There is something special about breakfast. It's the one meal that I cannot make nearly as good as most dedicated breakfast places can. I don't know if their eggs are fresher than the ones I get, or if I am just not as good of a cook as I think I am. Either way, I love going eat breakfast at a restaurant because they just do it better.
One morning I was was craving shrimp and grits. I happened to be in the neighborhood for work and searched yelp and that's how I found Ruby Slipper. It seemed most of my friends loved the place so off I went.
The first thing I noticed was how popular a restaurant it was. Street parking was scarce and there was a short wait for a table. This was on a weekday too so I could imagine weekends are even more crowded.
The server seemed rushed and service was somewhat impersonal. The dining area was also a bit cramped. If you intend on having a private conversation, good luck.
Since I was craving it, I ordered shrimp and grits. I was very disappointed with their version. The shrimp were properly cooked, but lacked the bold flavor I was expecting. The grits actually seemed to have more flavor than the shrimp.
Would I return to Ruby Slipper? Probably so, but I will order something else next timeHelpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Tobice T.Douglasville, GA01Jul 20, 2024

First of all do not be dissuaded if at first you cannot find the entrance to this clever venue for breakfast/brunch on Broad Street. On a Sunday morning following a windy, cold, 2024 Shamrockin Run New Orleans 5k race we were yearning for a warm spot, hot coffee and a delicious breakfast. Just know that the address of the location we visited is South Broad Street but the smart parking lot and entrance is just around the corner on Banks Street.
Ruby Slipper Cafe was a highlight of this spring's culinary expedition to New Orleans from Houston. The waitstaff provided very amicable and prompt service. Accompanying my delicious cup of coffee was the "One Tomato, Two Tomato"; a friend green tomato and a grilled red tomato served over a biscuit with two perfectly poached eggs topped with a delicious hollandaise. The fresh crisp side salad with a nice refreshing surprise.
We arrived by 9 am on a Sunday morning and had no trouble snagging a table. But by 10:30 the restaurant was filling up with tourists and locals with a wait line starting to form.
This location pays homage to its neighbors who survived and rebuilt after Katrina and the fact that the building was formerly a union hall adds to the experience. If you are a breakfast person in New Orleans, try one of the Ruby Slipper Cafe locations.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Rubber Slipper is pretty much a must-visit spot for me everytime I'm in New Orleans. This time I got the creamy vanilla spiced latte - espresso, vanilla syrup, milk and cream topped with whipped cream and nutmeg. There was a lot of whipped cream, which I would usually hate, but I went with it.
I asked the server for her pick between the biscuits and gravy and the bayou shrimp benny. Because it offered more bang for my buck, I went with the biscuits and gravy. You can get this with either pork sausage gravy or chicken sausage gravy. I opted for the pork and chose chicken sausage for my side. The meal also comes with two eggs any style. The sausage gravy was tasty. Not too peppery, like some others and the biscuits were delightful. Soft and fluffy but they stood up to the sausage gravy and were't overpowered. I also added on a fried green tomato for $1, which was just okay. I could kind of tell that the grease wasn't super fresh (it was nearing the end of the shift). My friend got the cinnamon roll pancakes, which were delicious. They literally tasted like a cinnabon and you didn't even need to add syrup.
I used to live in New Orleans, but haven't been back, or to Ruby Slipper since 2019 and I must say, it kind of felt a bit commercial. Everything was fine and the service was friendly, but it seemed as though they were kind of phoning it in. I remember coming here and it felt like a small, family operation (even if it wasn't). There seemed to be a lack of passion from everyone this visit. It was still a solid meal, but I think I could try more locally owned and operated stops next time.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

My first time here was about a year ago. It was super busy. The food was good but I was disappointed with the portions. The menu didn't seem to have changed much since that time. This time was a lot better. We were able to be seated as soon as we arrived. The staff was very accommodating. The portions were better too. We ordered beginets as a starter. They were actually very small in size. We also ordered the megas (an egg dish served over fried tortilla strips and a side of avocado slices), fried catfish and grits, shrimp and grits, a side order of chicken sausage, and a side biscuit. The biscuits are a good size but were very dry. The butter that was served with them made them better. The shrimp and grits would have been a much better presentation with several butterfly shrimp on top than the small shrimp mixed into the grits. We also had a couple of mocktails. All in all, the food was good.

we came as a group of 5 on a sunday at 8am. you can book a reservation ahead of time but it really wasnt necessary as it wasnt busy. the other location would probably be more busy tbh. the restaurant only had 3 tables taken. we were immediately sat and brought waters/menus.
F O O D
breakfast sandwich, scrambled egg, brioche, bacon, no cheese: choice of meat, egg, cheese, biscuit or brioche bun and a side
french toast bites: brioche french toast bites, fried and tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with cream cheese icing and praline sauce
trivecta: taste of ruby featuring the signature benedicts: egg cochin, chicken st charles, bayou shrimp
white choc bread pudding pancakes, sauce on side: white chocolate brat putting in cinnamon Sugar, topped with white chocolate whisky sauce.
salmon avocado toast: multigrain toast points, haas avocado, pico de gallo, hot smoked salmon, poached egg, herb creme fraiche, pickled red onions, flash fried capers and chives
everything was phenomenal. theres nothing you can go wrong with here. the sandwich, french toast bites, and avocado toast were good one person sizes for the average person to be full about 75% but if you're really hungry, i'd definitely go for the trivecta or that could be a shared item between a couple. the amount of food on that was monstrous. the white choc pudding pancakes were so tasty flavorwise but the pancakes were a little too doughy and it was extremely sweet (and this is coming from someone who eats like 800g of sugar a day lol).

Popular breakfast and brunch spot in New Orleans so I had to give it a try!
The service was quick and the staff were extremely friendly. You can opt to eat indoors or outdoors.
I got the mix and match for my bennies as there was only 2 I really wanted to try. The fried chicken one was by far my favorite. New Orleans does not disappoint when it comes to their fried chicken.
Highly recommend this spot for a breakfast or brunch and a visit for tourist.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information
