I wonder if the twins resent it that they would be no-names with no business empire nor fortune if they had not been in the show. I never watched the show and don’t really care if they come back or not. But, it would be a nice gesture on their part.
Yes.
I said the same thing… they are just too full of themselves these days. I never felt their acting skill were up to par with the rest of the cast anyway. Not really missing them.
Probably because they were cast as infants instead of the rest of the cast that actually had auditions. It’s probably why they don’t act anymore – because they didn’t choose that career for themselves, like the rest of the cast.
They are not acting anymore. They’ve said multiple times. Come on, now. I loved Michelle, and i would love to see Mary-Kate and Ashley back, but this is totally their choice, and we have to respect that!
My point exactly
Very true, they are under no obligation to appear but there is a good chance they wouldn’t have this empire if it wasn’t for full house. Would be nice of them if they made just 1 special guest appearance.
I agree yes they do have a business to run but thanks to that show they had lots of opportunities and they should never forget where their chances were created.
I mean yes, if they’ve said no for three years I would stop asking.
If they don’t want to revisit something that their parents signed them up for and they probably only have a few clear memories of, that’s their business. They’re both completely out of acting, running a fashion business, so it makes sense to me that they wouldn’t want to do this. They do a lot to stay OUT of the light and they should be allowed to.
I agree.
This. It’s not like they were great actresses, anyway. Just find an actress who kind of resembles them to pop in, then leave. I mean, how many faux-Bradys were there over the years? Throughout the multiple revivals, each of the girls had a replacement actress at least once.
I was really getting annoyed with the fourth wall shout-outs to ask the Olsen twins to come do “Fuller House” anyway!
Yeah. Season 3 already and the media keep asking about only the twins. Let it go. They are not coming back and we have to respect that. I’m a fan of the original and i love Fuller House too, but it’s time to let it go of Michelle.
It’s no like they’re doing two movies and a TV show somewhere. They seem to have retired entirely from acting. I wouldn’t take it personally.
I know they want the original actress(es) to come back as Michelle, but if they simply want the Michelle character to make an appearance I think they should reach out to the other Olsen. Elizabeth Olsen is a great actress herself, looks enough like her sisters that she could pass as Michelle and is only a few years younger than the Twins, so it wouldn’t be too much of an age gap. Elizabeth Olsen might turn down the role as well, but in my opinion it couldn’t hurt to ask.
Just came here to say the same thing. I think she would be perfect, except for the fact that she has no reason to say yes…
she is way too big of a movie star now… maybe a few years ago.. but since her involvement with the Avengers and Marvel.. she has blown up way past a Netflix throwback to her siblings
They already ask Elizabeth if she wanted to come and she turned them down so I say just find somebody else to take up the role for an episode or two
That was just a rumor, Elizabeth claimed that nobody asked her about doing Fuller House. Glad they didn’t do that, that would be insensitive of them to do. John and Jeff are definitely not insensitive.
The Olsen twins even endorsed this idea. Maybe it’s time they executive of Fuller House did too
Elizabeth Olsen is WAY too big a movie star now to pinch-hit for her reluctant sisters. The part belongs to her sisters, so she has no incentive to step on their toes.
I forgot all about them. I no longer care and have moved on. I am not angry with them. I just accepted it and am enjoying the show.
Yes, me too.
same.
The ly should come back and stop playing games. It doesn’t have to be all the time. Just a couple of episodes to say what Michelle has been up to.
But they aren’t playing games – they explicitly turned the offer down multiple times because they retired from acting. Why should they have to say yes when they aren’t even in that field anymore? They were babies when the show first aired.
I’m guessing part of the reason is they don’t share the same connection the other cast does. What were they 8 or 9 when the show ended? I don’t remember people from my life at that age, nor do I have interest in hanging out with them 20 years later. Also it’s not like they need the paycheck.
True. And Bob Saget (if i’m correctly), said something like this in a interview a while ago. They don’t have the same memories as the others..they were literally babies. And it’s their choice. They are not in the acting business anymore. They are running a fashion empire now. I loved Michelle and it would be awesome to have them back, but i understand their choice.
