36 years have passed between the original “Beetlejuice” and its upcoming sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and the love for cinema emitting from the team behind both projects only seems to have grown.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, past collaborators Winona Ryder and Tim Burton, as well as newcomer and “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega, all shared similar views on the alchemy that was formed in the making of the new film.
“Once we started talking, and I remember it was on our third day together, the day we shot the scene in the attic, we never stopped,” Ryder told Vanity Fair. “It almost felt holy, like some sort of blessing from above, which, I think, is because we share the belief that film can be a kind of a religious experience.”
Ryder also said formed a deep, “sacred” bond with Ortega while filming “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in London. For Ortega, it was a one-of-a-kind experience.

Tomorrow marks 10 years since we lost the one-of-a-kind talent, joy, and humanity of Robin Williams. The death of the Oscar-winning actor and comedian in 2014 shocked fans and colleagues alike, with an outpouring of memories, love, and support for his family and friends following in its wake.
To this day, the people who have been fortunate enough to have known Williams personally or worked with him continue sharing stories, with many contributing some recently for a piece in Vanity Fair, including his “Mrs. Doubtfire” co-star Sally Field.
“I never shared this story before,” Field said. “I was in the camper outside of the courtroom where we were shooting the divorce scene. My father had a stroke a couple of years before, and was in a nursing facility. I got a phone call from the doctor saying my father had passed, a massive stroke.”

Marvel Animation’s D23 panel today in Anaheim, California, was far more subdued than Marvel’s live-action panel last night, which showed off trailers for “Daredevil: Born Again,” “Ironheart,” and “Agatha All Along.” Nonetheless, while short on news, trailers, or concrete release dates, the Marvel Animation panel did provide some updates.
The biggest of them all, arguably, was the news that season 3 of “What…If?

One of the biggest stories out of Cannes this year was Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof’s valiant escape from Iran after being sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging simply for making films that speak out against injustices going on in his home country.
Rasoulof received a heroes welcome along the Croisette, where his latest film, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” debuted to rave reviews, earning him a Special Award from the Cannes jury led by Greta Gerwig. But despite its acclaim and his desire to follow the film wherever it screens, Rasoulof isn’t sure he’ll be able to be there to showcase it in the United States or North America, including for screenings at TIFF and NYFF this fall.

When Disney first got into the live-action adaptation game, remaking their classic animated IP with the use of ever-advancing visual effects, first with “The Jungle Book” in 1994, then officially with Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” in 2010, it felt odd they would not kick off the endeavor with their first animated film, made in 1937, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
For the most part, many of these remakes, from Guy Ritchie’s Will Smith-led “Aladdin” to Jon Favreau’s photo-realistic “The Lion King,” failed to meet the magic of their source material. But they did rake in big bucks at the box office, and that’s all Disney needs to keep the factory churning them out. But after unveiling the first teaser for “Snow White” at D23 on Friday, August 9, the Mouse House may be whistling all the way to the bank.

The official announcement at D23 of Pixar’s Andrew Stanton writing and directing “Toy Story 5” is a big deal. Stanton has co-written the previous four “Toy Story” films, receiving Oscar nominations for the original and the third film.
But now as a director, he finally gets to be in total control of the franchise he helped establish. So if there was going to be a fifth “Toy Story,” he’s the perfect director for a couple of reasons.
The first is that, since “Wall-e,” Stanton has been fascinated with science fiction and the dangers of ubiquitous technology. The story for the fifth “Toy Story” allows him to double down on that fascination.
“Let’s be real,” Stanton told the packed Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday night. “Toys have some serious competition these days with phones, tablets, and technology everywhere. So, this time around, it’s toys vs. tech.

First it was “Agatha: House of Harkness.” Then it was “Agatha: Coven of Chaos.” For a time we thought it might be called “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.” But finally, after years of waiting, we are finally getting “Agatha All Along.”
The spin-off Disney+ series was announced shortly after the breakout success of the Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany-led “WandaVision,” which introduced Kathryn Hahn to the MCU as Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch envious of Wanda/Scarlett Witch’s limitless abilities. While the end of “WandaVision” saw Agatha lose her magic and be trapped in the persona she used to try and fool Wanda, a trailer that premiered Friday, August 9, at D23 revealed Agatha’s intention to earn her powers back by gathering her coven and walking the Witches’ Road. This trailer can be viewed below.

