What to Know

Critics Consensus

Brightened up by Rashida Jones' sly comedic timing, Sunny is a melancholy sci-fi series that positively glows.

David Opie Empire Magazine Rashida Jones gives a career-best performance in this strange yet moving series that pushes back against the algorithm by pulling us to and fro in surprising, unpredictable ways. Rated: 4/5 Jul 16, 2024 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine If viewers come back for Season 2, it will be thanks to the characters, not the cliffhangers. Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya Autostraddle Sunny feels less like a warning of the dangers of AI and more like another effort to normalize it. As a grief drama and character study, it’s thrilling. As a tech dystopia, it’s murky. Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL [Sunny] is both sort of watchable, mainly due to its Japanese setting, and sort of a missed opportunity. Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Charles Pulliam-Moore The Verge While few of Sunny’s twists and turns are entirely novel, the show’s commitment to making its world feel like a plausible vision of a future where people’s gadgets work to address their needs is fantastic. Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Emily Maskell W Magazine Katie Robbins plays the long game, hiding secrets around every turn—and making Sunny one of the most standout and unmissable shows of this year. Audience Member I don’t really understand why I’m watching… whatever this is. But I keep watching it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Scott K I’m up to E6 and trying to love this show…but it’s proving to be a challenge. Somewhat slow and tedious with every character (except Sunny) being generally unlikable….especially Rashida’s character. Very marginal comedic content. But I’ll hang in there. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/07/24 Full Review Amy B It’s different, well written, and keeps me on my toes. It’s a good story with great actors and I like that each week I’m left wondering what will happen next. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Jason B The things that I found good were: the duration of each episode, the robot is awesome and Rashida was a good choice for the lead role. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Jamie P As a resident of Japan, I was looking forward to this show but as with all other Japanese-based shows made by Western networks, the characters are very unJapanese in their delivery and behaviour. Japanese don't act the way these actors are forced into doing - the writers should solicit the input of the actors to make these shows more engaging. The lead character's behaviour is extremely boorish, particularly for a Japanese context. These problems distract from me being able to enjoy the show. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Cindy M I am enjoying Sunny so far because of Rashida Jones, not the plot, the setting, or the most annoying voice for a robot ever conceived. IF the plot doesn't continue to devolve into nonsense, red herrings, and more utterly illogical and implausible plot turns, we'll stick with it. But writers need to beware of going off the rails and losing what makes this series good-Rashida Jones lost her family, is grieving and hoping they are alive. Stay with that and calm the robot perkiness down and you've got a hit here. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
