    Hi guys!

I just moved to New Orleans about 2 weeks ago and was wondering if the locals can share some secrets with me about fun things to do around here that won't break the bank. I live in metairie so would appreciate any suggestions!

  1. If you're outdoorsy, the Jean Lafitte National Parks (individual units) are excellent.  The Barataria unit on the westbank is 20 minutes from downtown but you're in the swamps.

Also, New Orleans Museum of Art is still doing free Wednesdays from 12-8. And their sculpture garden is always free. My last suggestion is for a $1.25 each way ride the Uptown streetcar from Carrollton & Claiborne all the way to Canal St and then back again. Best way to see the city for sure.

For free/cheap stuff from Jefferson Parish, check out the JPRD (jeffparish.net/index.cfm…); I am always amazed by the stuff they offer.  Welcome!

Wednesdays at the Square is free, but they don't want you to bring in outside food/drink...

  2. Also, check out nolafunguide.com they send out funsaver emails with discounts & deals.

For "making groceries,"  head for Dorignacs(.com). The best place in town for people watching. Here, the meat isle is a spectator sport. I used to think the folks handling the meat worked there; checking expiration dates. Not the case. They're just looking for the right price/cut. Besides, they've got nothing else to do before their stories or Price is Right comes on.

And for the record, it's pronounced "all off up in 'Metry'."

  3. Greek Fest is at the corner of Robert E. Lee & St. Bernard Ave: greekfestnola.com

Scott is totally correct about  Dorignac's I also enjoy watching the old ladies in the produce department.

  4. Wednesdays at the Square (wednesdayatthesquare.com) refers to Lafayette Square in the CBD (Central business district): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ne…

Another great free fun thing to do is ride the ferry to Algiers Point from Canal Street.  Walk around the point and then ferry back.

Everybody's had great suggestions so far!  You can also go out to Frenchmen Street pretty much any night of the week to hear awesome music, for free.  Obviously you'll have to pay for drinks, but only the Spotted Cat has a one drink minimum; otherwise you can pop in and check out the band at DBA, Apple Barrel, Maison de la Musique and other venues for free.  Sometimes you'll find places that are charging a cover, but there are always free shows on Frenchmen Street, which you can find simply by walking across the street or going next door.

Definitely check out Wednesday at the Square, the free concert series in Lafayette Square, but you'll have to wait until the 2011 season.  The concerts take place over 12 weeks in the spring, and they ended about a month ago.  However, there's a new concert series at Lafayette Square that happens in the fall, so keep an eye out for Harvest the Music.  Same location, but I believe the fall concerts are on a different day.  Possibly Thursday.

Walking around the French Quarter during the day, particularly Royal Street, is another free source of entertainment.  There are tons of art galleries and antique shops that can occupy you for days, plus there are always musicians playing outside on the streets.  If you've got a few bucks to tip them, then do it, but if not there's no reason not to enjoy the music while you're there.

City Park, the Sculpture Garden, Audubon Park and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) are all worth checking out, and won't cost you a dime.  If you're a Louisiana resident, you can go to NOMA for free, but I can't remember if it's all the time or just certain days of the week.  It's a bit hot right now for the park, so the museum is a good indoor activity.

Welcome to New Orleans!  Hope this helps.  :)

The Sculpture Gardens next to the NOLA Museum of Art. The French Quarter.
