Netflix will release episodes for The Get Down in two parts instead of all at once

First time for a Netflix Original

Normally, when Netflix releases a new season of a series, all the episodes are available to stream at once. It's led to an increase in binge watching shows like House of Cards or Orange is the New Black and has become something Netflix is known for.

For the release of Baz Luhrmann's anticipated new series, The Get Down, Netflix won't be sticking to its normal release schedule. Instead, the first six episodes will be released on Aug. 12 and the remaining six episodes will be released sometime in 2017. When asked if the series would operate more as a mini-series type of event, a representative from Netflix said it was still a full series, but one that will be presented in two parts. Netflix's representative didn't respond to questions about whether it was for production reasons or if it was testing a new method of delivering episodes.

This is the first time Netflix has separated the release of an original series. Original series generally run 13 episodes, but it looks like The Get Down may only receive 12 in total. More information will become available later this summer.

The Get Down, a music-inspired series set in the Bronx during 1977, is the latest from visionary Luhrmann, best known for his work on Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby. Netflix just released a new teaser for his series, which stars Giancarlo Esposito, Jaden Smith and an entire cast of fresh actors, and that can be seen above.
