Gilmore Girls fans worried that Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino’s new multi-year Amazon Studios deal all but sticks a fork in a second Netflix revival need to simmer down and read the contract’s fine print.
According to multiple sources, the pact — which calls for Team Palladino to develop new series for Amazon beyond their upcoming dramedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel — includes an “out” clause that would allow the pair to spearhead a follow-up to last year’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life for Netflix. Of course, that’s hardly a guarantee that there will be a second revival. I’m told the clause was included in case the stars aligned creatively (i.e. Amy and Dan felt inspired to pen a “sequel” and any/all potential scheduling hurdles could be cleared).
Back in May, Lauren Graham weighed in on the subject of a second revival, telling TVLine, “Now it’s become what can we [still] do with this story that’s satisfying, that [makes it] worth continuing, that will be gratifying to the people who care so much about it. I don’t know if there’s a need to do more. I would never want it to feel like we overstayed our welcome.” Several weeks later, Graham hinted at the possibility of a one-off holiday movie during a TVLine Podcast Q&A.
One thing is clear: Netflix definitely wants to head back to Stars Hollow. Buoyed in large part by last November’s release of A Year in the Life, the streamer added a record-shattering 7.05 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2016. “We hope [it happens],” Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said last March when asked about the chances of a second revival. “We obviously loved the success of the show [and] fans loved how well it was done; it delivered what they hoped. The worst thing is to wait a couple of years for your favorite show to come back and for it to disappoint you, but [Amy and Dan] sure delivered and people were really excited about more. And we have been talking to them about the possibility of that.’
For now, the Palladinos have their hands full with Mrs. Maisel, which netted an unprecedented-for-Amazon two season pickup in the wake of the pilot’s rapturous reception. (It garnered an average customer rating of 4.9, with 93 percent awarding it five stars). Season 1 is set to launch later this year.
I’m not sure I’d watch another one….I was pretty disappointed with A Year in the Life….
I started watching Gilmore girls because of the revival, before that id never seen the show, and the revival was amazing, IMO
Agreed – I’ve been a fan since the pilot and loved AYITL. It didn’t deserve the degree of hate it got from part of the fandom.
Agreed! The only part I disliked (and even that is a strong word when it comes to Gilmore Girls) was the amount of time they used for the musical. Other than that the magic was still there. I loved it so much that I’m not even sure I’d want new episodes/a movie. The ending gave me a real ”full circle” moment. People wanting new episodes…just to find out who Rory’s baby daddy is…seriously, did you watch the revival?
Totally agree with everything you’ve said and why.
I know think tere are 3 possible baby daddies! Need to know who! Lol
RIGHT?! What is Mr. Chief content officer talking about?! Listen to your fans, dude! We hated the revival!
You really don’t speak for all of the viewers. You certainly don’t speak for me. Were there parts of the AYITL that were unnecessary, maybe even a little sloppy? Of course there were. But the nostalgia was strong enough to pull me (and many other viewers) through to a very positive experience. I loved the revival and would absolutely watch another. And I know I’m not alone.
NO.YOUR NOT
I actually liked it better the second time I watched it.
Same here.
I’ve watched the revival 3 times and I’m on my third run of the entire Gilmore Girls series! I cannot get enough of the witty dialogue and quirky characters. I wish Stars Hollow was a real place so I could move there!!
Agreed. The revival left a bad taste in my mouth and basically emphasized on the bad parts of the show (which were in Seasons 6&7) rather than the fun, goofy parts of the show we all fell in love with.
Loved it. It wasn’t perfect…. but I really didn’t care. It made me really happy and satisfied to be back in Stars Hollow, and I the words… the magnificent Lorelai/Rory patter… *dies*
I was also disappointed in the year in the life revival story lines. Yet I still love the characters and Stars Hollow so much I would watch another; just to hope they redeem something of the original intelligence Rory had. I hate the way her character became so off character.

I agree. AYITL kind of put a damper on GG for me. Very disappointed with the way character development went backwards. The best parts of the story were the ones that had to do with Richard’s death, which were probably not part of the original story concept by ASP.
They’d better not have another Stars Hollow Musical – that was a total waste of time that could’ve been used with the characters we tuned in for (sorry Sutton Foster)
I agree totally with this. The musical was awful and I kept thinking why don’t they have more of the original players instead of forcing “special” guests into the story. Also, they insulted loyal fans by ignoring character development in S7 to fit AS-P’s original thoughts. Since there was an S7 they should have worked with it not ignored most of it. I wouldn’t mind more GG but it would have to improve on these things.
As a huge Gilmore Girls fan, I don’t know if I’m up for more. I was disappointed with a Year in the Life. If it’s more of the same, it’s time to move on. Or do a movie & just wrap it all up.
Rory’s daughter turns up to be a transgirl. That would be awesome. But I doubt the creators would do anything like that, as their shows are almost white straight all the time.
Stop pushing your trans agenda!
Why? Het people push their agenda like an avalanche 24-7-365 by a quadrillion fold…
While I agree that GG is not the place for it (the Palladinos couldn’t do it respectfully anyway), let’s also not forget that the Palladinos used trans people as the butt of a joke more than once. They knew better than to do that about most other minority groups, just selective bashing.
As a lifelong Paris/Rory shipper, I am in agreement with you
Cool clause to have
As long as they promise not to do another musical, I’m in. Okay, who am I kidding… I’m in no matter what. But please, no musical.
I would be thrilled if they produced more episodes of Gilmore Girls! I love everything about it! It is a feel good show for me!
