Kim’s 5-star review: I seriously stumbled upon this wonderful mom 'n pop dive while walking to Walgreen's from my AirBnb. It's one of those places where all the old folks know each other. I came in alone and I think every person stopped by my table to find out my story...where I was visiting from and so on. Super friendly. I think the server even called me "Honey". My veggie omelette was huge and very tasty. Coffee cup was never empty. Serve gave me a to go cup of joe on the house to take with me. I would seriously make the effort to return here on my next NO visit. -
Kim’s 5-star review: I stumbled upon this little shop while walking around the neighborhood of my AirBnb. This is one of those places where you can't rush. You have to bend over, search through bins and look everywhere. Hard work will be rewarded. I searched out a beautiful garden floral motif throw pillow that looked super high quality and priced at $3. Later I found a Mackenzie-Childs tag inside...um, hello...$150 pillow. Also scored a pair of Fluevog heels for I think $10. The older guy who was working when I first walked in was so friendly. I was the only person in the store and he and I chatted like old friends for 45 minutes. I was there so long that I meet the two young people working the closing shift. Super sweet and friendly, too. If I lived closer, I'd be their best customer! -
Kim’s 4-star review: Oink..ate my first meal in NO at Fat Boy. Lobster poboy with fries and a local beer. It was near my AirBnb but also an easy walk if you're in the convention center area. Big chunks of fried lobster on a toasty roll put me right into a pleasant carb coma. I was the only customer so the guy working took the time to tell me all about the food and let me sample all the ice cream flavors. Had to stumble back and nap afterwards...but with a smile on my face. -
Kim’s 4-star review: Adorable little cottage painted bright yellow beckoned me inside on a rainy summer afternoon. Near my AirBnb and perfect a quick late lunch. Had a tasty latte and scored the last turkey sandwich. Food options are limited and forget it if you low carb/paleo. I sat near a window, watched the rain and enjoy some quiet time before heading back to the convention center. Nice place if you want coffee without the Starbucks hassle. -
Kim’s 4-star review: The name sounds like they wholesale uniforms but don't be fooled. This delightful little shop offers tempting high/low fashions. I didn't have much luck with finding any clothes in the double digit sizes but found some amazing statement necklaces and funky oxfords at good prices. Lots of unusual things and with only 1 or 2 pieces in inventory. I like funky stuff that is not mass produced. Definitely on the higher price scale but worth a visit. -
Kim’s 5-star review: Others have written much better reviews of the museum itself so I want to tell you about the super secret retro clothing shop attached to the museum. Don't miss it - on the corner of Andrew Higgins Blvd and Magazine St. The museum map refers to this wonderful find as "museum retail" but it is a treasure trove for vintage lovers. Very well priced 1940s style apparel, shoes, jewelry, books and so on. Heaven! Way in the back is a sales rack holding wonderful retro looks at discounted prices. -
Kim’s 4-star review: OMG - This is PhD level of thrifting. Think of your 95 year old granny's basement combined with your weird uncle's military collection. Bring your patience, comfy clothes and hand sanitizer to pick through this place. I spent most of my time looking through the jewelry. I found one earring in a basket on the counter and its mate in a wire bin two layers deep underneath a table. Yeah, it's that kind of place. -
Kim’s 4-star review: Old haunted bordello. Unique stay. Walking distance to convention center and hipster restaurants on Camp St. I think I was the only guest because I didn't see anyone else at breakfast, happy hour or checkin/out. It was also midweek in September, too. Lucky me because all the beer and wine at happy hour was mine mine mine. Stayed in the Red Room which you can enter through a door next to the fridge in the main kitchen. I was not happy to see that one of the approved smoking areas was right outside the Red Room window. They put an ashtray on a little bistro cafe set so people could potentially light up all day and night blowing 2nd hand smoke into your room. Ugh. It wasn't an issue because I didn't see anyone else plus I hid the ashtray.
