Editorial Reviews

Masterworks Broadway is proud to release the Original Broadway Cast Recording of THE PROM, a new musical comedy (with issues!). The album features original music by Tony Award Nominee Matthew Sklar (Elf, The Wedding Singer) and lyrics by four-time Tony Award Nominee Chad Beguelin (Aladdin, Elf). We ve got trouble, folks, right here in Indiana and when Broadway's brassiest hear a student is unceremoniously sidelined from a small-town Indiana prom and the press is involved they are ready to kick-ball-change the world. A new musical comedy about the power of love (and a good 11 o clock number), THE PROM is about so much more than just a dance.

I loved 'The Prom'. It's a film with heart, compassion and a real slice-of-life of how society segregates, judges and is intolerant of people being who they are. Produced by Ryan Murphy, Alexis Martin Woodall,
Adam Anders, Dori Berinstein, Bill Damaschke and directed by Ryan Murphy with a screenplay by Bob Martin and .Chad Beguelin which is based on 'The Prom' stage play by Chad Beguelin, Bob Martin and Matthew Sklar.

With a cast that includes Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells and newcomers Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana DeBose. With amazing appearances by Tracey Ullman, Kevin Chamberlin, Mary Kay Place and a stellar performance by Kerry Washington.

It's beautiful Cinematography byMatthew Libatique and flash cut edited by Peggy Tachdjian and Danielle Wang. The music and songs are well written by Matthew Sklar and David Klotz and compliment the mood, story and heart of the message of equality and tolerance.

This film is something I would wish all parents watch with their kids. Spark conversation and have open minds and hearts together.

“The Prom” opened in the Fall on Broadway. Though I have not seen it, I certainly am aware that it had good reviews, including its score, and box success. Still, I was not expecting that I would thoroughly enjoy the score as much as I liked this one. The composing team of Sklar and Beguilen had modest success with “Wedding Singer” and “Elf”, whose CD’s (and “Elf” on stage) did not particular excite me. One sure winner for a score is to start with a song, “Changing Lives”, about the joy of musicals, delivered by the cast of a musical and reprised when it failure sends them off to do good and help a lesbian couple have a prom. Later the school principal adds another one, “We Look to You”, in interacting with the Broadway cast.
Overall the singing is excellent, particularly the two young females who are the lesbian couple. The songs are alternately tuneful, joyful, and poignant. The story line follows a happiness arc similar to the popular “Kinky Boots” musical. The CD carries the story line beautifully through the content of the songs. Anyone who enjoys musicals should have the CD or enjoy the music through their streaming service or downloads.

A story about a gay teen wanting to go to prom with her girlfriend in Nowhere, Indiana sounds like an inherently political topic, and it is, but the story of The Prom is nothing but joy. A bunch of narcissistic Broadway stars think that they can restore their reputations by getting involved in the girl's challenge, and of course make it worse. Hilarity ensues. The music is self-aware in its place on the stage, poking fun at the absurdity of celebrity just as much as it pokes fun at the intolerant. It's heart is a message of love and understanding. The vocal performances of the principals are all-star, start to finish. The recording represents the live production well (I saw it last week), and doesn't embellish in a mix that sounds like an over-engineered version of the band you hear in the theater.

This show has been on repeat in my car for days.

I just bought this CD on the recommendations of other reviewers to add to my collection. The plot is relevant to our times – rights of individuals to be different. The songs and singers both seemed to me to keep improving as the show progressed. Perhaps this is a clever ploy on the part of the writer (s) that they are achieving what was their objective. Anyway, I really enjoyed the whole show. The singers were great.

What a lovely, bouncy score (it reminds me of the score of BABY in this regard): cute, clever lyrics and terrific voices to put it all across. At last year's TONY awards, it was this show's number that seemed the best of all of them.
And sure enough, the album is, too.

Great cast makes most of good hearted show aimed at raising the consciousness of bigots (but offensive in pandering to them along the way in the first 20 minutes right wing depiction of "liberal" actors). Only two really good songs (one for one of the core girls and one for the wonderful Christopher Siebert) but terrific choreography (not on album). CD put in oversized padded envelope which did not protect it and it arrived with cover broken. Still, cover art a step up from the poster/marquee used at theatre (blessedly more subtle). 'Glad to have it, and if you haven't seen the show it does give a good idea of the experience, but it won't get a *lot* of time on my CD player.

Too bad that this show did not last that long on Broadway. The score is great and the performances are wonderful. Happy to know that Netflix is turning it into a movie.

This soundtrack has made me love this Broadway show even more! Seeing it live I was unable to catch all of the witty lyrics imbedded in the songs and this soundtrack allowed me to hear them all! I loved the show and love having the soundtrack!

My daughter and I saw The Prom on Broadway a couple of months ago and thought it was one of the best shows ever. The music is great and the performers are fabulous. I recommend the recording to all musical fans. If you have the opportunity, GO SEE THE SHOW!

Good album, some catchy tunes. There is a certain sameness to the songs, but overall I am very glad I got it. The last number is definitely an earworm!
