what are the best kid friendly restaurants in the French quarter...

  1. Fancy or casual?

All of the casual restaurants are kid friendly as are most of the fancy ones. It just depends on the ages of the kids and their ability to control their kidness.

we visit new Orleans quite a lot this visit we are bringing our 2 year old very active granddaughter...I would not want to take her anywhere that she would be annoying to other diners, as I know people spend quite a lot of money to enjoy their meals.....I have been to bubba gumps many times and I feel that would be a good choice but was wanting some additional options as well...I have never been to Mulate's, she loves to dance (tried to get my husband to dance with her at Luby's Saturday.)....would this maybe be a good option?...I do know that it is outside of French Quarter and that is fine!

  3. Shirley, I am going to assume you are not a troll and address your questions. Bubba Gump is a chain restaurant. When in New Orleans I suggest you venture out from the Luby's/BG type places.

Two year olds can be hard. But there are a lot of loud, casual places that she would love. Acme Oyster House is touristy, but has great fried seafood, raw oysters and gumbo. If they're too packed, go across the street to Felix's.

Cafe du Monde would be perfect for a toddler. Just make sure she doesn't snort powdered sugar. Kids sometimes think it's coke and go a bit crazy.

Johnny's Po-Boys is another loud, casual place with good food.

If you decide you really want a chain experience, I'd bet Bert can point you in the right direction.

John L. H., I am not trolling yelp. I actually really thought I might get some helpful answers on here...Ooops, my bad! I do not live in Nola, but do frequent it and although Bubba Gumps is touristy, that is what I am! The best I guess that I can hope for where I come from is "Luby's". As for the Coke comment, wow really! and as for the Bert comment, there is know need to be so snide! I am seriously trying to find somewhere that my Granddaughter will not annoy other guest. That being said, Thanks for your help and have a blessed day!

  4. Alright. I was genuinely trying to help you. While I used humor, I was most certainly not snide in my comment about Bert. You see, that was an inside joke that Nola Yelpers will get.

I assumed you may be a troll because you have zero reviews, zero friends and no photo of yourself. Try asking that question on another city's threads and see what happens. Especially as poorly worded as it was.

Bubba Gump and Luby's may be great restaurants. But New Orleans is internationally known for it's cuisine. I was trying to direct you to local places where you could take your granddaughter. The places I recommended are the same price, or cheaper than Bubba Gump or Luby's, but far better. Eating at Bubba Gump in New Orleans would be like visiting Texas and eating Taco Bell. Sure Taco Bell is awesome, but Texas has great, local Mexican food.

As for having a blessed day, no thanks. I've got other plans.

Ok, I'm in one of those helpful moods today, so I'm just going to squeeze past my old buddy John and offer you up some quick advice, Shirley. I don't have a kid but I think I can offer up some places that will be pretty fun and family friendly (even if a little 'touristy') in the Quarter for you and yours. For breakfast, check out Old Coffee Pot, Ruby Slipper, or Camellia Grill. For lunch and beyond, try Napoleon House, Gumbo Shop, Drago's (Riverwalk) or other places in Riverwalk.
I think Mulate's is a great choice. I would steer clear of Johnny's and Acme due to the long lines. And John was right about Cafe Du Monde, it would be a great place to take the little one.
And John really is one of the nicest and most helpful people on NOLA Yelp, sorry that the sense of humor didn't translate. Hope you have a great trip. You should write reviews to help out others with little ones!

Did she really think John was being serious with the "coke" comment? Erm...

