Miles Teller is in negotiations to join Shailene Woodley in Adrift, a survival thriller being made by STX Entertainment.
Baltasar Kormakur, who tackled the people vs. nature theme in Everest, is attached to direct the project, which is based on the true story of a woman who sets off on a sailing trip to Tahiti with her fiance but, following a massive storm, finds herself alone at sea with her boat in ruins. The story, which toggles between the couple’s past courtship and the perilous present, follows her attempts to save herself and the man she loves on a 1,500-mile journey.
If a deal is made, Teller would play her husband. (And, if the deal closes, it will mark the fifth film Teller and Woodley have worked on together following The Spectacular Now and a trio of Divergent movies.)
Aaron and Jordan Kandell, who worked on Disney’s animated hit Moana, wrote the script on spec. The Kandells are also producing the project, which is eyeing a summer shoot.
Teller will shoot Adrift before he moves on to Too Old to Die Young, Amazon’s crime-thriller series from Drive filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn that explores a hidden world of assassins.
The actor has two features lined up for release this year. First up is Granite Mountain, a true-life firefighting drama directed by Joseph Kosinski and set for a Sept. 22 release, followed by Thank You for Your Service, a drama about combat vets dealing with PTSD, which is set to bow Oct. 27.
Teller is repped by CAA and Stone Genow.