A return to Pandora is on the horizon. Disney really went for broke during their D23 Expo. Filmmaker James Cameron took to the stage to tease “Avatar 3” and the director revealed a new title for the movie, “Avatar: Fire And Ash.”
“I came 7,000 miles from New Zealand for this,” Cameron told the crowd, but wasn’t ready to unveil any new footage yet.

Can you feel the love tonight? The audience at D23 certainly could as they were greeted to the world premiere trailer of Barry Jenkins’ upcoming “Lion King” prequel, “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Production on the film has been underway for years, but the wait is finally nearing an end as it’s set to be released in theaters December 20 of this year, just in time for Christmas.
Jenkins’ “Mufasa” uses the same photorealistic imagery present in Jon Favreau’s remake of “The Lion King” from 2019 and will also feature some of the same voice cast including Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani. The narrative is said to be told from the perspective of Rafiki communicating the story of one of Pride Land’s great leaders to Simba and Nala’s child, Kiara, played by Beyoncé’s actual daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. If you were scratching your head when Oscar-winning arthouse indie filmmaker Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”) was announced as the director of “Mufasa: The Lion King,” a prequel to Jon Favreau’s billion-dollar grossing “The Lion King” remake—it’s “live-action,” but really photorealistic animated—you weren’t the only one puzzled. But filmmakers like to spread their wings, play with technology, learn, and grow, so Jenkins just might be following in the footsteps of Favreau, who made small-scale comedies at first and then quickly graduated to blockbusters and huge I.P.

In the past decade, Disney has had immense success by turning all its animated classics into action films. The latest iteration of that model continues with “Snow White,” a live-action musical reimagining of the classic 1937 film “Snow White And The Seven Dwarves.” Coming to theaters on March 21, 2025, Disney released a new teaser trailer for the film at D23.

Fresh off their appearance at Comic-Con, arguably more scaled back than usual, Marvel Studios was back at Disney’s D23 Expo, and while the film was the driving promotional force in San Diego, in Anaheim, Marvel Television was given the spotlight and brought the goods. Starting with their upcoming series “Agatha All Along,” a fantasy dark comedy mini-series and follow-up to “WandaVision” centering on Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness villain from that show, Marvel’s Kevin Feige was on stage to unveil a new trailer for the spin-off.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Cheerleaders Gone… Bank Robbing?
The year 2000 was the New Hollywood of cheerleaders in film. After years of movies in which teen girls with pom poms were reduced to one-note bitches and bimbos, Y2K saw the easy-to-stereotype athletes receive a sudden rush of cinematic respect with Peyton Reed’s instant classic “Bring It On.”
Starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union, the story of a rivalry between two cheer squads combined an authentic love for the (extremely grueling) work of cheer captains with fun flirty comedy and a surprisingly intelligent depiction of cultural appropriation.

One of the hotly anticipated shows set to arrive in 2025 is the second season of “Andor.” At D23, fans were treated to a trailer and featurette for the upcoming sci-fi series that serves as a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” though unfortunately, it wasn’t placed online. On stage to update various Lucasfilm projects, President Kathleen Kennedy revealed more details about the space childhood adventure series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” and unveiled the first teaser trailer to the crowd.
Created and written by Jon Watts (Sony’s Marvel-produced ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy) and Christopher Ford, “Skeleton Crew” follows four kids who get lost in a faraway galaxy and must find their way home.

With “Inside Out 2” blowing the roof off the summer box office, Disney and Pixar are all steam ahead on the sequel train. Next up on the slate is a return to the IP that reshaped the world of animation, “Toy Story 5.” Disney CEO Bob Iger announced development on the new installment in early 2023, with a release date later being set for June 19, 2026. At the same time as Iger’s announcement came, Buzz Lightyear star Tim Allen also shared via X, formerly known as Twitter, that he would be lending his voice to the iconic character once again. Though it had been rumored Pixar brain trust member and creative mainstay Andrew Stanton would be directing the 5th entry in the long-running animated film series, his involvement was confirmed at D23 today, in addition to new details being revealed.

Curious how far Disney will go to expand on the popularity of a relatively new character in their arsenal? Consider the fact that this sequel was initially set to be a musical series on Disney+, but Bob Iger had so much faith in it, he decided to shift it into a theatrical sequel at the same time as they were prepping a live action remake of the first film. While the original “Moana” was helmed by Disney mainstays Ron Clements and John Musker, the sequel will be guided by first-time director David Derrick Jr., who was a storyboard artist on the first film as well as “The Lion King” (2019), “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and “Encanto.”

