I am going to be in your fine city at the beginning of April and I am going with several people that have never been to New Orleans so one of the first places I would like to go would be a place that offers good crawfish. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Check out the Bulldog Pub on Magazine. Across the street there is a place (Big Fisherman) that will sell you crawfish to go. Take them over to the Bulldog and enjoy them with as many cold beverages as possible.

I would be interested in hearing any other spots for crawfish (one of the many great things about NOLA).
FYI I have heard that this has not been a very good year for crawfish--blame Gustav.3/10/2009 -

I've actually gotten good boiled crawfish at local groceries too. It really depends where in town you will be. And I will 3rd Big Fisherman, plus they sell boil potatoes and corn.

I had a decent plate of Crawfish Etouffee at Muriel's at jackson Square. It is much cheaper to get them at a market, but Muriel's was a good experience.

I just had Jacques-Imo's stuffed crawfish last week and it was TO DIE FOR. Like, literally, if I'm ever on death row for, say, murdering Jennifer Love Hewitt (you are NOT Audrey Hepburn, and you're kidding yourself with that middle name!) my last meal will be catered by J-Mo's. THAT is how good it is.

Jacques-Imo's (for dinner sit-down meal) and Crabby Jack's (for counter or take out around lunch) are owned/managed by the same guy, Jack. He adds a little licorice flavor (anise?) to his crawfish mix as well as some chili pwoder. Makes for an interesting time, but I tire of it after a while.
Our favorite is Village Inn on Jefferson Highway in River Ridge. (2 blocks down of the light at Orchard Road.) They consistently have excellent crabs as well.3/15/2009 -
Village Inn sells boiled seafood? I had no idea. I haven't eaten there since a friend worked there in like...1984, maybe.

Charle's (or Charlie's depending on wether you read the sign on the door or the window) on Jeff Hwy is also good. Rouses is surprisingly good also.

Charlie's or Crabby Jack's. Crabby Jack's could possibly be the spiciest crawfish I've ever had. Deanie's seafood has some decent crawfish as well.

Crawfish will never truly satisfy at a restaurant...If I was a tourist in the Quarter with a group of friends, I'd jump in a cab and run out to Captain Sal's on St Claude or Cajun Seafood at 1479 N Claiborne and pick up a few pounds per person, those are the closest to the Quarter and where most people I know grab them... Jump back in the cab and eat 'em in a park or cover a table in your hotel with newspaper and go nuts there.

It doesn't really matter where you go in New Orleans, because New Orleans just doesn't do crawfish as well as they do in Southwest Louisiana. I guess Big Fisherman is ok, although they are generally small and the depth of flavor is kinda disappointing sometimes. Charlie's is also pretty decent. Again, I wouldn't say New Orleans is particularly known for having the greatest boiled crawfish (although it is often portrayed that way). Eh, just buy a sack and boil your own, it's better that way anyway.

I believe this place called B & L seafood on Rampart has the best crawfish. This place is a little hard to find and a little off the beaten path, not to mention, not the 'best' neighborhood... but they have the best!!!!
My second suggestion would be Fisherman's Cove in Kenner, La. Kenner is only abt 10 miles from New Orleans.4/9/2009 -

The Bulldog/Big Fisherman's is the way to go - Magazine Street is great, and a nice break from the French Quarter.
And, your soem of your friends won't either like crawfish or can't handle the spice, so at least they'll be somewhere with other food options...
Have fun!4/13/2009
