Nothing but my best praises for the folks at Precision Auto Repair. The owner John is honest, knowledgeable, and very thorough. My car broke down nearby with transmission problems -- not good. I drove (barely) it to the nearest auto repair shop, Precision, not having any prior relationship with them or knowing if they are trustworthy. John greeted me and offered to keep my car overnight because it was late in the day. He called me the next morning after a thorough inspection with information about my options, which includes exact costs for new vs. rebuilt transmissions. He answered all of my questions patiently, honestly, and even gave me some good sound advice. When I have decided to pass on the repairs and buy a new car, John gave me information on reputable charitable locations to think about donating to, and kind to keep my car in the shop for the entire next day. When I offered to pay him for his labor/time, he did not charge me a cent. It is comforting to meet decent people such as John and the members of his team in this day and age. I don't know much about cars, but I know people, and these guys are some of the good ones.

We love Precision Auto!!! An established and friendly local business, who clearly operate with integrity and competence, as evidenced by the fact that we got referred to them by a friend who is a satisfied customer. They fixed the issue quickly, offered us a fair price, came in under the estimate and under the price quoted by Auto repair shops from the big chains, and were super easy to communicate with and even provided us with reassurance that old car still has much life in it. Moreover, when we had separate car issue that was not in their expertise, they provided us with a referral to another local business that was just as awesome.

John runs an excellent shop. Service is always friendly, prompt and professional. I've never been upsold on a service I didn't need. Prices are always competitive. I've been getting my ol' Honda worked on here for a year and a half now and very lucky to have such a reliable service depot in the area.

Today was my third time bringing my car to Precision.
First time was for an oil change and replacement of both front struts, in February.
Second time was in July, for an oil change and safety check before a big road trip.
Today was because I'd started hearing clicking sounds in my front end.
Before the drop-off, I made the mistake of Googling and found so much alarming information online that I was actually considering whether I should buy a newer car (mine is 15 years old). Steering column? Suspension? CV joints? Is it time to move on and stop putting money into this car?
Then John texted me in the afternoon to let me know that one of the struts from February was the cause and they had replaced it under warranty. I'm embarrassed to confess that I hadn't asked about a warranty 7 months earlier so I was surprised.
They could have blamed the clicking on any number of other things. How would I - an automotive dunce who relies on Google - ever even know?

I started planning trips to Los Angeles around my car maintenance so that I could visit my family's mechanic. It was a comfort to have a trusted shop there, but what if I had an urgent need? I still had to establish a new relationship here.
Fast forward to this week. It was time for an oil change so I thought it would be a good opportunity to visit Precision. I'd already had a positive experience with Giacomo (I hope I'm spelling his name correctly) last fall when I called for advice and a quote on a repair I was considering.
When I called on Tuesday to make an appointment, Giacomo remembered me from our September phone call! I was amazed because I know he must talk to dozens of people a week. That told me that he views his customers as people and that he cares about helping them. It gave me a really good feeling about taking my car there.
I did the drop-off yesterday and requested the oil change plus an overall safety inspection plus recommendations for proactive work, since I'm creeping up on 150K.
John from the shop called me later in the morning. He let me know that there were some minor things that just come with the age of the car and that aren't worth worrying about right now, which aligns with what my family's mechanic told me last year.
John also mentioned that I might want to consider replacing the front struts. He said that they typically have a maximum lifespan of about 100K, and that rather than suddenly going out, they lose effectiveness slowly over time. He explained that since I drive the car often I probably hadn't detected the gradual decline but that I must have been noticing that the car bottoms out and that the front end hangs low.
As he spoke, I flashed to all the times I've gritted my teeth as I go in and out of driveways, and because of how crappy our roads are here. Maybe it's a combination of crappy roads AND crappy struts?
The quote felt reasonable so I asked him to proceed and I'm very glad I did. I noticed a difference as soon as I got in the car. I was sitting noticeably higher! Then as I drove home I realized I wasn't wincing over every crack or bump in the asphalt. Driving felt fresh and firm, if that makes any sense. The car handled differently overall in a way that's hard for me as a layperson to explain.
Another thing I really liked was that John dedicated time to giving me context, examples, and information. He spent as much time as was needed for me to understand the repair and what I could expect from it.
I hope to update this review as the relationship progresses because I feel hopeful that I've found my new place where I can rely on good service and reasonable rates. - louie ..San Lorenzo, CA01Apr 24, 2024
My break light went out. Made an appt but was turned away when I called back to say that my trunk lock won't open. John sounded annoyed that how come I didn't disclose that. I didn't understand the problem because I called back as soon as I realized it and my car is not at the shop yet. John said he would not want his mechanics dirtying my interior, crawling inside my car. It means it can be done, but they maybe don't want to do the extra work. I don't even mind paying extra for that. Even questioned me how come I have not gotten around fixing the trunk lock. Caught me off guard. Not really his business. He was rude and grumpy. Disappointing. Unreliable shop. I called another shop and they were more than happy to help. More power to your business :) Lol
