Ruth Westheimer, who brought frank talk about sex into America’s living rooms for the first time as radio and television talk show host Dr. Ruth, has died. She was 96.
Westheimer died on Friday at her home in New York City, a spokesperson told the New York Times.
The diminutive educator with a thick German accent was known for dispensing explicit, down-to-earth advice on matters that weren’t previously discussed on-air.
Westheimer hosted at least five shows on Lifetime and other cable stations from 1984 to 1993, and wrote dozens of books on sex.
The college professor was already in her 50s when she started her radio show on New York radio station Wyny in 1980. She later said that being middle-aged probably helped her be accepted as an expert rather than a sex object, as discussing erotic pleasure was largely taboo on radio and television before her show.

Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing is not bare on all-stars. This season Discovery Channel’s hit survival show brings 14 of the best to Africa’s punishing Munzwa Valley for more extreme challenges and cutthroat competition. The last one standing over 45 days wins $100,000 and earns 10.0 Psr (Primitive Survival Rating). The road won’t be easy with some of the most successful alums from the popular franchise challenged like never before. They arrive empty-handed and have to earn tools to use for necessities like food, water, fire, and shelter. Things heat up right from the start with an unexpected twist where a head-to-head challenge occurs on the first day. This leads to a double elimination before they even get back to camp. As seen in the exclusive clip above, adding to the high-pressure atmosphere is the fact survivalists are not allowed to share any of their tools with their fellow participants.

Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the psychologist better known as the sex therapist Dr. Ruth, has died at age 96. A spokesperson said Westheimer died Friday, July 12, at home in New York City, according to The New York Times. No cause of death has been publicized. Westheimer is survived by son Joel, daughter Miriam, and four grandchildren, the newspaper reports. Westheimer became a star in her 50s, when her Wyny radio show, Sexually Speaking, launched in New York City in 1980. The success of that program — which started as a 15-minute program but later expanded to two hours, according to The Washington Post — led to the Lifetime TV program Good Sex With Dr. Ruth Westheimer. Besides her radio and TV work, Westheimer also had books, a Playgirl column, TV commercials, and even a board game and a computer game to her name. Westheimer was born Karola Ruth Siegel on June 4, 1928, to Orthodox Jewish parents Julius and Irma Siegel.

Most people are starting to exhale now that it looks like the Paramount-Skydance sale saga is finally behind us. Those who aren’t know there’s a slim chance as part of a 45-day “go shop” window where someone else can make a bid and Shari Redstone can still change her mind and ruin everyone’s summer.
But even if Edgar Bronfman Jr. or the “Baby Geniuses” producer do come out of the woodwork, Hollywood still dodged a serious bullet: industry consolidation.
Deadline late Thursday reported that Sony and Apollo will not be a rival party making a counter offer during the go shop window. Their offer of $26 billion for the bulk of Paramount was the only other formal offer on the table. Now that’s off the table, and everyone should be able to breathe a little easy.
Under Skydance’s merger, things are no doubt going to change.

According to Bill Maher, it’s not a question of if Joe Biden will end his presidential reelection campaign but who — as in, who will replace him on the ballot. “Biden is toast,” the political commentator said on Real Time With Bill Maher on Friday, July 12. “The walls will keep crumbling, and my pick in the office pool for when he gives it up is August 9th, the 50th anniversary of when [former President Richard] Nixon did for, of course, very different reasons.” Maher also suggested possible replacements, including Vice President Kamala Harris. “She won’t just protect Plan B — she is Plan B,” the comedian said. Then there’s California Gov. Gavin Newsom: “I don’t want to say he really, really wants to be the guy who steps in if the current nominee goes down, but he gets an alert on his phone every time Biden can’t think of a word.

Is Jeopardy! pulling a fast one with some unstated new answer expectations? Some fans seem to think so after Friday’s (July 12) episode. The episode saw Isaac Hirsch face a new set of competitors — chemistry professor Mike Ferguson and attorney Ashley Weaver — and notch his eighth consecutive victory with $34,001 added to his winnings for an 8-day total of $195,389. A point of controversy arose during the episode’s Double Jeopardy round regarding the “First Ladies” category. In response to Weaver being deemed wrong for not including Ida McKinley’s first name in an answer, one fan wrote on Reddit, “Ok, so apparently now they’re requiring first names for First Ladies?” The commenter then referenced a previous complaint about the same issue, which included pointing out several instances where the same category did not require the use of the first name, including a game in 2022 and another in 2018. In the latter,...

The case against Alec Baldwin has officially been dismissed in his involuntary manslaughter trial. The actor reportedly broke down in tears on Friday (July 12) when Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer agreed with his defense team that prosecutors in the case improperly handled evidence and dismissed the charges against him and thus, the judge had to grant their motion for mistrial. Baldwin faced charges of involuntary manslaughter over the accidental shooting death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021. However, his attorneys argued that the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office improperly declined to enter the live rounds of ammunition they obtained into evidence or inform the defense that they had such evidence. “There is no way for the court to right this wrong,” the judge said, per NBC News. “The sanction of dismissal is the only remedy.” Per NBC, the sheriff’s office’s crime scene technician argued at trial that...

The involuntary manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin stemming from a fatal shooting incident on the set of the film Rust has been dismissed after the judge ruled that prosecutors withheld key evidence from Baldwin’s defense team.
The decision came down Friday, after Baldwin’s trial initially got underway on July 10. Had Baldwin been found guilty, he would have faced up to 18 months in prison.