Lindsay, Thank you so much for your help and John my apologies to you. I just stumbled onto yelp and seriously had no idea that not having a profile picture and bad grammar and no friends would be setting myself up as a troll. This is my first time to every even be on this site! John I hope that you can understand my being a little skeptical of your humor after the guy posted the "weird al yankovic video link" and you thinking it was the best video link ever, as making fun of my post.  My second comment was trying to fill you in on her age and the ability to control her kindness. In your reference to Bert (because I am not a NOLA yelper) I thought you was referencing "Bert and Ernie." Please forgive me John for being so condescending to you in regards to your help. My husband and I frequent NOLA quite often and now that I have explained myself to you I am hoping that you can forgive my ignorance and maybe offer up some other helpful tips for a good time. Lindsay girl thank you so much, I kind of already had The Ruby Slipper and Café Beignet on Royal in mind for breakfast. My husband and I always do breakfast at The Clover Grill but I really want to make this an enjoyable experience for my Granddaughter, so that is why I wanted to try and find fun places for us to dine.  I think Mulate's is probably a good choice as well. Thanks to both of you for your help!

So, you didn't like the video?

  5. Shirley, will you have access to a car? Do you mind driving to areas other than the quarter?

Some of the more neighborhood type areas should have plenty of restaurants that can accommodate a two year old.

One tip I learned long ago is to done during off peak times. 11 for lunch or 5 for dinner and you'll avoid a lot of the wait times that make toddlers lose their cool.

  6. Anna, adults are supposed to snort the sugar. Just not kids.

Yes John we are driving so we will have a car. You responded, so I guess that means I am forgiven, correct? I really do apologize.

Don't mind mean old John. He's known on here for being a grumpy old man. The rest of us sweet and helpful people will do ALL the work for ya.

  7. I think a well behaved child is welcome most places. I was chatting with someone today who told me that he was at an expensive steakhouse and a child was running amok. AND then the kid ran to his table and snatched food off his plate. Unbelievable.

lol Bobby, I think that since John and I have cleared the cob webs about one to the other, we are fine. To bad the rest of the world can not take a que from us and work in such harmony. Jen, what happened to the person that you was chatting with is exactly why I posted my comment on this site. I know that although I am a Grandmother, when my husband and I venture outside of Luby's and go to a more upscale restaurant I do not want to listen to a whinny kid or watch them run all over the place. Kids are people too and I want to be respectful of the other guy and how much they might want to enjoy their meal. My Granddaughter is a pretty live wire, I would spank her butt if she ever if thought about grabbing food off someone else's plate.

You're wrong. John is the devil.

  8. Shirley, we good.

Disregard Bobby. He is just jealous because he has a reputation around here. You see, he is the kindest, gentlest fella for miles around. He just acts grumpy, but he's a sweetheart.

Since you'll have a car, I encourage you to venture out. Russell's Marina Grill is a great place for lunch. Take some bread to go and drive to the marina up the road. You and your granddaughter can feed the seagulls at the Point near the marina. She will love it.

This thread is TL;DR, and I'm being lazy today.

Someone may have mentioned this already, most restaurants are kid friendly, even the fancy ones, it all depends on the kid. I won't take my wiggle butt niece to the nice quiet restaurants because she can't sit still for a quarter of the time it would take to finish the meal. I've heard some horror stories of kids in a restaurant. An example would be a family took their destructive child into a restaurant and let them run rampant and jump wildly around. The staff even asked the parents to do something about the kids because their jumping was causing the ceiling tiles below to fall off. The staff had to grin and bear it. I have also been to a nice restaurant where a bachelorette party was screaming and didn't care who they were disturbing. I have also been to kid-friendly restaurants, but they also have their limits with screaming kids.

Moral of my long and rambling stories: any restaurant would love to have you and your family in their establishment unless they have video gambling (no one under 21). I'm sure you have good judgement as to whether your child can behave themselves appropriately at meal time (no jumping or screaming) and how long they can sit still for (as I'm sure you know, the fancy places take more time than casual places). You may want to call ahead at the fancy restaurants to see if they have a secret kid friendly menu.

ok, I went back and read the thread a little more: 2 year old, YAY! Places I took my then 2 year old niece when she came and visited me:

Shirley, I totally agree with John on Russell's Marina Grill. I used to go there all the time with my grandmother and great grandmother and order the Filet Mignon with chocolate milk without breaking the bank.