If it’s not evident from announcements made earlier this winter, Disney really tried to dazzle Wall Street and its investors on its fiscal first-quarter earnings call for 2024. With Marvel rolling out the return of the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU at Hall H of Comic Con a few weeks ago, expectations are at a fever pitch for the surprises in store at D23 in Anaheim this weekend. Will guests get a sneak peek at James Cameron’s next installment in the “Avatar” saga? Is footage from “Zootopia 2” or Pixar’s latest original “Elio” ready to seen? With Marvel news remaining relatively lite at Comic Con, will we hear more about some of their larger plans or even get trailers for Disney+ series like “Agatha All Along” and “Daredevil: Born Again?” The possibilities are endless and fans are itching to find out more.

It’s a bad time to be Eli Roth.
A miscalculation of near-mythic proportions, “Borderlands” has a whopping six percent on Rotten Tomatoes heading into its opening weekend. Those bad reviews (IndieWire gave it a “C-“) are the least of the “Hostel” filmmaker’s problems, as Lionsgate’s misguided video game adaptation has inspired assessments of not only the director’s filmography but also whether his impact on pop culture has been at all valuable.
This ranking can’t account for all of that. If you’re a fan of the types of genre films that Roth makes, read on. If you’re not, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and enjoy the “Borderlands” dogpile — a massive multiplayer online affair now available free of charge.
Last year, Roth’s meaty and murderous “Thanksgiving” did well for the provocateur. The seasonal holiday slasher, starring Nell Verlaque, Patrick Dempsey, and Addison Rae among others,...

Sadie Sink is admitting that she didn’t anticipate her “Stranger Things” character Max to be such a breakout star.
The actress told Variety that after joining the hit Netflix series in Season 2 at age 14, she could not have predicted the viral adoration for her role of Max by Season 4. The cliffhanger ending for the season included Max being in a coma after facing off with Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
“I really didn’t think people would care all that much about her journey,” Sink said. Even when Max went viral with the “Running Up That Hill” sequence, Sink was still shocked: “I was kind of like, ‘That’s cool.'”
The “A Sacrifice” actress added, “I think I’m definitely numb to a lot of things now, which is a good thing. I think it keeps you stable.”

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for “Deadpool & Wolverine.”]
One of the highlights of “Deadpool & Wolverine” was the climactic Ant-Man Arena battle. That’s where Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) team up with Elektra (Jennifer Garner), X-23 (Dafne Keen), Blade (Wesley Snipes), and Gambit (Channing Tatum) to fight Cassandra Nova’s (Emma Corwin) henchmen. But the memorably wintry look was not planned.
That’s because they were supposed to shoot the battle last summer at Pinewood Studios but got delayed by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. When production resumed in December, the U.K.’s bleak skies weren’t what they had planned for. Plus, they now had snow to contend with.
Ilm was in charge of VFX for the battle (under the supervision of Vincent Papaix), so they brainstormed with Marvel production VFX supervisor Swen Gillberg to figure out how they could change the look. “I was on set one day where...

As Bruce Springsteen might sing today about cable TV: 57 channels, and nothin’ is worth much.
Cable television was born in the late 1940s but not heavily adopted in the U.S. until about 40 years later. It’s taken all of three days this week to pronounce it dead.
On Wednesday afternoon, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it had reassessed the value of its cable networks. The outcome: the combination of the WarnerMedia channels and Discovery, Inc. networks are worth $9.1 billion less than David Zaslav & co. originally thought. That’s “billion” with the largest “B” you’ve ever seen in your life.
Not to be outdone, just 24 hours later, Paramount Global announced its Viacom cable channels had previously been overvalued (on the books) by $5.98 billion.
It was a whirlwind, and the devastation wasn’t even done yet. (“Twisters” in theaters now!)
Exactly 15 hours after that, AMC Networks announced its own goodwill impairment charge.

Director India Donaldson’s first feature film, “Good One,” is, on the surface, a pretty simple story: A family camping trip in upstate New York gets considerably more awkward when it ends up being only father-daughter pair Chris (James Le Gros) and Sam (Lily Collias) and Chris’s longtime friend Matt (Danny McCarthy) spending three days in the woods. Sam’s about to head off to college, while Chris and Matt can’t seem to escape the emotional trail loops, as it were, that they’ve already blazed for themselves. What happens on the trip sets down some of Sam’s path as an adult in ways that feel both heartbreaking and necessary.
But just because something is simple doesn’t mean it was easy. Donaldson only had 12 days to shoot the film, most of it spent outside in the Catskills — on 300 privately owned acres near the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park,...

