The season is slated to begin on October 22, but the court schedule agreed to by both parties suggests the case could drag on past that date.
The NBA and Warner Bros. Discovery were in court this week, and have agreed to a briefing schedule in Wbdâs lawsuit against the league over whether or not it fully matched an offer from Amazon for a package of national TV rights. As it stands, the case is virtually guaranteed to continue through October, and it may not wrap up before the 2024-25 NBA season begins on Oct. 22, meaning that the two sides could be actively opposing each other in court while TNT is airing NBA games.
Key Details: The NBA is expected to ask for a dismissal of the lawsuit, but that process will take several weeks. If the NBAâs motion to dismiss is denied, the case will almost certainly bleed over into the NBA season.

Quinta Brunson is turning her attention to the movies and will produce, co-write, and star in a comedy feature for Universal called âPar for the Courseâ that will see the âAbbott Elementaryâ star act alongside Stephanie Hsu.
While this isnât Brunsonâs first film acting role, its her first screenplay and major starring role. Sheâll be writing the script alongside Justin Tan, who is also a writer on âAbbott Elementary,â and Tan will direct the film as his feature directorial debut.
Seth Rogenâs Point Grey Pictures will also produce the comedy alongside Brunson, and itâs a mini reunion between the two after Brunson had a part in Rogenâs âAn American Pickle.â Alex McAtee is set to produce on behalf of Point Grey under its first-look deal with Universal Pictures. This January, âPasswordâ presenter Keke Palmer broke new ground as the first Black woman to ever win an Emmy for hosting a game show. As the 30-year-old faces the challenge of defending her crown at Septemberâs Creative Arts ceremony, she has the potential to make history once again as her categoryâs all-time youngest two-time champion.
The current Best Game Show Host lineup almost perfectly matches last yearâs, with the only difference being the inclusion of Jane Lynch (âWeakest Linkâ) instead of the ineligible Mayim Bialik (âJeopardy!â). The three men filling out the remaining slots are newly solo âJeopardy!â host Ken Jennings and three-time winners Steve Harvey (âCelebrity Family Feudâ) and Pat Sajak (âWheel of Fortuneâ).
In order to determine if anyone can stop Palmer from establishing a streak, letâs take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 30 other...

Streaming ads are now nearly ubiquitous, but Amazon doesnât want to overload its customers with ads during playback.
Itâs hard to find a streaming service that doesnât offer ad-supported plans these days. Of all the major services available, only Apple TV+ does not currently have a plan with ads, and even that appears to be changing. Amazonâs streamer Prime Video introduced its ad plan at the end of January, and executives spoke about its success during Amazonâs conference call to discuss its quarterly earnings report on Thursday.
Key Details: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during the call he aims to deliver âmeaningfully fewerâ ads on Prime Video. The Streamableâs tests in January showed that Prime Video only offered two ads per episode, and none during playback. Most streamers offer four to five minutes of ads per hour, markedly fewer than are found on linear TV.

When Shatara Michelle Fordâs âDreams in Nightmaresâ premieres Thursday night at the BlackStar Film Festival, it will, like all productions, be the result of the work of many. In the case of the âTest Patternâ filmmakerâs sophomore feature, it will also be the result of the work of many people who united together behind a set of âproduction community guidelinesâ that Ford and their producers shared with the cast and crew during every step of the filmâs production.
These guidelines were originally shared in the official press notes for the film, but they were so striking, so heartening, that IndieWire is now sharing them in full below. And while one of the tenants of these guidelines holds that mistakes will be made â and Ford is quick to note that these concepts âarenât perfectâ â thereâs much here that any production could and should be inspired by.

