A 25-year-old man suffered facial injuries in the terrifying incident.

Police have released images of two men they want to speak to over an alleged tomahawk assault that played out in front of customers at a shopping centre near the NSW-Queensland border on Thursday.

Emergency services were called to Tweed City Shopping Centre on Minjungbal Dr in Tweed Heads South following reports several people had been involved in an altercation about 3.30pm and a 25-year-old man had been hurt.

He was treated for facial injuries by paramedics and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

“A tomahawk has been seized by police for forensic examination,” authorities said on Friday amid an appeal for help tracking down two men they believe can help with their investigation.

One was described as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, aged in his 20s, with a medium build and short dark hair.

He was wearing a black jacket, grey pants and green Nike shoes.

The second man was described as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, aged in his 20s, with a medium build and long dark hair.

He was wearing a multi-coloured football shirt with the number 10 on it and cream pants.

One person commenting online said: “I walked in just as (the alleged incident) happened”.

“Not a nice scene at all. What’s this world coming to?” they posted.
