Jewish niche streaming service ChaiFlicks acquires rights to acclaimed Franz Kafka film ‘The Glory of Life’

ChaiFlicks, the world’s leading streaming platform for Jewish storytelling, has acquired the rights to the critically acclaimed film “The Glory of Life” that examines the final year in the life of the acclaimed German-language writer and novelist Franz Kafka that includes his first true romance. The streamer’s sister company Menemsha Films is currently distributing the movie, which comes from the German-based Tempest Film Produktion GmbH and Lotus Flmproduktion GmbH, to film festivals and theaters across North America. The film made its North American premiere at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival in July.

ChaiFlicks also in June launched the critically acclaimed, six-part scripted series “Kafka” timed to the 100th anniversary of the famed Bohemian writer’s death. The service, which is exclusively dedicated to Jewish content and is now available in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, will announce a launch date for “The Glory of Life” later this year. The film, directed by Georg Maas and Judith Kaufmann, stars Romanian actor Sabin Tambrea in he lead role.

A summary of “The Glory of Life”: Kafka had never allowed himself to experience intimacy, having suffered from tuberculosis and dependent on his overbearing family. But the worldly-wide Dora Diamant (played by Henriette Confurius) accepts him as he is. Amd he accepts her. The two meet in 1923 on the Baltic Sea coast, where he’s convalescing and she’s working in a Jewish Volksheim. Together they travel to Berlin and, when Franz’s health deteriorates rapidly, to a sanatorium in Austria. Barely a year after they meet, he dies at 40 of tuberculosis. The memory of their time together will impact Dora for the rest of her life.

Kafka, born in Prague in 1883, became one of the greatest figures in literary history. His best known works include the novella “The Metamorphosis” and the novels “The Trial” and “The Castle.” The TV series about his life follows Kafka’s difficult relationship with his tyrannical father as well as his numerous love affairs.