Just this morning, NBA All-Star and Butler Bulldogs legend Gordon Hayward announced his retirement from professional basketball following a 14-year career. Heâs not going to Disneyland; Hayward is headed 32 miles northwest of that, to Hollywood.
Hayward, who first rose to national prominence with a 2010 run to the NCAA championship game and has since played for four NBA teams, is now a free agent in the truest sense of the term. And he has exclusively revealed to IndieWire that his next step is playing a more active role in his and partner Simon Hackerâs production company, Whiskey Creek. That now includes the launch of a distribution arm, as announced on Thursday, with the intent to theatrically release independent films.
âItâs hard to leave something that Iâve been doing for so long and that Iâve obviously loved. I donât think anyoneâs ever truly ready to retire from the game,...

One analyst thinks a price hike for Prime Video is all but guaranteed as it prepares to welcome the NBA.
Amazon is about to make a huge addition to its sports lineup. At least, probably. The NBA has agreed to sell a package of nationally-broadcast games to Prime Video for $1.8 billion per season over the next 11 years. A lawsuit filed by Warner Bros. Discovery to try and claw back that package for itself could throw a wrench in the plans, but if the suit fails Prime Video will take over as an NBA broadcast partner in 2025. If it does, one analyst thinks Prime Video is certain to raise prices to help it reclaim some of the revenue itâs spending to carry NBA games.
Key Details: Dan Salmon of New Street Research thinks Prime Video will raise prices in 2025. The shift to a mostly ad-supported customer base will keep prices...

The addition of free, ad-supported video content from Cineverse is just the latest evolution of Spotify.
Is there room in the streaming marketplace for another video service? Most conventional wisdom these days seems to point in the opposite direction; the onset of new streaming bundles shows that many executives think now is the time for consolidation. But Spotify looks to be moving in the opposite direction and announced on Tuesday that it would be welcoming video content from Cineverse that users of the otherwise audio platform will be able to watch.
Key Details: Titles coming to Spotify include âDog Whisperer with Caesar Milan,â comedy specials and more. The music streamer is planning to offer more premium subscription options going forward. Video related to podcasts offered on Spotify makes the most sense for the platform to import in the future. Sign Up Free cineverse.com

New data from Self Financial finds that more than 85% of paid subscriptions go unused in a given month.

Neither Dustin Hoffman nor his Tootsie character Michael Dorsey have a spotless record when it comes to women, but the former actor will be damned if he lets Alex Borstein believe that the moral of the movie is that sheâs ugly.
Back at the dawn of the MeToo movement in late 2017, seven different women hit Hoffman with sexual misconduct accusations, telling their abusive stories of Hoffman that ranged from harassment to assault. Hoffman would soon release an apology for the lightest of the allegations, and the accusations ultimately amounted to a brief dip in reputation for the actor, whose similarly controversial contemporaries Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Liam Neeson publicly jumped to his defense, claiming Hoffman to be more multifaceted than outright monstrous.
And, in fairness to the two-time Academy Award winner, there was at least one woman with aspirations in the entertainment industry whom he uplifted as opposed to degraded.

The legal dustup many expected when the NBA rejected Wbdâs matching offer for a package of broadcast rights is now officially begun.
The domino most observers were expecting to fall has toppled. Warner Bros. Discovery has officially filed a lawsuit against the NBA in New York County Supreme Court over the dispute between the two sides regarding Wbdâs right to match any third-party offer for national NBA broadcast rights. The case could have huge implications over where fans see NBA games going forward and could drag on for months.
Key Details: Wbd had matching rights written into its 2014 contract with the NBA. The company tried to match Amazonâs offer for the leagueâs new âCâ package of broadcast rights earlier this week. The NBA rejected that offer as not a true match, setting up this legal showdown. Sign Up $9.99+ / month Max.com

If Wbdâs legal options donât avail, fans will have to say goodbye to the beloved âInside the NBAâ crew.
A reality in which TNT is no longer an NBA broadcast partner is looming ever closer. On Wednesday, the league informed TNTâs parent company Warner Bros. Discovery that it was rejecting an offer to âmatchâ Amazonâs price of $1.8 billion per season for the NBAâs âCâ rights parcel. That means that unless some sort of miracle occurs, the âInside the NBAâ studio show that has become a staple of games on TNT will likely go off the air following the 2024-25 season, or at least in the form that fans know and love today. This has caused a good deal of understandable outcry from fans, but judging from ratings in the 2023-24 season, the NBAâs confidence that it can survive without âInside the NBAâ seems well-founded.

