This is pretty common among video-centric sites such as Daily Motion and Complex, Digiday writes, pointing to estimates that say as much as 15 percent of the traffic sent to this type of publisher is from misdirected porn-related searches.

This isn't news to Funny Or Die, which stands by the practice in spite of its obvious disingenuousness. “It’s not a strategy to optimize for those terms; those pages are created automatically,” Funny Or Die COO and general manager Mitch Galbraith told Digiday.

With all the competition out there for porn search terms, it's quite a feat that Funny Or Die has managed to be on top of the pile due to its site's incredibly search-engine-optimized architecture. The motivation behind these sexy pages is to get more impressions for advertisers, of course; and given the nature of online ad networks, brands such as Velveeta, Home Depot, and Abilify likely have no idea that their messages are being served up on a page titled "date rape." But hey, maybe the lustful "date rape videos" searcher will decide he or she is actually in the mood for a humorous editorial about KFC's "Double Down" sandwich.
