There are some gluten free items available and the chef there is terrific - so if there is something you want, I've had them adapt a few things. Depending whether it's for celiac or dietary preference, I'm the later. If celiac - give them a call,… more

How loud is it during normal dinner hours?

It's a lively spot. If you're looking for quiet and romantic, might want a different place. The room has GREAT energy.

Aptly named, Standby is still the best restaurant + cocktail bar in Detroit. Whenever I'm downtown, I'm hard pressed to choose to go elsewhere because I just honestly would prefer to be here.
The cocktails are consistently spectacular, and the rotating food menu is always enticing and delicious. I also consistently receive exceptional service. Top this off with an immaculate vibe, and you've got the makings of, well, a standby. I've come with family to celebrate birthdays, with friends to toast to a promotion, with my husband for an intimate date night, and solo when I just wanted to treat myself.
Because of the seasonal menu rotations, there is always something new and interesting to sip or bite. A constant cocktail on the menu that I highly recommend is called the Snake in the Grass. But the best cocktail I had here was called the Black Beretta and was made with clementine sherbet and black sesame - outstanding! I also love that they have a rotating "break-even bottle" - where you can get a taste of typically pricey pours of whiskey, tequila, etc. for just as much money as it costs for them to break even on the bottle.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 22, 2024
I've lived downtown Detroit a very long time.
Standby until present day is hard to get into. Today's there's a bit more flexibility on a weekday but I still recommend a reservation.
Dress up if you come or cool swag. Lights are dim and the music makes you feel better.
Drinks are yummy and beers are welcome.
The staff is lovely. Brandy is a doll. I did come alone and was treated right.
I ordered the pasta and calamari!
I love the deviled eggs. I love the carrots and honestly y'all the food is great.
Doris approved. 4.6
Only because in order the deviled eggs a lot and a few times they have been cold even tho deep fried- and still yummy. I do like them better a bit warmer also sometimes when empty the food still takes a long time to come ourt- not that I am in a rush!
Other than that- it's beautiful and I completely recommend for a date night, team thing for work, or a girls night out.
Food:
Tonight I got the calamari and the pasta.
Calamari is a good mix of pieces. Soft but deep fried. It's in a coconut spicy pineapple white sauce. It's good but I didn't finish the plate.
I also got the pasta.
The cream sauce isn't special- taste out of the can. The sage would have been better fried.
The stuffing is beautiful: really yummy and the shells would cooked al dente. Just lovely,
Great amount of food for the price. And some crunch on top.
I would recommend. I just wish the white sauce had some bite and there was just one slice of bread.
I was offered fresh silverware that matters to me: and my waitress wasn't annoying I didn't feel rushed out. She was very nice and kind to me.
Highly recommend!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 5825582744Jul 31, 20241 check-in
We had a great night cap on a busy Saturday night - the bar is open until 2 and has a fun vibe and great music. Top-notch cocktails - it's fun to sit at the bar and watch - the bartenders are cool and friendly. They made me the nicest mocktail - I told them what I like, and they made me something. Delicious and pretty - I don't usually spend $12 on a mocktail, but it's nice to sit at the bar with a pretty drink while your friends have cocktails. It's a great spot to stop on your downtown tour.

