When those first American patriots declared our independence from England on that July day in 1776, our freedom was far from guaranteed.
Many times over the next seven years, it appeared likely that the British would defeat us.
But we survived to become a nation, a great nation.
Thanks to those brave souls who united in a great cause, we have kept that hard-won freedom for 248 years.
And although, over the decades, our liberty has been threatened time and time again, in peace and in war, generation after generation of Americans have proudly served here at home and overseas.
They wore our nation's uniforms in 1812.
They preserved the Union in the time of Lincoln, bravely fought overseas in World War I, and led the epic struggle to end global tyranny in the Second World War.
They have served in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan and serve today, an all-volunteer military on call and on duty 24/7 to ensure we can live our lives safe and secure from those who would do us harm.
Simply put, they are the defenders of our freedom, and we owe them a debt we can never repay.
