Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Bryan Fuller is exiting another TV series.
The Hannibal and Pushing Daisies veteran is stepping down as showrunner of Apple’s upcoming Amazing Stories anthology reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The split is reportedly due to “creative differences”: Fuller wanted a darker, Black Mirror-style take, while Apple was aiming for more family-friendly fare. Bones creator Hart Hanson, who was slated to executive-produce along with Fuller, has exited the project as well, our sister site Deadline is reporting.
The original Amazing Stories, executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, aired on NBC from 1985 to 1987 as an anthology of sci-fi, fantasy and horror stories. A reboot was first announced in 2015 at NBC, with Fuller installed as showrunner, before the project moved to Apple last year.
This is, of course, not the first TV project Fuller has walked away from in recent years: He was slated to run CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery before exiting prior to the show’s premiere, and he (along with co-showrunner Michael Green) stepped down from Starz’s American Gods last fall after its first season.
Fuller fans can take heart, though: Last month, he announced he’s currently developing a TV adaptation of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles novels, though the project hasn’t found a network yet.
He seems really difficult. Whenever he doesn’t get his way he just walks away.
Seriously. What the heck is this guy’s problem?
Something honorable about that IMO. He has his convictions and sticks to them.
Then write a book. Television is about compromise and teamwork. There’s no singular vision in the medium. Collaboration is the point.
Unless you’re British. Then it’s cool to do it all by yourself.
Because his style is an art-form. Pushing Daisies and Hannibal are some of the most beautiful shows ever made. He left Dead Like Me when Showtime didn’t want to make the dad gay, even though Queer as Folk was there. If you have one vision for a show and the studio has the exact oppisite than it’s time to move on. More so before the show starts.
You probably hit on it here; he want’s to gay up every TV show he gets his hands on, but it’s unnecessary and often detrimental to the story, so there’s pushback and he sashays out.
hes a genius and if he had an idea for the show which apple is clearly trying to be like a christian channel it makes sense for him to exit.
You realize Apple CEO Tim Cook is a gay Buddhist. #sashayaway
which makes less sense, tim himself stated that he didnt want any nudity in his shows or any improper language so yea…… inform yourself
Yes Grand Dragon inform us…
Not even “basic cable cursing” than? I might have to redefine “basic cable cursing” with FX, USA and SyFy now allowing F bombs on some of their shows (and Bellevue on WGN). That fits in with the rumors that Apple wants their TV series able to be displayed in Apple stores, though you would think an edited clean version for instore use would be easy to do. Calling it “like a Christian channel” seems unfair, the better comparison would be broadcast TV.
the christian comment was obviously an exaggeration jesus christ.
So what? Not wanting nudity and swearing on his “network” do not preclude any characters being gay.
Hannibal had no nudity at all, no swearing at all, and still is the darkest, most terrifying and honest television produced in last 30 years.
He has a history of doing this. He really only cares about himself. He makes some amazing shows, Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies for example, and then walks away when something isn’t going his way with not one f&*$* given for his fans. That’s why I stopped watching anything he puts out. Always a let down in the end.
So Hannibal, Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me are let downs?
I’ve really enjoyed everything he’s done in the past, so I’m excited to see what he ends up doing next, but this is getting kind of ridiculous.
#TeamApple. There’s plenty of dark and moody anthology shows out there already. The original series was light, funny and had a real Spielberg touch to many episodes. This new series should be the same as a point of difference.
Also, Bryan Fuller just seems like a control freak.
Jesus. He must be creatively different from most of Hollywood at this point.
I approve of a lighter, family-friendly feel. Crank up the nostalgia! Maybe he should try rebooting “Tales From the Darkside” if he wants a darker take on an anthology series…
Amazing Stories should be light hearted and not a Black Mirror type show. I like Fuller’s work, but I’m surprised by how hard he is to deal with it and how poorly a lot of his stuff does he continues to get high profile jobs.
I’m sorry but how do you get “Black Mirror-type stories” for a show with “Amazing” in the title? This is the first time I’m on the opposite side of Fuller about departing a project.
.
Hopefully he doesn’t bail on the Vampire Chronicles. Seems like it’s right up his alley and hopefully it lands somewhere soon. Maybe focusing on one project for the time being will help him.
If he had problems with Gaiman, he’s guaranteed to have them with Anne Rice.
Problems were with the studio and funding, not with Gaiman.
apple is literally going to end up being like hallmark channel for streaming
Doubtful, with the shows that are being developed with their streaming service
It’s become clear he’s the problem.
Yep.
I admire him for sticking to his guns and not compromising his creativity to studio heads who think they know better – or just want something different than him. It’s not a sign that he is difficult as we’ve seen lately with Star Wars directors sometimes things just don’t gel together and people depart, just with the internet now we know all about it. Much rather he work on Vampire Chronicles than this anyway (now just have to hope everything works out with that).
If he wants total control, then he is in the wrong business. Unless he finds someone to write a blank check for him, he has to compromise a bit! (For Hannibal, the foreign money investment allowed him to tell NBC to go to hell, but once the money ran out NBC cancelled the show.) I am an absolute fan, but at this point I just have to wash my hands of him.
Meh, that show never seemed like a good fit for him anyway.
This man is absurd. He cannot keep a job to save his life.
“If you run into an a$$hole in the morning, you ran into an a$$hole. If you run into a$$holes all day, you’re the a$$hole.”
Isn’t anthology reboot an oxymoron. Isn’t every episode essentially a reboot?
Why are they remaking a show which was a failure?
Why do people keep asking him to be in projects when they don’t actually believe in his vision? That makes no sense. Every time he leaves a show is because someone doesn’t agree with his creative decisions, and he clearly won’t give ’em up. If you actually hire him to do something you should have that in mind, cause it’s becoming ridiculous how studios keep on hiring him and trying to change what he wants to do. Try to hire him because you actually believe in what he wants to do for a change
I enjoy Bryan Fullers work, i do. there is no denying, however, that his shows have simply not connected, for whatever reason, with a main stream audience. show after show of his has disappointed in the ratings. Fuller has to accept that hes gonna have to play ball in the future with some networks. Honestly you cant blame networks for wanting to tweak Fullers work to try and finally reach that main stream audience. I want Bryan to succeed but something hes doing isn’t working. I hope he can pull it all together for the Vampire Chronicles
Dude why can’t you keep a gig????
This is why I don’t get invented in Fuller’s name being on a project
Pretty soon, he’s going to be “creatively different” all the way out of the business. I disagree with him on this one. The original Amazing Stories WAS light, family fare. Why change it into a dark, moody, dystopian world? There’s already a Black Mirror, so why try to duplicate it?