I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if the role were recast. It’s more than a bit odd that an immediate family member who is not estranged from the rest should never, not ever appear. Even family members who live clear across the globe come home for the holidays. The Olsens have every right to move on but so does the show and if a good story comes along that requires Michelle to be brought back then any form of loyalty to the original portrayers would for me at least, seem completely unnecessary.
Totally agree
They’re the type of co stars who change over the years. They’re now “above” the show. I don’t watch the Netflix spin off. But I agree with the creator. When people let you know they don’t want anything to do with the show, then you have to accept it and move on.
They are just not actors anymore… people can change professions over time,,,
Their appearing isn’t strictly necessary. I don’t know why they can’t just continue to reference her and every once in a while have a character or two (most likely Stephanie alone or DJ and the boys together) disappear for an episode and say they’re visiting Michelle. There are ways to keep her in the world without her actually being there, and the show doesn’t really need her. They could even bring one of her childhood friends into it through DJ’s or Kimmy’s work and reference her that way.
I don’t see any harm in recasting if the producers want her to appear. She’s the easiest of the Tanner girls to recast anyway because she was still so young when the original show ended. If they don’t want to, they don’t want to, and they can’t really be blamed for that, they’re no longer acting, they’re very busy, and they were so young that they likely don’t have the memories that the others do of the original show.
Let me say that to me, MK & A have every right to move on from acting and keep a low profile behind the scenes. Not every child actor, especially ones like them who didn’t have any say as babies/ toddlers, is interested in doing that long term. As adults, they should absolutely be entitled to do whatever they want to do, and I think that they deserve a lot of praise for surviving child stardom to become very successful as fashion designers and business women.
However, given all of that, they both sadly come across like ungrateful snobs to me. They surely know that this is the 30th anniversary of the iconic show that launched them into superstardom. I know that they may not have the clearest memories, but Full House and its fans literally put them on the path to fame and fortune. You mean to tell me that they couldn’t at least release a statement showing some gratitude to the fans for supporting them for so many years, acknowledging the milestone/sequel, and what the show ultimately led them to? They undoubtedly would not have had any of these opportunities in the fashion/beauty industry without their time as little girls on that show and the dozens of videos/movies they were offered and appeared in afterward.
That’s very disappointing to me. There are plenty of regular 25-30 year old women in this economic climate who are forced to wait tables and take other menial jobs to make ends meet, which of course they never had to worry about. Maybe they truly don’t feel this way in private, but it comes across publicly like they don’t show proper respect to their roots.
Oh please. They don’t owe you anything. Fans of the show chose to watch the show because they liked it, not to advance the acting careers of the babies onscreen. They have long moved on from acting and clearly don’t want “superstardom” since they seem to consistently hide from cameras and attention, and they clearly don’t want any of the attention that’s been swirling around this revival. Fans that demand that famous people do certain things to appease them are the most disappointing, and all the whining that they are being ungrateful while the show has been literally revived to appease the fans’ nostalgia is the most ungrateful thing of all. The show didn’t need to return, so appreciate it.
Excuse me, you’re putting words in my mouth. I did not say that at least one of them needs to return to acting to do the show. I fully understand and respect that they’ve both moved on to other things and try as much as possible to stay out of the spotlight these days. I have zero problem with that at all. I’m very happy for their success. They’ve clearly learned from the pitfalls that have plagued other child stars, so kudos to them.
However, I just don’t think it would have been too much to ask for one or both of them to take, say, 45 minutes or an hour out of their free time away from their daily fashion/business work to put out a classy statement, or even just a couple of quotes, expressing some thankfulness to the fans for their longtime support and to the show for ultimately leading them to discover a passion for fashion at a young age. That would not have been looked at as them seeking attention. I mean, unless they both live under a rock, they had to know that this is the 30th anniversary of Full House’s debut. Again, I get that acting was not a choice they themselves made and that they probably don’t have the same memories as the older cast members. But they almost certainly would not be where they are today if they were never part of Full House and had such loyal fans who bought all of their tween merchandise/movies. IMO, to not even acknowledge that around this time in some tiny way through their publicist/manager/agent just does not make them look humble to me, which is a shame. That’s the entirety of what I said above, nothing more.
