Haven't had too many smash burgers before but this one was SO GOOOOD! I was at the farmers market in outer sunset when my friend and I smelled the burgers from down the block. Very soon we found ourselves at the end of a line quite long but seemed to be moving rather quickly. The workers were really efficient in taking orders, making drinks, and one person manning the grills. It seems like their menu is generally the same with one burger and several ways about it, with the drinks swapped in and out in rotation; in this week's rotation we ordered a set which included:
strawberry lemonade (5/5): Today was one of the warmest sunny says in SF, so this definitely hit the spot. Super refreshing and it did not taste artificial at all; we both were really satisfied with this one
maillards double (5/5!!!): BOY was this a good one! super tender patties, almost medium rare, just barely cooked all the way, drenched in sauce, the cheese, and topped with a few pickles. I can confidently say this was one of the best artisan burgers (think non-in n out type of deal), I've ever had.
fries (3/5): I personally wasn't too big a fan of their fries. I think someone said it is cooked in the beef fat which definitely gave it the depth in flavor. I like my fries thinly cut with less of that crispy stuff outside, and more potato-y. Simple on the seasoning/flavor and with just a dash of salt. I'm not sure if it was the flavor or what but these weren't my favorite. I'd also like my fries more thin and crispy. The one's we had were sort of like those at five guys, on the thicker side and less crispy.
Overall really amazing burgers and great vibes from everyone all around; would go back again!Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - 506392241Aug 10, 20241 check-in
Whoa. This place has good burgers AND fries.
Double burger: Had half a burger and that was enough grease to feel the grease coat the back of my throat!
Fries: Wow deliciously fried and stayed crunchy throughout the meal. Not soggy or wet!
Pricey, had a longer wait (30 min in line, 15 to wait for food after paying) than all the other food stalls.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alexis W.San Francisco, CA11539Aug 7, 2024
We ordered the Maillard double with fries and Maillard sauce on the side. Last time we ordered the spicy Maillard but preferred the regular.
The line was long, it extended several booths down, and took a total of 1 hour from standing in line to getting our food. This is my favorite place to get a burger. The edges of the patty get nice and crispy. The combination of onions, pickles, meat, and cheese on a potato bun is just chefs kiss. The fries are perfect and heavily seasoned with salt -- I might argue that it was a touch too salty. You should give this place a try, I think it's worth waiting in line for!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jonathan L.San Francisco, CA19242205Jul 28, 20241 check-in
Went here during the Sunset Farmer's Market in front of Saint Ignatius. Wonderful burgers, and even better fries!
Big portions, so consider bringing a friend to split with. Service was what you would expect from a food truck. The farmers market makes a nice backdrop to the munch on burgers on.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 7, 2024
The best smash burger! Love coming to the farmers market and picking up a bite. I always get the double and split the fries and drink with my husband.
The line is always about 30 minutes unless you come right when they open to when they sell out. And waiting for your food could be another 15 minutes, so prepare accordingly but definitely worth the try!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 17, 2024
Two crispy yet tender patties, melted cheese, grilled shallots, home made pickles, delicious special sauce, all packed in a light potato roll :)
We've been trying to get Maillards for a few weeks and finally got it at the Outer Sunset farmers market this Sunday. The grilled shallots smell helped us quickly find the pop-up tent and even though line looked a bit long, it definitely went by quickly!
Highly recommend for everyone to get "the box" for $18. You get a maillards double + fries + drink + one sauce
Go go go!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - 2603568Jul 5, 2024
Best burgers in San Francisco, hands down! My new favorite Sunday ritual is visiting Maillard's at the Sunset Mercantile Farmers Market in the Outer Sunset. The burgers are absolutely delicious, well made with quality ingredients, and have flavors in it that are to die for.
They also now serve breakfast sandwiches all day while open at the farmers market and have new spicy sandwiches as well. The fries are also very good and worth getting!
As of right now, I don't believe they have any vegan or vegetarian options due to fries being cooked in animal fat, and not offering veggie patties.
The service is also incredibly kind and quick. I've seen them be really supportive of other vendors at the market when their canopy tent was blowing down, and also have caught them sharing food with other vendors. Just really seems like a great group of people running an up and coming business. Would love to see them open a storefront in the future!
I'd also recommend following their Instagram @maillards.sf as they have other random pop-ups from time to time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 2044643799Jun 23, 20242 check-ins
Finding maillards at the farmers market is easy, just look for the line stretching around the tent with smoke emanating from the burgers being cooked on the grill. This isn't a line that looks long and moves fast. It will take at least 30 minutes to order and 15-20 minutes to get your food.
The menu is real simple: single smash, double smash or spicy double smash. I opted for the double smash burger. The burger itself is good and the bread is nice and soft. It isn't very spicy which was a bit disappointing and I didn't get much taste from the charring of the burger. Overall, a good burger and I'm glad I gave it a try. Just as a reference point it's a little bit better than a shake shack burger. Unlikely to have again unless the line starts to get smaller or the cooking time becomes more efficient.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 28, 2024
I planned on having at least one burger while I was in San Francisco and decided to go with Maillards. Maillards is a smashburger pop-up shop. What convinced me to go was the great article written by Nico Madrigal-Yankowski of SFGATE. Long story short, chef/owner, Max Ponzurick, was once a college baseball player. He ended up choosing a career in food over baseball, and now Maillards pops up at Max's brother's restaurant, Heritage Restaurant & Bar, every Tuesday evening. I recommend reading the article, if you have interest.
The burger was mouth-watering. I'm sure it would've been good without the Maillard sauce on it, but that really took it to the next level. Maillards notably uses shallots instead of onions on their smash burger. The fries were decent, but quickly became addictive after dipping them into the Maillard sauce. There are two other sauce options: the homemade buttermilk ranch and the smoked jalapeño aioli. The ranch was pretty good, but the jalapeño aioli was a little too spicy for me. If you reside in San Francisco, Maillards is a must try.
P.S. Maillards announced last night (5/27/24) that a fried chicken sandwich has been added to the menu.Helpful 10Thanks 2Love this 5Oh no 0 - May 22, 2024
Probably one of the best smash burger I've had in California! Perfectly cooked seasoned burger with high quality meat. I would wait at the farmers market every weekend if I could. Beware: the lines can be daunting! If you get there too late, they run out of patties. So my advice, get there before 11am and have patience.
They also do pop ups in the sunset too. I recommend checking out the spicy version of the burger. If you don't mind waiting, head to the outer sunset farmers market and check them out.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