I was certainly left wanting more, so I’m glad there’s an option. If they weren’t seriously considering it, that clause wouldn’t have been placed there. I loved the revival and we all want to see the effect motherhood will have on Rory. And I still have great hope for her and Jess. Just as long as we get more Sookie, next time.
Let it go. The original series (especially those high school years) was great. The revival was okay, but largely unnecessary (though I credit it with relaunching Alexis Bledel’s career). Lauren Graham deserves a funny, thoughtful role on a well-written TV show, just not the same role she’s played for eight years.
Graham was amazing on Parenthood. She deserves to be back on tv and back in a nuanced role
I recently rewatched GG and am currently rewatching Parenthood, and while I like Lauren Graham a lot, I can’t help feeling that they are variations of the same very self-absorbed, irresponsible, inconsiderate adult who is creepily obsessed with their children lol. I wanna see her in something else!
Nuanced? Lmao Sarah from Parenthood is basically the same character as Lorelai on GG. And I’m saying this as a MASSIVE Parenthood fan.
Lauren makes it clear in her book that Lorelai is her favorite character she’s ever played.
I’m not holding my breath on this one, but if Lauren, Scott, and Alexis were in, I’d be too. I’d be all in.
The first three seasons gave us an intelligent show with a heart, not just a cute show. It gave us a Rory that deserved to be seen as special — she had a plan and focus on a goal, she wanted to be a foreign correspondent and cared about the world, and she was forgiving and compassionate. All of that was destroyed bit by bit over the remaining seasons, long before the Palladinos quit and the grand reunion proved that either they had no intention of the character realizing what was promised or a credible explanation as to why she lost her integrity. Early in the show the Palladinos joked that Rory and Lorelai would become Big and Little Edie. That’s an insult to the Beales…. Add to that the homophobia, the grotesque invocation of Pol Pot and Hitler as jokes, Rory comparing herself to Martin Luther King and on and on … and a tired show that piled on cruel jokes and flat pop references… I certainly won’t watch. And I don’t know how Michael Ausiello can let the Palladinos (especially Daniel) get away with all of the homophobic jokes and excuses about the way gay characters were treated. The CW had made history with the first teen gay kiss before the Gilmore Girls took the air. There was no excuse for making anti-gay jokes the way they did.
+1.
.
The show also body shamed people to an offensive degree.
Agree completely. I would include that in the cruel jokes I mentioned. And it’s bizarre that a show that was supposed to be a positive show for women directed most of these comments at female characters, as well as equated being gay with being feminine repeatedly (and worthy of being a punchline).
Honestly, I didn’t like the first one. It didn’t really add anything worthwhile. Imo, it destroyed Rory’s character even more than the last couple of original seasons had already done. I was such a huge Gilmore girls fan back when but I wouldn’t watch another sequel.
No thanks. Terrible writing.
Eh. If they make the sequel like similar to the tone of the show in S1-3, I’d watch it. Otherwise, probably not. I’m not interested in seeing Rory be more selfish and entitled. Anyway I’d rather see Alexis Bledel as Emily on the Handmaid’s Tale anyway. Her character arc there is my favourite on the show.
I feel very fooled me once with Gilmore Girls. I’m not sure of I want to be fooled twice.
I would love more!
If they do it now, id want a 3-part end-all-be-all chronicling Rory’s pregnancy and wrap it up for good. If it takes a few years I’d love a one-off holiday movie like Lauren talked about.
Hopefully if they do do another one, they won’t feel a need to do a Gilmore Girls greatest hits and let every character and every joke have a cameo. Instead, just tell a good story and leave out the people and things that are superfluous. And good god, never again with the Stars Hollow musical!
Good news on every level:
* Maisel is wonderful
* Multiple series for Amazon
* Potential additional Gilmore Girls
I have said so many months ago why they just have Lauren Graham produce it and directed with Amy and Dan’s writing so they still get the credit at the show Lauren does have directing in production credibilities there is a lot of fans that, love at the show so bring back the Story line can on and on
No thanks. How much more does Amy Sherman-Palladino want to run these characters into the ground?
No, thanks. I consider myself a GG fan but I was happy with the way the show ended in 2007. Didn’t like the revival.
Closer it up with the stability of loreal and Luke’s happy marriage, the birth of Rory’s baby….a little girl named Lorelai. No father involved….Rory and baby move in with Luke and Lorelai, to raise the baby in Stars Hollow. Peace, happiness and security.
Please have the gilmore girls come back! I love them! They make me feel like me and my mom do. Super close, best friend someone easy to talk to! The gilmore girls are amazing! I think they should continue a year in the life there could be more to it!
Fool me once… After the let down (IMO) of the last revival, I don’t care to watch. What a slap in the face to fans and the WB by ASP and DP. Their immaturity over leaving the original series was evident in how the characters didn’t grow in the years between the end of the series and the start of Year in the Life. There’s a big difference in college grad Rory announcing that she is pregnant and early 30s drifter Rory making the announcement as if she has no life plan so she deliberately got pregnant. While there were some sweet moments, overall AYITL was a letdown.
This gives me hope ita possible for a second revival we don’t even know who Rory ended up with it was Obvious Logan was the father but he was getting married and it was also hinted at a Jess and Rory reunion cause you could tell he loves her and would make a great dad Logan would too but it seemed like he was still wanting to get married and I doubt her being pregnant would have changed that Jess is her true soulmate I always thought it was Dean but the revival blew that chance