The Emmy races for Best Comedy Guest Actress and Best Comedy Guest Actor often result in massive surprises for awards pundits. Last yearâs shockeroo victories for Judith Light of âPoker Faceâ and Sam Richardson of âTed Lassoâ are just the most recent examples. But this year, if Gold Derbyâs Creative Arts predictions turn out to be accurate, there wonât be too many people with their jaws on the floor.
âThe Bearâ guest stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal currently have overwhelming leads to win their two respective races for playing Donna Berzatto and Michael Berzatto, aka the mother and brother of Jeremy Allen Whiteâs Carmen âCarmyâ Berzatto. Curtis enjoys 82/25 odds to prevail, while Bernthal is sitting pretty at 37/10 odds. Interestingly enough, both actors have submitted the episode âFishesâ for Emmy consideration â thatâs the Christmas flashback hour from Season 2 which featured countless shouting matches and emotional moments.

A new navigation bar will house a tab filled only with shows and movies that are available with your Prime Video subscription.
The Prime Video user experience has always provided one challenging aspect that many other streaming services donât force customers to deal with. As a subscription video streamer, Prime Video offers a wide range of titles that viewers are allowed to watch at no extra cost outside their monthly subscription fee. But Prime Video also carries a wide selection of shows and movies that can only be watched if a viewer rents or purchases them for an extra fee, and it can sometimes be hard to tell which is which. This week, Amazon has begun rolling out a new user interface for Prime Video to help solve that problem, an update that will also leverage artificial intelligence to help viewers find something new to watch.

In fitting Bob Newhart fashion, the legendary comic, who died this week at 94, liked to sell himself short.
In a 1986 Rolling Stone interview (conducted by future Law & Order boss Warren Leight!), Newhart referred to the secret sauce of his self-titled CBS sitcom as âBrevity. Itâs saying it in the fewest number of words, and giving the audience some credit for being intelligent and being able to figure it out.â
Referring, later in the conversation, to his seminal early routine featuring a P.R. guy chatting with an unheard Abraham Lincoln on the phone and offering unsolicited notes on the Gettysburg Address, Newhart noted: âThat Abe Lincoln routine is not funny on a piece of paper. Itâs what isnât said thatâs funny.â
The Internet â source pending â also quotes Newhart summing up his overall persona with the observation, âI am a minimalist. I like saying the most with the least.

Itâs the day after the Emmy nominations, and a few things are clear in the light of Thursday â namely, lots of deja-vu and lots of concentrating the wealth in precious few places. As is often the case with the TV academy, when they like you they really like you, and when they donât like you, they completely ignore you. Itâs good for your show to be on Netflix, FX, HBO, Apple and Hulu, less good on Paramount+ and Showtime. So much original content, so little time.
Basically, it seemed like the new blood that was welcomed into the Emmy tent on Tuesday was the direct result of replacing the old blood. âTed Lasso,â âBarryâ and âThe Marvelous Mrs. Maiselâ disappeared, and âReservation Dogsâ and âWhat We Do in the Shadowsâ suddenly appeared in a meaningful way on the comedy series radar. The league will almost quadruple its current annual revenue from its TV deals, and could make even more.
The new broadcast deal for the NBA has dominated headlines this week, but now itâs the WNBAâs turn. As first reported by The Athletic, the league has agreed to new agreements with ESPN, Amazonâs Prime Video, and NBC to broadcast its games for the next 11 years. The deals are reportedly worth $2.2 billion over the course of their contracts. This represents a massive raise for the WNBA, coming at a time when the value of womenâs sports broadcasting agreements is decidedly on the rise.
Key Details: The deal pays an average of $200 million per season. The contract allows the WNBA to sell up to two more game packages to other outlets. ESPN, Amazon, and NBC have agreed to revisit the deals if they are undervalued three years from now.

