Surrey's is quickly becoming on of my favorite places in the city. I normally frequent their location in the LGD, but went to this location one morning at the suggestion of a fellow yelper.
Located in what seems to be an old house, Surrey's has a lot of charm. That charm comes at a price as seating is very limited. On the morning we visited there was a wait for inside, but there was availability on the side porch. Of course as soon as we sat down a torrential downpour began so we relocated inside and waited for a table. One of the benefits of waiting at the bar for a table is that we were seated directly next to the kitchen. That allowed me to view all of the delicious items they were preparing, and it convinced me to try something different.
Once our table was ready, I knew exactly what to order. Shrimp and grits is a very popular dish that took me a long time to jump on the bandwagon. I didn't understand those two foods going together until I had BBQ shrimp and grits and was totally hooked. Surrey's version is a BBQ shrimp and grits, and was absolutely amazing. The grits were creamy and perfect with perfectly cooked shrimp in that oh so heavenly sauce. It was so good that had I been by myself, I would've licked the bowl clean. In addition to all that goodness, there were several pieces of bacon as a garnish. I cannot say enough good things about this dish.
Surrey's is an excellent place for breakfast or lunch. If you've never been, come to this location. That way I can get a table at the LGD without a wait.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - 44626199354Feb 5, 2023
I've always been a fan of the original location of Surrey's while it often does get crowded with a wait to get in. Surry's Uptown offered another option to avoid some of that crowd with their second location of Surrey's Uptown right next to Le Bon Temps Roule bar. Surry's has been a great spot for Breakfast, Lunch and Brunch and so I eventually ended up checking out this second location. The menu seems to mostly be exactly like the original while the vibe doesn't seem quite as vibrant. Overall I only got to visit this second location twice before it went out of business (the original location is still going). There was news of opening another location on Freret Street near Tulane University so maybe that is still in process?
My video review of Surry's Uptown is here:

Love love this place. Just quaint. The atmosphere is relaxed with a bit of artsy Barsy appeal with all the great art from locals on the wall. The service is amazing and the food...... oh the food. I had the lump crap omelet and talk about amazing taste... I always get the massive banana pancake just because I can and it's so so good. Love the outdoor seating as well. Just a well rounded awesome eatery along Magazine street.
I cannot encourage enough to take the time to get out, practice safe distancing of course but support the eateries in your area or we will all starve and crave for all this great cuisine New Orleans have to offer....
Well, that's it for now.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 110256213Nov 29, 2021
I was looking to see the Tree of Life, but after getting dropped off at the park, decided I needed some sustenance first. It was around noon and would be my first meal of the day, so I was looking for something a bit breakfasty, but not basic like what I'd eat at home. I don't "brunch" very often, but after wandering around getting hungrier by the minute and finding most places closed (I DELIBERATELY passed up Starbucks because I wanted to support a local business), when I saw Surrey's menu I knew this would hit the spot. And man, did it.
Yes I walked from Audubon park to this place to eat and then back, and it was WORTH. The place is so cute and I got a little outdoor table with some English Breakfast tea to start. The staff are SO sweet and attentive and my food came FAST (quick service seems to be a trend here in NOLA!).
I got the corned beef hash that comes with eggs andouille sausage mixed with home fries, and a biscuit, with a side of sausage gravy. I REALLY wanted my brunch to be classicly southern, if you couldn't tell. And from my first bite I knew it would be hard to go back to Libby's canned corned beef hash ever again. Flavorful, hearty, and that side of rich, creamy gravy on top of the biscuit I liberally buttered? The spot was hit. The waiters and waitresses really added to the pleasantness of the experience; they were SO friendly and accommodating!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Andrew S.Washington, DC2910629Sep 17, 2023

How? How is it ten years since I've reviewed Surrey's Uptown?
So let's get into it. Surrey's has been a brunch/lunch (I don't do breakfast) staple in my life for a whole damn decade now. What has changed? For starters, they are no longer cash only! This makes my life a lot easier, I'm not going to lie. Also, they've always had decent vegetarian and a couple vegan options but now I'm convinced that there's more than ever. You can sub tofu for eggs in most breakfast dishes, by the way, so go for it and get creative.
What hasn't changed? I've never met a better breakfast potato. I had forgotten my sage words in my January 2012 review and accidentally ordered them. Well, I was brought right back to my state of wonder with one bite of these tasty spuds. Utterly outstanding. As is, my old standby which I ordered for nostalgia's sake, the tofu breakfast platter. So much tofu goodness (I love the gingerific marinade).
I will be back soon to get creative with my tofu options (maybe go for the tofu avocado pesto sandwich, also an old time fave).Helpful 23Thanks 0Love this 25Oh no 0Jan 1, 2012Previous reviewEnjoying a late brunch out on a porch in December? Pinch me, cuz surely I'm dreaming. Thank you, Surrey's and and thank you to the New Orleans weather gods...
Surrey's is the kind of place where something simple like grits is a work of culinary art. So creamy and tasty. There are a lot of brunch options for ovo lacto vegetarians, but I wanted to keep it simple and holy hell did it pay off. The side of buttery mushroom gravy can be eaten on its own. To add to the starch fest, I chose home fries. They are cut, not shredded, which was kind of a bummer but they are hella tasty so just ignore my quibble.
Strange moment: Waitress looked at me like I was absolutely insane when after she asked me for my drink order, I said, "an Americano." As in "WTF are you insane?" Is that a crazy answer? This is a breakfast joint, right? Rest of the services was good enough that this was just a small thing, though. BTW, the drip coffee is good and strong, so an Americano isn't even necessary so maybe that's the reason for her looking at me like I was batshit crazy for asking for an expresso drink. Who knows? I'm probably the only neurotic person who obsesses over these things.
No booze here. (Not such a) Pro Tip (because I'm sure you can figure this out on your own): Get a Bloody Mary to-go next door from Les Bon Temps (or better yet, Buddha Belly if you can deal with the walk, as their bloodies are the best!) and it can't get much better for a brunch experience! - Christina P.New Orleans, LA236132275Nov 30, 2021
Love love love!! This location uptown is so cute and quaint. It's picture perfect!!
Since it's off of magazine make sure you scout for parking, however it's always a good stroll.
Was hankering for something awesome and just picked out of a hat! Glad I did bcos man this was a solid choice!!
Loved the atmosphere soon as we walked up, vaxx cards please! And seated right down. The menu is so spectacular and has such a great variety was really hard to choose.
However what I did choose the housing patty plate and that definitely did NOT disappoint. So savory, so yummy it just sits in your stomach just right demanding for more!! I really can't get enough Of this place
10/10 coming back for more!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brittany S.New Orleans, LA255290735Jun 6, 2021

This place is so cute and homey. There was no wait when we arrived, friendly staff and local art work lined the walls(which is all for sale- I bought a handmade shot gun house as my trinket of NO)
The menu is pretty large, plus they offer specials! We started with the pan purde, which came first. While it was visually appealing, it wasn't my cup of tea. A little gummy in the middle. My friend enjoyed it. I ordered the shrimp and grits- ORDER THIS. It was so delicious and flavorful! Perfect size. Beyond creamy and perfectly made. A little bite of spice and a generous portion of shrimp, lined with 4 pieces of bacon. Ummm yum. It was something I'd go back to order.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