In the world of American recording studios, there’s Electric Lady Studios, and then there’s everyone else. The iconic Greenwich Village studio was commissioned by Jimi Hendrix as a personal creative haven in the late 1960s, but quickly became a holy ground for musicians of all genres. Pull an iconic ’70s rock album out of a hat and there’s a decent chance it was recorded at Electric Lady, as everyone from Stevie Wonder and The Rolling Stones to Patti Smith and David Bowie used the studio at the height of its powers. The state-of-the-art recording technology and tangible connection to American music history have only added to its allure in recent years, and artists such as Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé now regularly flock to the storied studio to record new albums.

Sorry, millennials, but Warner Bros. Discovery does not care about your nostalgia. A week after announcing the sunsetting of the Boomerang website (effective September 30), Wbd has quietly shut down the Cartoon Network website. It now invites visitors to subscribe to Max for $9.99 a month.
Those who still have a cable subscription, however, can blithely continue watching Boomerang and Cartoon Network programming, making us question why we ever cut cords to begin with.

The enduring legacy of campy cult favorite “Ed Wood” is still celebrated 30 years later.

In its first two seasons, Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” became one of television’s most beloved comedies. The chemistry between mystery-solving neighbors Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez yielded not only big laughs but suspense, poignancy, and sweet (if often thwarted) romance. For Season 3, a whole new element was introduced into the mix as “Only Murders in the Building” added another genre to its story and became, at times, a musical.
“My all time favorite project of the season was creating the look and scenery for the Broadway show from scratch,” production designer Patrick Howe told IndieWire, noting that the key was to tie not only the backstage areas to what was happening on stage but to connect the show-within-a-show to the larger narrative. “I chose to make all those spaces tie together and tie the whole season up nicely by the way we’re presenting...

You’d think after eight seasons of being under the gun during production of “Game of Thrones” that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would have found luxurious the extended pandemic writing process for Netflix series “3 Body Problem.” But that’s not how Benioff experienced it.
“It didn’t feel that way,” he said on a Zoom with co-creator Alexander Woo. “We were champing at the bit. We had a year-long negotiation to get the rights but meanwhile the three of us were not only doing zooms, we actually started writing just because we were so antsy to get going. And then we had [the pandemic]: it took a very long time before we finally got on set. Even though we had all that time, we still ended up having to rewrite everything. And go back for reshoots. Like a first season of any show, you’re trying to figure it out.

Floral colors complete with big block lettering and pretty designs dominate Targets and bookstores, where her bestsellers (8.6 million copies in 2022 alone) have found a massive fan base through word of mouth as well as newer phenomenons like BookTok recommendations.
Most of Hoover’s novels were self-published YA and romance tales before she broke big with 2016’s “It Ends with Us,” a movie adaptation of which is in theaters this weekend, starring Blake Lively. You’d be forgiven for thinking it was a typical romantic triangle drama, but the real plot is much darker: “It Ends with Us” follows Lily Blossom Bloom (…yes) a flower shop owner who thinks she’s found the charming love of her life, Ryle, only to discover her world turned upside down when...

Kate Winslet wanted her Lee Miller biopic to be as real as possible.
The actress, who also produces the WWII-set indie, portrays former model turned war correspondent and photographer Miller in “Lee.” Winslet told Harper’s Bazaar U.K. that she deliberately wanted to showcase her real body and not hide her “belly rolls” while in character.
“There’s a bit where Lee’s sitting on a bench in a bikini,” Winslet said. “And one of the crew came up between takes and said, ‘You might want to sit up straighter.’ So you can’t see my belly rolls? Not on your life! It was deliberate, you know?”
Winslet added that she takes “pride” in her aging process.
“It is my life on my face, and that matters,” the Oscar winner said. “It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up. I think people know better than to say,...

*Spoilers, I guess?* If the cat wasn’t out of the bag, it sure was. So blame Ryan Reynolds for spoilers as he has confirmed every “Deadpool & Wolverine” came out there, including Channing Tatum as Gambit on his social media channels.
As many fans will know, Tatum was trying to make a name for himself as a Gambit for several years by playing the character for Marvel’s days at 20th Century Fox—hence the “Deadpool & Wolverine” cameo that facilitated this long-time dream.

Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis is setting out to dismantle the “hierarchy” of Hollywood sets.
The actress spoke with her “Borderlands” co-star Kevin Hart about how she famously asks film crews to wear name tags in an effort to be “equitable” as “there isn’t hierarchy in art.”
“There’s something really uneven about our position on a set, on a movie, in this arena,” Curtis said to Hart on his SiriusXM podcast “Gold Minds.” “You guys know our names, we don’t know yours. There’s something inequitable to me about that…On a movie set, if we were all working together, we would all be wearing name tags so that tomorrow when we came in, I would be able to then say ‘good morning [Sabine]’ without [a] thought because I’ve learned her name.”
She added, “I just want it to be equitable because it’s an important thing.

The State of the Race
Things have been undeniably bleak for a while in the documentary space, but at the moment, it does feel like the genre is on an upswing. Given how the Sundance Film Festival has long been the primary launchpad for Best Documentary Feature Oscar contenders it was reassuring to see so many of the documentaries that screened there be so well-received by audiences and secure distribution along the way.
In addition to winning the Audience Award for the U.S. Documentary section, “Daughters” won overall Festival Favorite at Sundance this year.

Dan Stevens thinks the “Euphoria” set was a little cuckoo — and he wasn’t even on the show.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Stevens raved about his “Cuckoo” co-star Hunter Schafer. Stevens believes she had a great experience on their shared film set; “Cuckoo” is Schafer’s first movie. The same cannot be said for the general experience on what became Schafer’s breakout role, HBO’s “Euphoria.”
“By all accounts,” Stevens said, the “Euphoria” experience was “not a terribly pleasant one.”
“Her only experience prior to this was working on ‘Euphoria,’ which is a very, very different experience, and by all accounts, not a terribly pleasant one,” Stevens said. “I think it was refreshing and delightful for her to realize that not every job needs to be like ‘Euphoria.’ It was nice to be able to present that and to be a part of that. We can still shoot this incredibly fucked-up,...

In the decades since its 1985 release, director Paul Schrader’s “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters,” based on the life and work of the prolific Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, has grown in stature to become a revered classic — so much so that during IndieWire’s 80s Week, we ranked it the second best film of the decade, just behind Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.”
For such a celebrated film about one of the most notable Japanese artists of the 20th century, it’s remarkable the film has never been screened in Japan. But according to Schrader, that may change this fall. While taking part in a post-screening Q&a as part of Metrograph’s membership series last month, Schrader broke the news that the Tokyo International Film Festival is looking to give “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters” its Japanese premiere. All right, this news report came from me, but I couldn’t confirm it through any proper channels. Regardless, Deadline and several trades have confirmed my report: Joaquin Phoenix has dropped out of Todd Haynes’ gay detective movie co-starring Danny Ramirez.
Sources told me recently that Phoenix dropped out of the film just a handful of days before production was meant to begin, putting the entire production and film in peril.

Todd Haynes’ untitled detective movie about two men in love and fleeing to Mexico is now on hold after star and co-writer Joaquin Phoenix pulled out of the project days before production began.
Phoenix developed the screenplay for the intense gay romance with Haynes and Jon Raymond, a frequent collaborator of Haynes’ friend Kelly Reichardt (“Wendy and Lucy”). Raymond co-wrote the teleplay for Haynes’ HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce.”
Sources tell IndieWire that Phoenix, who was set to star in the explicit gay love story, dropped out of the Killer Films production five days before filming was set to start in Guadalajara, near the Southwestern coast of Mexico in the state of Jalisco. Phoenix dropped out of the project while in Los Angeles before the Mexico shoot began.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is obviously out in the world; it’s grossed $900 million-something so far and is projected to surpass the coveted $1 billion mark this weekend with a total that could end around $1.3-$1.4 billion, depending on its box office legs. And yes, as you’ve heard or seen from various leaks all over social media—plus official reveals from Ryan Reynolds’ on his social channels, who basically unveiled every cameo and who was starring in the role—the film is filled with surprise guests (not to mention Marvel released a new TV spot yesterday that revealed all the cameos which you can see below).

Peter Jackson‘s “Lord Of The Rings” trilogy may be a modern classic, but that doesn’t mean it was easy to make. Nor was it easy to act in, as Cate Blanchett revealed her pay for playing Galadriel was so miniscule she “basically got free sandwiches.”