In 2018, Prime Video was the first streamer to land an Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and then repeated as winner in the top comedy category with Fleabag the following year. After cracking the Outstanding Drama Series field with a nomination for The Boys in 2021, Prime Video had a drama breakthrough this year with two series in the top category, Kilter Filmsâ Fallout, based on the Bethesda video games, and Donald Glover and Francesca Sloaneâs Mr. & Mrs. Smith, inspired by the 2005 film, which landed 16 nominations each for a 32 total.
That accounted for the majority of Prime Videoâs modest Emmy nomination haul of 37 this year, behind other major networks and streamers.

This yearâs Emmy nominations presented an opportunity for voters, freed from the velvet shackles of Succession and Ted Lasso and Better Call Saul and Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, among other legacy juggernauts.
Other than a very few returning favorites â Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, The Crown, The Bear â there were enough vacated slots for the Academy to reshape the field in whatever image they desired.
Announced on Wednesday (July 17) morning, then, the nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards represented a fairly predictable mixed bag: A few long-term wrongs were righted, some ongoing slights were maintained and the pervasive chaos of the Emmys categorization system rewarded some questionable classification choices and punished others.
Letâs start from a place of positivity.
Reservation Dogs led my Top 10 lists each of the past two years and, over its three seasons, cemented a place as one of the very best shows ever made.

Some things about the Emmys are predictable. Every awards observer figured that FXâs ShĆgun and The Bear would get lots of nominations today, and they did: 25 and 23, respectively, the latter a record for the comedy categories in the case of The Bear.

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but thereâs something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023âs Hollywood strikes. The NBA held the tournament in November in its inaugural season, but with Amazon set to gain exclusive rights in 2025, a move could be inevitable.
The NBAâs media negotiating team deserves a nice, long vacation after the new TV deals it was able to secure for the Association. Last week, the league finalized new national broadcasting deals with ESPN and ABC, NBC and Peacock, and Prime Video, which take effect in 2025 and will pay the NBA $76 billion over their lifetimes. The addition of Prime Video as an NBA partner means that the streamer will have to determine how to balance basketball and football for several months out of the year, as Amazon is also the exclusive distributor of national broadcasts of the NFLâs âThursday Night Football.â A new report from Sports Business Journal indicates that this could mean shifting the NBA Cup In-Season Tournament to a later date on the calendar,...

Up, Up, and Away! Truth, Justice, and The American Way. These immediately cause comic fans to conjure up one specific character, The Big Blue Boy Scout. Superman. Heralded as the one that started the superhero boom in comics way back in 1938, there have been a lot of live-action versions over the years. Last yearâs Flash movie highlighted some of the more popular ones and even one that had never actually been put on film. With James Gunn taking over the Dcu and using a new Superman film as the starting line, what can we expect from the upcoming film?

Joe Egan, who co-founded Stealers Wheel with Gerry Rafferty and co-wrote and sang on the enduring hit âStuck in the Middle with You,â died July 6. He was 77. The news was shared on the late Raffertyâs official Facebook page, but no details were provided.
âVery sad news that the other half of Stealers Wheel, Joe Egan, passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon with his nearest and dearest around him,â read the post on the page run by Raffertyâs daughter, Martha. âI will always remember him as a sweet and gentle soul. May he rest in peace.â
Egan â who originally dreamed of soccer stardom â and Rafferty met as teenagers at St. Mirinâs Academy in their hometown of Paisley, Scotland, and formed Stealers Wheel in the early 1970s. Their first two singles stiffed, but the third would become a rock and pop standard.

A wide range of actors, from Kirk Alyn to Henry Cavill, have donned the Kryptonian cape of Superman. But a large section of DC fans hail Christopher Reeve as the definitive version of the character. Despite Henry Cavillâs fame in the role, unlike Reeve, his story ended abruptly when James Gunn took over DC Studios.