Hmm you said you consider them “ungrateful snobs” for not doing what you want them to do. So I’m not putting words in your mouth at all. Again, they don’t owe you anything, and they don’t have to do anything that you deem as an appropriate response. I’m sure they’re aware that it’s the 30th anniversary of Full House, but you have absolutely no idea if they paid their respects. They have private relationships with many of the people involved in the original show – for all you know, they sent everyone a basket of jewels and perfumes to celebrate. But at the end of the day, it’s none of our business. They were forced into “superstardom” as babies, and once they became adults, they decided they wanted absolutely nothing to do with the idea of celebrity. Your demeaning them because they don’t want to release statements through publicists (like a celebrity would) is honestly ridiculous.
They have every right to say no. Just let it go.
Thank you. These women have no obligation to feed people’s nostalgia fetish. It’s the producers keeping the drama going, not them. They should have simply recast when they were told no the first time.
Producers didn’t keep the drama going. It’s the media that keeps asking him about it.
Agree. It’s their choice and i respect.
Growing up, I was a huge MK&A fan. I was in the official fan club, I had the movie subscriptions, the books, dolls, posters, etc. I was their target demo and I lapped it up. I still hold quite a bit of affection for them (as you never really give up your childhood touchstones).
.
It saddens me that they won’t come back , for even a cameo, to the thing that gave them their empire.
To the people calling them snobs or ungrateful–they are not. I’m sure they are very humble which is why they’ve created such a successful empire and not gone down the embarrassing sitcom star route once they reached adulthood. They are still close with the cast, just not interested in being in the public.
If they are humble women, then they would at least occasionally acknowledge their roots from the show through a publicist in some small way, especially now around the 30th anniversary when every other main original cast member has appeared on the sequel and each has expressed some gratitude. Neither of them has done that. I totally understand that they most likely don’t have the level of memories/sentiments of the older cast members and didn’t have any say early on, but if it wasn’t for Full House, they would not have their “successful empire” today.
I’m not at all saying that either is obligated to appear on Fuller House, but I do think that they could both be just a bit more personable every now and then. IMO, it’s just not a good look. If I was in their exact shoes, I’d go out of my way to show occasional public appreciation to the projects/people/fans who helped make me the powerhouse that I am today as an adult.
Humble women don’t date or marry men old enough to be their grandfather. It’s called really bad issues.
MK’s husband is only 17 years older than her.
Only???????
Eh, my grandparents were 15 years apart. And my grandmother is one of the most humble women I’ve ever known.
Idc as Michelle was always the worst.
I guess I never realized how big their fashion empire is. I don’t see clothes or anything in stores ever.
I love the show without them anyway.
Their clothing labels are on the pricier end with showings every fashion week…so you wouldn’t find them most stores.
Why don’t they just recast? Slip in a joke about them looking different.
We haven’t seen what Michelle looks like in the show anyway.
I won’t buy anything with their name on it ever again. I understand not wanting to be main characters but to not even do small cameos? I mean there are 2 of them. The are disrespectful of their roots so I don’t respect them.
…. Is this a thing you do, buy things with their names on it? Closet full of Elizabeth and James? Seriously, get off your high horse. They don’t owe anyone anything. It wasn’t their choice to be on the show in the first place. They capitalized on an opportunity like every does in life. Just because their opportunity was a public-facing one doesn’t obligate them to anything, least of all your weird need to “respect” them.
Personally, the two of them are acting like spoiled brats. If it weren’t for this show, they wouldn’t be anywhere.
Really want to see olsens back i geew up with full house michelle was my favorite character and such a big part would love to see at least one pop up.
It’s very sad that they show no appreciation at all for what made them, and that they hardly ever smile in the rare photos seen of them today.
Do they ever smile?
It would be nice if they would show up. But it’s their loss.
Lmao not at all. They’re making heaps of money running their business and are still friends with the cast anyway. They’re doing just fine.
I love you guys so much and I’m dting to see the next series