A very happy “Shark Week” to all who celebrate! It’s wild that this marquee Discovery summer event seems to increase in size every year, spawning a massive 21 separate programs for its 2024 slate — which is, naturally, hosted by John Cena. This got the IndieWire Craft team thinking about how documentarians capture footage of nature’s most infamous cartilaginous fish, so we reached out to some “Shark Week” cinematographers with the same questions we ask both documentary and scripted DPs about how they craft the look of their projects.
You likely won’t be surprised to learn that the logistical constraints of getting up close to sharks are numerous and inform what these DPs arm themselves with, camera-wise. The edgy period piece blends modern rock music into this royal tale about the powerful French ruler, but Morton decidedly did not pull inspiration from any modern-day political figures for her performance. “Absolutely not. Categorically not,” Morton tells TV Insider. But there is a through-line between her character and our world today, she notes. “What is important though is, even though the show is a costume drama, it’s based on some facts in history. And so I think when we watch these shows, we have to look...

That any television show ever gets a first season is a bit of a miracle, and subsequent seasons even more so these days. That something as wildly fun and original as “We Are Lady Parts,” chronicling the (sadly fictional) adventures of London’s premier all-female Muslim punk band, has now gotten a second season at Peacock feels like creator Nida Manzoor pulled off a heist. And it feels that way not least because Manzoor was able to use what she learned from her collaborators on Season 1 and create set pieces that let them flex different muscles in Season 2.
It’s not hard to spot how “We Are Lady Parts” expanded its world and our view of its characters in Season 2, from giving the hard-nosed Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) big goofy comedic moments to putting ultimate girl-next-door Amina (Anjana Vasan) at the center of a love triangle. But one of the...

Another epic tennis showdown will take place on the Centre Court grass at Wimbledon. Reigning Wimbledon gentlemen’s champion Carlos Alcaraz (pictured above) will get the opportunity to hold onto his title after advancing to the final by defeating Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz, the 2024 French Open champion and No. 3 seed at Wimbledon, aims to win his second Grand Slam of the year. Alcaraz will face a tough test in Serbian great Novak Djokovic, the No. 2 seed who reached the final with a victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. Djokovic seeks his eighth Wimbledon title and to extend his record Grand Slam win total to 25. Djokovic leads Alcaraz 3-2 in head-to-head matches since 2022. The gentlemen’s final match is Sunday, July 14, at 9a/8a c on ESPN/ESPN+. On the ladies’ side, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini is playing in her second straight Grand Slam final after losing to Iga Świątek in the French Open last month.

Audiences get to see three sports for the price of one during the Summer Olympics‘ triathlon events. The three-part race features a .93-mile swim, a 25-mile cycle leg, and, finally, a 6.2 mile run to the finish line. And then for mixed team relay challenges, the swim becomes 330 yards, while the cycling portion is five miles for each athlete, and a 1.2-mile run. The men’s and women’s individual portions of the triathlon competition will take place separately from the mixed team relay event, so if you want to know where and when to tune in for both, here’s a handy guide. (All times Eastern.) Talk about corporate synergy: A membership to Hallmark Media’s new streaming-video service, Hallmark+ (another plus!), will come with free greeting cards.
The replacement to Hallmark Movies Now will have a higher price tag for its mid-September launch — $7.99 per month vs. $5.99 — but it will also have more content and more perks. Hallmark+ will have hundreds of Hallmark holiday films, but also reality shows and docuseries, the company announced Thursday at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour.
“We’re always looking for new ways to expand our content and grow our audiences while staying true to the Hallmark brand that people know and love,” said Lisa Hamilton Daly, the EVP of programming for Hallmark Media. “Our unscripted slate is inspiring, heartwarming, and entertaining, with a fresh authenticity so true to Hallmark’s DNA.”

With the “Presumed Innocent” finale set to stream on July 24, Apple is letting fans know that there’s more to look forward to.
David E. Kelley’s limited series, itself an adaptation of Scott Turow’s novel of the same name that also inspired the 1990 film, has been renewed for a second season on Apple TV+. Kelley, Turow, J.J. Abrams, Dustin Thomason, and Jake Gyllenhaal are all set to return as executive producers. However, Season 2 will be centered around an entirely new case, so it’s unclear if Gyllenhaal or co-stars Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, or Peter Sarsgaard will return in an on-screen capacity.
The eight episode first season sees Gyllenhaal step into the role of Rusty Sabich (first played by Harrison Ford in Alan J. Pakula’s film), a prosecutor who becomes a prime suspect in his co-worker’s murder after their affair becomes public knowledge. While the show...

The adult animation boom seen over the last few decades has produced some of modern television’s most exciting series. “BoJack Horseman,” “Archer,” “Primal,” “Rick and Morty,“ “Tuca & Bertie,” “Blue Eye Samurai,” and even “X-Men ’97” (just to name a few) all used their limitless medium to push serialized storytelling in new directions. But peak TV also created a slew of exhausting, unimaginative copycats — cheap knockoffs of popular and/or innovative shows that operated under the principle that all they had to do to get laughs was make cartoon characters curse about pop culture. Blame “South Park” for amplifying the shock value of “Kids Say the Darnedest Things” or “Family Guy” for tricking a generation of teens into thinking random movie references were the pinnacle of comedy writing. Either way, you end up here, with a bunch of aimless animated programs served up to subscribers whenever they finish bingeing “American Dad.
