New England transplant here - I've been craving some deep-fried sea scallops and whole fried clams (not the strips).  Is there a restaurant which would carry those items here in the Big Easy???  Thanks in advance!!  :0))

I've had fried clams as part of my seafood platter at Deanie's seafood in the Quarter. Most fried platters in town will have fried clams too.

  1. Deanie's and most other local places have fried oysters but not fried clams.  Even in New England I've mostly seen just the strips and its not easy to find whole fried clams.  Scallops appear pretty often on menus just usually not fried other than the mentioned Chinese buffet.  Clams I've only seen in chowder and fried in strips locally and sporadically.

    Vicky,

I've never been served fried clams here as part of a seafood platter. You do see scallops on the menus here, but rarely -to-never fried.

Rene, I'm with you.  Clams are a New England thing.  We're all about our oysters and some places, mostly French, serve mussels.

As a fellow Northeast transplant, I would suggest switching to fried oysters. I don't mean to be a downer, but every time I've tried a mussel, clam or scallop here they don't match up to the offerings in the Northeast. You're eating from the Gulf, enjoy all the delicious fish choices here!

Bobby b where did you find full size fried scallops? Now the one that are mini size yeah you can fry that no problem. The only place I've ever had fried clam strips was at Long Johns on the Westbank and they were not worth trying twice?

Bonefish grill and they wrapped in bacon

  3. Vicky, there is no way you ate fried clams as part of a seafood platter here. If so, I would be amazed.

They fry scallops in the north east? That seems like a waste. Pan seared, or grilled scallops are among my favorite seafood dishes.

You can get scallops at the supermarket and learn how to make your own.

Thanks for all the suggestions... I *do* love New Orleans seafood - especially the jumbo shrimp and oysters (I've never found any oysters that compare with down here - and we lived in Europe for the past four years).  I know how to pan sear scallops and I've gotten good sea scallops (previously frozen, but still decent) at Whole Foods in Metairie (I live in Algiers Point).  I found that Salvo's Seafood in Belle Chasse has clam strips, so I might try them sometime soon.

I haven't been back to Massachusetts/Maine since we returned to the States (October 2012) and I was hoping to find something like what I'd get at home.  I appreciate your imput!!  :0))

Sorry I can't help you with your search but I can tell you that on the West Bank I really like Salvo's for fresh seafood! My parents and I love that joint! Check out my review! Good luck on your quest!

Two places come to mind for Fried Clams - Salvo's Seafood in Belle Chasse and Porter and Luke's on Metairie Road.
Not up to New England grade but about the only game in town for Fried Clams.
