Queen condemns Donald Trump's use of We Are The Champions

At the first night of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, emerged, backlit and shrouded in concert-style fog, as Queen’s “We Are The Champions” blasted through Quicken Loans Arena — and Twitter wasn’t having it: Posts about how the band’s late, iconic frontman Freddie Mercury would have lamented the choice began emerging, especially because Mercury was gay and the the official GOP platform condemns the Supreme Court’s ruling that states must observe same-sex marriages as legitimate.

The band confirmed their distaste for Trump’s song choice Tuesday morning, posting a succinct, “An unauthorized use at the Republican Convention against our wishes – Queen,” across their platforms.

This is the second time surviving member and lead guitarist Brian May has condemned the Trump campaign for using the tune. In June, after Trump featured the song during a campaign event, the 69-year-old issued a statement on his website saying the use “was neither sought nor given,” adding that it “has always been against our policy” for political campaigns to use Queen music. He also responded to a fan at the time, promising to “make sure we take what steps we can to dissociate ourselves from Donald Trump’s unsavory campaign.”