Broadcast TV channels rate highly on the list, thanks to their ownership of marquee live sports rights.
The data is in, and for the fifth year in a row, every streaming service in the industry is being forced to look up at Netflix. Solutions Research Group (Srg) has just published its 17th annual âMust Keep TVâ report, which surveys viewers to determine the most in-demand TV and streaming brands available. Netflix topped the list once again, while ABC clung to the No. 2 position it has held since 2020. But there are some fascinating new entrants on the list: Pluto TV and Tubi, both of which made it into the top 20 for the first time in this yearâs report.
Key Details: Broadcast TV channels like ABC, CBS, and NBC had a heavy presence in the listâs top 10. Prime Video is the highest-ranked streaming brand other than Netflix, while Max slipped two spots.

The jury has ordered the NFL to pay nearly $5 billion in damages, but it could be a while before the league has to write that check.
The verdict is in. The NFL has been found liable for damages in the nearly decade-long NFL Sunday Ticket lawsuit, and has been ordered to pay $4.7 billion to residential customers to the out-of-market games service, as well as another $96 million to bars, restaurants and other commercial establishments. The ruling could have far-reaching implications for the leagueâs broadcasting arrangements, but thereâs also plenty of ways for the league to delay consequences from the case, or evade them entirely.
Key Details: Damages in the case will be tripled to nearly $15 billion, since itâs an antitrust suit. The league may have to allow its teams to begin making out-of-market broadcasting deals for themselves. Before any consequences take hold, the NFL can take advantage of a potentially lengthy appeals process.

For two straight seasons Selena Gomez has been nominated at the Primetime Emmys for âOnly Murders in the Building.â But for two straight seasons it hasnât been for acting. Like her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, sheâs a producer of the Hulu mystery series, so she has been a nominee for Best Comedy Series in 2022 and 2023. Thereâs a good chance sheâll make the cut again in that category in 2024. But can she break into Best Comedy Actress this time? Sheâll have to get past two beloved âSaturday Night Liveâ alums.
First, the good news. Four of last yearâs five nominees for Best Comedy Actress are absent this year. Christina Applegate (âDead to Meâ) and Rachel Brosnahan (âThe Marvelous Mrs. Maiselâ) saw their shows come to an end last season, while Natasha Lyonne (âPoker Faceâ) and Jenna Ortega (âWednesdayâ) were on hiatus this past season.

Riz Ahmed is returning to television â both in front of and behind the camera.
Amazonâs Prime Video has ordered a comedy series created by and starring Ahmed. The Oscar winner will play a struggling actor named Shah Latif, whoâs on the cusp of landing a breakthrough role when he finds himself thrust into a full-blown existential crisis and trippy conspiracy thriller all at the same time.
The Daily Show and Modern Family alum Ben Karlin will serve as co-showrunner alongside Ahmed for the currently untitled, eight-episode series. Jax Media and Amazon MGM Studios, where Ahmedâs Left Handed banner has a first-look deal, are producing.
âIâve wanted to tell this story for a long time,â Ahmed said in a statement. âItâs personal, bold and a lot of fun. It feels so good to be writing and creating it now with this incredible team.â

Forty years after the characterâs first appearance on the print pages of Action Comics, Superman made his biggest jump yet in terms of making an impact with the live-action set of four movies starring Christopher Reeve. Alongside Margot Kidder as his Lois Lane, the adaptation went on to become one of the most beloved pieces of comic book movie legacy thanks to the handling of the leads at the hands of director Richard Donner.

Decades later, a much-anticipated 21st-century reboot by Zack Snyder dropped with Henry Cavill in and as the Man of Steel. While the iteration and the directorâs subsequent installments to the Dceu suffered from a slew of issues, none became more glaring than his approach to Amy Adams as the superheroâs love interest.
