God, I just love good food gossip.

Let's celebrate openings with Marielle S (over here: yelp.com/topic/new-orlea…) and whisper about the closings with me, your friendly local kitchen creep!

We're losing some great shops on January 1. Have you heard of anything else marking their own demise? Share the news here!

  1. I've been hearing that some of my long time loves are struggling... I hope none close in 2018

I feel like we could write some sort of blessing about that: may we only lose the shitty, the awful, the truly missable so their staff is now free to get jobs with shops who care.

Hrm hrm hrm. Needs some refining before we offer it up to San Pasqual.

Que Rico in Slidell is closing their current location, according to Facebook. They lost their lease. They said they hope to reopen somewhere else but, if you want to get your fix just in case, their last day is March 25th. I've never eaten there (but I've heard raves), so hopefully I'll be road tripping to Slidell before they lock the doors.

Apparently, the Caribbean Room is closing on the 15th. One of my classmates is a captain there, and he said that the decor isn't changing until they close if anyone wants to get one last taste of that goodness.

  5. Closing but really more of a consolidation.  I actually never even heard of the joint.

Libby, Hot Tin and the other spots in the hotel will be open. The new spot-Jack Rose-will be a more affordable joint, but they will keep the mile-high pie on the menu.

  8. I hope they go back to the original version of the Mile High Pie with meringue instead of the NASTY "updated" version with marshmallow.  Maybe places will learn that most of us don't want "updated" or "reconstructed" or "deconstructed" or otherwise destroying the flavor, texture and ambiance of the food we love.  Give us the classic recipe without trying to change it to suit your chef personality or anything else!!!  Marshmallow is just GROSS icky and unacceptable.

  9. How soon will it be open? Still under the  Best umbrella? The Caribbean Room was one of those iconic Nola places...so sorry to see it go.

  10. Multiple places have been kicking Besh group out due to his sexual harrassment deal that was brought out by Shaya.

I set up the sound system for their grand opening and the owner tried to say I was late and didn't want to pay. WhenI pulled out the GPS tracker app on my phone and said I was happy to call the cops, they paid. Then tried to give us a bad rating until I commented on his post reminding him I had that tracker still.

  14. One of my favorite restaurants, La Provence, has closed for regular dining. This is a major bummer.

Here is the email I received a week or so ago:

"Dear La Provence Friends & Family,

La Provence will be closed for Open Dining, including Brunch and Dinner Services.  We apologize for any inconvenience!  We know how much La Provence means to you!  You all are part of what makes La Provence, LA PROVENCE.

  18. El Patio has died a well earned death and looks like La Casita is takibg their place it seems as they have their sign up now.

  19. Not a closing but still a loss to the NOLA community.  I just saw that "Tee Eva" Perry, who was known for her Magazine Street praline shop & restaurant died Thursday, June 8 at age 83.  So just a wake up call for those of y'all that still haven't gone to eat at Dooky Chase as Chef Leah Chase is definitely not getting any younger so make sure to visit soon!  These folks just will never be replaced and there is less and less of the old NOLA culture, fun and food that folks like these blessed the world with so make sure to experience it while you can!!!

But two interesting arguments that cite the business economic realities as to why new restaurants are lined up to take the shuttereds places: once someone else has bankrupted on the expensive build-out (Kenton's, etc.), new low-capitalized restaurants only have rental expenses since the plant and equipment have already been paid for.

I'm looking forward to the Kolache shop on Freret!

  24. I might change my name to just "Kolache" so that I could later be the artist formerly known as Kolache.  I never really found any Kolaches in Texas that excited me so maybe this new joint will do a crawfish one to liven me up.

  30. Krewe du Brew on St Charles closed up shop. They were so nice.

  31. Jen B- word on the street is that the employees are being shifted to other Landry's restaurants. Not sure if that was always the plan or public dismay made them do better!

I agree Jen, it's a shame that so many places are closing. But the pendulum is swinging back and the market is right-sizing. This was inevitable. We have the smallest percentage of middle to affluent classes in the nation among the top 40. The good news is that the carpetbaggers have quit New Orleans having "done it". Now, hopefully, a ground swell of newly empowered locals will insist on buying local like in the 1980s after the oil bust. The dawn rises at the apex of the dark!

Bud's Broiler by City Park is officially gone. The building is up for lease.

  39. And Roux Carre is closing December 21st. I think there downfall was the semi-outdoor nature of the business. The weather had to be just right for me to want to go there.
