Established in 1948, The Award Winning Gumbo Shop features a wide range of New Orleans cuisine at its finest. Enjoy fantastic customer service and great food. Patrons are also welcome to order from our full wine list including 30 Wines by the Glass.Gumbo Shop is located at 630 St. Peters Street, 1/2 block from Jackson Square in the French Quarter. As the name implies, gumbo is a fixture on the menu, but our menu also features Creole and Cajun inspired dishes that represent New Orleans' truly unique cuisine. Gumbo Shop was founded in 1948 in a former French Quarter home built in the late 1700's. The building represents a typical French Quarter layout with central courtyard and former kitchen in the rear. For the past 20 consecutive years, Gumbo Shop has received the "Best of New Orleans" best place to eat gumbo from Gambit, a local publication that relies on reader polls to determine the winners in all categories.

Q:
I'm curious if this place has any jumbalaya options that are NOT pork-based? I'm good with poultry and seafood, but pig-stuff is a no-no. Can go with creole or etouffee' as Plan B, but would love some other options as well (maybe gator-based)?

Q:
Are there any gumbo options for vegetarians? We eat eggs and dairy, just no meat. I am curious about the GUMBO Z'HERBES.
A:
They have many vegetarian options and as a vegetarian who's eaten there it's really really good please see my review

Our hotel suggested we go here for dinner and I'm so glad we listened. New Orleans can be overwhelming with a 6 month old and 2 year old and this was the perfect place to stop and reset.
The restaurant is not huge, they have a small bar and a lot of servers! (At least while we were there) This made for fast and attentive service. We just finished a 9 day road trip and this food was my husband's absolute favorite.
I got the soup special (or bisque I can't remember) it was something along the lines of corn crab and crawfish. It was creamy and DELICIOUS. My husband got some gumbo to start off and it was also great.
For dinner I got the Crawfish Penne Pasta and it was so good I hope to try to make this dish at home again someday. It was the perfect amount of spice for this low spice liking gal. My husband got a trio with étouffée jambalaya and creole and he was in hog heaven.
Overall, great experience, would definitely come back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Dana F.Griffin, GA35715Jun 29, 2024
Love NOLA. Food is incredible-except here. Waitress brought us stale bread for table. Most exciting option was butter for bread! Spinach artichoke dip was quite possibly from a can ( not sure if that is a thing but it tasted and looked so bad!). Took waitress' recommendation for Étouffée. Holy cow it was bland and had so much filé that is was like gelatin. She sold us on BBQ shrimp special. Ha- it was grilled shrimp with old blackened seasoning. Fish bites were grilled tilapia with lots of seasoning. Had a decent sauce to add at least some flavor. Finally. It's a gumbo shop. So had to try gumbo. My party of four shared a cup. We all got a taste and all were disappointed. Weak. Old. Bland.
Is this a famous place or something? Maybe it's nostalgic?
We left and went to another restaurant.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - 2895911724Jun 24, 2024
The shrimp Creole is some of the best I have ever had.
Their bread is made fresh daily. Amazing to soak all the sauces up.
One of the best daiquiris in the French Quarter. Made to order with fresh fruit.
Great customer service. Angel at the bar was amazing all three times we came in! Our grandson kept asking for a virgin daiquiri all weekend. So yummy!Helpful 4Thanks 1Love this 7Oh no 0 - 194284535Aug 10, 20242 check-ins
Service was nice. Food is good but didn't really have the OMG pop of flavor I was looking for. The blackened catfish nuggets were good and the orange marmalade creole dipping sauce was really delicious. The strawberry daiquiri didn't really have a strawberry flavor to it, I wouldn't order it again. The red beans and rice was good, seafood gumbo was okay, I only got 1 bite of crab and the rest was sausage. Jambalaya was okay, lacking flavor.

Recommended to me and ran into Gumbo Shop whilst exploring the French Quarter. Ashley was my server and very sweet! I had one request: I wanted to try 3 different items on the menu. So she arranged a sampler with the Seafood Okra Gumbo, Chicken Andouille Gumbo, and the Crawfish Étouffée. All three were really good! My favorite in order was the chicken gumbo, then crawfish etouffee, then seafood gumbo. The chicken had the most flavor but again, ALL were really good!
Seating is cafe style, casual interior and a little tight for bigger parties. However, no complaints.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 10, 2024
We wanted the gumbo to make us scream from the rafters above. It was mediocre gumbo to say the least. There was an option of Seafood gumbo with Okra; Chicken andouille sausage gumbo, duck or vegan gumbo. We played it safe by going the traditional route with two Seafood gumbo and Chicken gumbo options. It was not super great or bad - just thick soup. We also ordered the Jambalaya which was flavorful but dry. Maybe it was reheated from earlier in the day? Lastly, we had an order of Blackened chicken with mashed potatoes and Smothered turn-up greens. Overall the food didn't taste fresh but it was presented as described on the menu. The complimentary, "fresh" french bread was not fresh, it was tough and almost hurt my tooth biting it. Needless to say, this would not be my first Louisiana cuisine recommendation for a friend. If you are looking for an authentic, southern Gumbo experience, keep moving.

Loved eating here in New Orleans. Josh, our server, was hilarious and really made our dining experience special.
The food was really good- my favorite was the praline sundae at the end! Their pecan pie was also delicious.
Overall, this is a cute spot, great service, and good tasting food!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 18158497May 18, 2024
First sit down restaurant we visited in New Orleans. We wanted to go somewhere easy and not too crowded near where we were staying. It was about 6pm on a Tuesday and it wasnt too busy. Outside dining was full so we sat inside, better option if you cabt stand the humidity or heat. It is a bit louder inside though.
We ordered:
Creole Combination Platter (worth it if you want to try a little of everything) which had the Shrimp Creole (meh), Jambalaya (bomb), and Red Beans and Rice (solid)
Chicken Andouille Gumbo: BOMB, if i was going to get just an entre again, it would be this. Our waiter said this was his fav dish and recommends it to everyone. I liked this more than the exact dish given at Commanders Place.
Crawfish Etouffee: im 50/50 on it. It def was third best tasting dish out of the 5 we tried. I liked the dish alot better when I added their garlic hot sauce to it.
Bread Pudding with Whisky Sauce: a little too sweet for my palette. Would be great with maybe a latte or whipped cream?
Mint Julep: bomb. Get it. Not too sweet ;)
Our server was friendly and had alot of suggestions.Helpful 2Thanks 2Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 15, 2024
The Gumbo Shop is in the heart of the French Quarter and extremely popular. A lot of overly popular places have disappointed me for a variety of reasons.
I would say the food here was good, but it could've been hotter. The drinks were on point...thank you bartender.
I'd recommend ordering the sampler, get a cup of
Gumbo and a drink and call it a day. The service is very good and defines southern hospitality. It's a good feel inside, nothing fancy, crowded and nosey.
Oh yeah and Brady pudding is always something that sounds good...it was a disappointment.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0
