U.S. Post Office Drive-In... Houston, Texas... 1951
Granville W. Elder, acting postmaster of the Houston, Texas, Post Office, first experimented with a drive-in for customers in late 1947 to expedite the handling of Christmas mail. Set up in the Sam Houston Coliseum, the drive-in was used by thousands of Houstonians to relieve traffic congestion near the Post Office. In the 1950s, drive-ins (some seasonal) also popped up at offices in Illinois, California, & Maryland, but were never broadly embraced. Collection of U.S. Postal Service @uspsstamps
U.S. Mail Sit-Stand Truck... circa 1964
Sit-stand trucks, like the 6-cylinder, ½ ton, 1963 Studebaker shown above, were first tested in the mid-1950s. The trucks were part of the Post Office Department’s effort to motorize suburban delivery routes. The right-hand drive trucks had a folding seat so carriers could stand while driving on short runs.
