Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Summer Ball:

“Lupica is at his best when he puts the reader right in the center of the action on the court. His game descriptions are fast, accurate, and exciting. Young sports-fiction fans will eat this up.” –
Booklist

“Sports fans will relish the on-court action, expertly rendered in Lupica's taut prose. This worthy sequel to
Travel Team should earn a wide audience.” –School Library Journal

“Lupica knows his basketball and knows how to spin a page-turner of a story. Those who enjoyed the first installment of Danny's story will be thrilled to read a sequel, and even those middle school readers who are not huge sports fans will want to cheer for Danny Walker, who proves that determination can be a whole lot bigger than height.” –

Mike Lupica is one of the most prominent sports writers in America. His longevity at the top of his field is based on his experience and insider's knowledge, coupled with a provocative presentation that takes an uncompromising look at the tumultuous world of professional sports. Today he is a syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News, which includes his popular “Shooting from the Lip” column, which appears every Sunday. He began his newspaper career covering the New York Knicks for the New York Post at age 23. He became the youngest columnist ever at a New York paper with the New York Daily News, which he joined in 1977. For more than 30 years, Lupica has added magazines, novels, sports biographies, other non-fiction books on sports, as well as television to his professional resume. For the past fifteen years, he has been a TV anchor for ESPN's The Sports Reporters. He also hosted his own program, The Mike Lupica Show on ESPN2. In 1987, Lupica launched “The Sporting Life” column in Esquire magazine. He has published articles in other magazines, including Sport, World Tennis, Tennis, Golf Digest, Playboy, Sports Illustrated, ESPN: The Magazine, Men's Journal and Parade. He has received numerous honors, including the 2003 Jim Murray Award from the National Football Foundation. Mike Lupica co-wrote autobiographies with Reggie Jackson and Bill Parcells, collaborated with noted author and screenwriter, William Goldman on Wait Till Next Year, and wrote The Summer of '98, Mad as Hell: How Sports Got Away from the Fans and How We Get It Back and Shooting From the Lip, a collection of columns. In addition, he has written a number of novels, including Dead Air, Extra Credits, Limited Partner, Jump, Full Court Press, Red Zone, Too Far and national bestsellers Wild Pitch and Bump and Run. Dead Air was nominated for the Edgar Allen Poe Award for Best First Mystery and became a CBS television move, “Money, Power, Murder” to which Lupica contributed the teleplay. Over the years he has been a regular on the CBS Morning News, Good Morning America and The MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour. On the radio, he has made frequent appearances on Imus in the Morning since the early 1980s. His previous young adult novels, Travel Team, Heat, Miracle on 49th Street, and the summer hit for 2007, Summer Ball, have shot up the New York Times bestseller list. Lupica is also what he describes as a “serial Little League coach,” a youth basketball coach, and a soccer coach for his four children, three sons and a daughter. He and his family live in Connecticut.

I’m so grateful for Mike Lupica books - my very active kids 11 and 12 yrs pick up his books and initiate reading daily - they keep asking for more! It’s an incredible gift to have peace in the content they read and that excited them to dive in!

Mike Lupica writes another great book called “Summer Ball”. Thirteen year old Danny is going to a basketball camp called The Wright Way. But, before Danny left he had some trouble with Tess. He had gotten upset that she had been spending so much time with Mr. Perfect according to Danny. When Danny gets to camp everything starts to go wrong. First he couldn’t bunk with Ty, Will, and Tarik. Then he had to go bunk with the eleven and twelve year olds. A little later Danny runs into Rasheed (the kid that Danny played against in the championship game last year. (Also the kid he “flopped” on according to his friends) ). The next day Danny and his friends were put into teams. Danny, Will and Tarik were put on the same team but Rasheed was on the team too. When Danny got to the court where his team was supposed to practice it only got worse. Danny’s coach was Ed Powers, the guy that Danny’s dad could have played for instead of Syracuse. “Did your dad ever tell you the story about how he turned me down and went to Syracuse instead” (Pg. 53) .So right away Danny knew this was going to be one bad summer. After days of practices and games, it was time for the tournament. They beat the Bulls in the first round of the play-offs. In the second round Danny’s team beat Ty’s to get to the championship game on Saturday against Lamar. Will Danny’s team beat Lamar’s team and become champions? Will Danny actually have a fun summer? I recommend this book to anyone who has read the first the book and anyone from 6th grade and up. Also, for twelve year olds and up too.

The start of the book was boring. But as soon as he reaches Right Way camp I couldn't put the book down. From the ups and down I felt like I was right there next to Danny even when the hardest problems came time to face like Lamar and his Coach, Coach Powers. A great amazing story written by Mike Lupica.

Mike Lupica writes great books! My sons are not big readers but really enjoy reading the Mike Lupica book series. I will continue to purchase these books as long as they continue with the desire to read on their own. I would recommend these books to anyone who has a child interested in sports but not so interested in reading. You won't believe how these books will make them pick up the book and read with out being asked.

My 8 year old son is an excellent reader. However, I read this to him because a lot of it is stuff that would go over his head. i'd prefer to explain along the way. We also read Travel Team. Excellent books!
