Talk Like TED: No Seth McFarlane. No Bears. All Carmine. Pretty Good Insights.
I'm an early TEDster. Like, 2002.Ze Frank got me rockin'.Rives kept me rollin'.Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor brought me to tears. In Talk Like TED, Carmine Gallo expounds in example after example, how the Best of the TED stage execute badass, world-class presentations.(If you get a moment, the one's above are still worth a watch... go ahead, I'll wait...;-)What Gallo's (audio)book drills home is how key authentic storytelling, delivery, timing and audience engagement are to the success of your presentation. Few presentations are as polished, timely and informative as those selected to show on TED-dot-com and their YouTube channel.(Yes, Big Think, the EG and others are right up there. But TED does an incredible job with finding and presenting challenging ideas from mostly otherwise invisible but truly inspiring folks).Carmine does a great job of breaking down each element of each talk.Expounding on the core approach the presenter uses. Then breaking it down further to cover it in detail. It can appear redundant. But in reflection, it definitely drills it into your noggin'.I was hoping for a few more takeaways. But I think he saved those for The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs.As a "trick" to help embed these ideas into my thick skull, I filled a large bottle with watered down BAWLS Guarana Drink with NooJuice Nootropic Beet Juice Energy Drink and took a pleasant drive up the Columbia Gorge.A few hours later, I was spinning the last CD in the series as the sun set on the beautiful Pacific Northwest. And I felt compelled to orate a few of my favorite stories.Carmine does a good job on this.If you're new to storytelling, I suggest adding Big Think, The Moth and Snap Judgement to your listening list. They will greatly expand your presentation and storytelling vocabulary. And who knows?Maybe get you an invite to speak on the TED stage...;-)

I wish I had read this ten years ago. The best part is that you can go and watch and listen to these speakers referenced in the book, and yourself see the results of what the author talks about. Amazing read.

I'll preface this by saying that books written by business coaches/consultants usually annoy the heck out of me, as they are generally filled with narcissistic self-references and do a horrendous job summarizing actual scientific findings. To some extent, this book does the same. But while other such books usually garner 1-star reviews from me, "Talk Like Ted" has its redeeming qualities. As many others have noted, this could have been a much, much shorter book; as such, I recommend taking what you need from it and skipping the rest, as it's easy to get the point of each chapter by the first one-third of it. I liked the main point each chapter provides, but I felt like they fell short on application. For example, in Chapter 1, Gallo repeats over and over again the importance of passion, but does nothing to provide guidance on how the reader can find such passion. I guess this reflects his lack of knowledge of the science behind such principles. Despite all of the shortcomings of this book, though, I do believe a reader can sort through it for things to apply to one's own presentation opportunities. At the very least, while nothing in this book is cutting edge knowledge, it does contain enough reminders that can escape our consciousness after a while.

Gallo's in-depth analysis of the best speakers of our time is a superb resource sure to up your public speaking game. Last fall I drew heavily on it while preparing and delivering a Veterans Day presentation for two local middle schools. "Tell stories" and "use emotionally potent examples" served as my guiding principles, and they made everything easier to remember, more fun to deliver, and more pleasurable for the audience to receive.

This isn't a basic how-to for novice speakers, but it doesn't claim to be. For comprehensive coverage of the nuts and bolts basics, consider Carnegie's timeless classic, The Art of Public Speaking (its copyright is expired, and so can be found online for free), or for more concise coverage of the same, consider my
The Best Public Speaking Book: How to Conquer Nervousness, Polish Your Authentic Stage Self, Develop & Deliver Dynamite Presentations . (When I revise The Best Public Speaking Book, Gallo will be cited for sure!)

Thanks for the excellent book, Gallo! You and Brian Tracy have helped take my public speaking game to the next level, and Talk Like Ted is a resource I anticipate revisiting many times.