Always fantastic here- and the staff is the best- I've been coming for years and years and been through changes of chef, menu, staff, etc and somehow the high quality continues
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jul 5, 2018Previous reviewThe cocktail menu here can not be beat. If you're. A lover of invention, taste & design, this is your cocktail bar. I bring every Detroit visitor here. (Tip: get there when they open if you do not have a reservation)
The chef de cuisine has changed at least three times since I began coming here and tho no one ever matched a dish like their original king crab salad, the food is always good. On the present menu, I would recommend the shrimp and the fruit/cheese/honey plate, both for sharing.
But you are here for the cocktails and I've worked my way through half the current menu. Top choices: Snake in the grass, Tick of the clock, Montego Bae & Black Beretta. You'll notice my pattern: rum/agave/gin and I'm a fresh and mint or fruity kind o fairly. ( but withOUT sweetness). If you're a whiskey or brandy person, I can't help you. ( mostly because I can't handle that)
Come back often because just when you've found your signature drink, the menu changes.Nov 19, 2016Previous reviewAnother food/drink menu update, so another review:
First of all. I have to go back because you can't try all of the new things you desire in just one shot, but I have it a try!
Two new drinks, Yoga Girl and Pretty Woman are keepers. Yoga was the waitress suggestion so it must be popular. I went out on my own and tried the Hurache Nights, ( spelling?), because I was intrigued by the coconut milk, but it tastes a little bit like sunscreen. Left that one but I'd already had enough to drink anyway.
Tried the Brussel sprouts and the risotto. The Brussels are better than at most places. Everywhere in Birmingham fries them until they're greasy and annihilated, but here they are cooked just enough to be flavorful but still resemble themselves! And they have a bit of potato pieces mixed in which really balances them out
The risotto is very tasty and full of oyster mushrooms. It doesn't spread like a true risotto if that's what you're expecting, (theirs is thicker, like a sticky porridge), but still very good and filling. Will try the pierogie next time too.May 24, 2016Previous reviewreturned with my mother to treat her to everything I LOVE here: Crab salad, Fake Mustache, Je ne sais quoi... the list goes on. We dropped $120 in an hour. And Brent is also the BEST waiter here. (move over Alton)
BUT WAIT: just a few days after this visit, they announced a chef shake up and a new menu coming?!?! If the crab salad goes,... ??? We literally drove 45 minutes just to have that. I will be so sad. It is not a dish to be found elsewhere.. the components are so perfect.
Heading back in a few weeks to see what's what... praying....May 10, 2016Previous reviewNew fave spot in Detroit! Maybe in Tri-county area!
First, shout out to Alton: best waiter, service, personality, everything!
Second, MUST-TRY at Standby: King Crab salad! Another Yelper posted a much better pic than I have but it hardly describes how special this dish is.. Salad is not really appropriate... More like lump, fresh crab atop a beautiful custard/flan... I haven't had anything quite like it before.
For kicks, try the giant pineapple drink , (see pics), just to say you did it...the drink itself has a nice peppery kick from the chili vodka but at $30.00 for two, it went really really fast. (There's a regular glass inside of that pineapple vessel). Which led to my next drink order, and fave of the evening: the Vermillion Fizz.
Third, best bar snacks ever: duck fat fire almonds and gin soaked olives! Could've eaten those all night long.
Lastly, after you're a little tipsy, stop ordering drinks that come with straws because you'll keep biting down out of habit and those straws are made of metal, lol! - Apr 16, 2024
Love this place!!! Happy hour on Sunday? Wow !! Favorite place in Detroit for a drink and always great service. They have a large drink menu and give great suggestions. It's a smaller restaurant but has a decent size bar. It gets very crowded in the evenings so plan ahead.

Great drinks, food and atmosphere. The bartender made a drink to order that wasn't on the menu. The lemon spaghetti is wonderful!

Had a reservation for standby on Saturday night. We arrived at 5pm and were seated quickly. I was surprised how small it was inside, but it was a nice vibe. We ordered drinks which took awhile, but to be expected since they are specialty cocktails and everyone orders them at once when they open. We got a few apps, and some entrees for the table, some things that were good: fried deviled eggs, beet salad, kaarage
(Spelling?) , soft pretzels.
Not good: burger, flavor was lacking and fries had SOOOO much salt on them it was inedible. Coconut calamari - good but had so much chili oil ( or some kind of oil) that they were soggy.
We ordered all of our food at once, a couple things came out first, then it was almost an hour later before the rest came out. Thought it was strange, I think the waiter forgot to ring it in tbh.
Overall the trip was pricey, I wouldn't come back for food. Maybe for a drink but likely will go with other options.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Business owner information

Very Best,

I wish I took pictures. We tried most of the food menu. Arancini, fries, and chicken thighs. Lol those were the best options. I've had the burger before but not tonight and it's great. The drinks always solid! I'm a Mezcal girl. Great service! Music and ambiance was just what we needed! Music was excellent!

On Sunday, 7/21 I personally witnessed and experienced a disturbing incident of racial discrimination. It deeply concerns me that while attempting to enter your bar with my family to meet with friends, who are Black, we were blatantly denied entry by the host. Meanwhile, we noticed that several groups of White patrons were allowed inside without any issues. This discriminatory behavior is unacceptable and has no place in any modern, inclusive society.

The drinks were fantastic but the fettuccine that I ordered was awful. The fettuccine itself was just only spicy - no other flavor itself.
Ambiance was cute but service was kinda bad. Every time i needed water, I had to wait 20 minutes in between each service.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 2Business owner information

Hey Linda,
We're so glad you enjoyed the cocktails and ambience, but we're disappointed to hear that you didn't like the Fettuccine — we have relayed your comments regarding the Fettuccine to our team and have ultimately decided to remove it from our menu. We've actually switched up our menu a lot in the past few weeks!
We hope you consider visiting us again so we can offer repair. If you do decide to come again, please email us at liz@standbydetroit.com.
Sincerely,
Standby Management
