Instant New York Times Bestseller

“Unimpeachably terrific.” —The New York Times Book Review

For fans of Ruth Ware, Shari Lapena, and Donna Tartt: a twisty, fast-paced, cinematic literary thriller, and an ingenious book within a book, by the #1 internationally bestselling author of The Enigma of Room 622

Marcus Goldman is riding high. The twenty-eight-year-old writer is the new darling of American letters, whose debut novel has sold two million copies. But when it comes time to produce a new book, he is sidelined by a crippling case of writer’s block. He travels to Somerset, New Hamprshire, to see his mentor, Harry Quebert, one of the country’s most respected writers, hoping to jar his creative juices as his publisher’s deadline looms. But Marcus’s plans are upended when Harry is sensationally implicated in a cold-case murder: Fifteen-year-old Nola Kellergan went missing in 1975, and Harry admits to having had an affair with her. Following a trail of clues through the backwoods and isolated beaches of New Hampshire, Marcus must answer two questions, which are mysteriously connected: Who killed Nola Kellergan? And how do you write a book to save someone’s life?

Translated from the French by Sam Taylor

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, May 2014: A successful young author suffering from writer’s block journeys to New Hampshire to visit his former professor. Shortly after he arrives, the bones of a girl are found buried in the professor’s backyard. Now the professor has been arrested for the murder of the girl--who disappeared in 1975 at the age of fifteen--and the author has an idea: he will write a book based on the case that will ultimately exonerate his professor and jumpstart his writing. Already a massive best seller in Europe (and translated into 32 languages), The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair arrives in North America amid such wild praise you might expect something groundbreaking. Instead, what you get is a wonderful, fun, and boisterous read, a book with an uncanny ability to both fascinate and amuse you. Twists and turns and oddball characters make this a rollicking bullet-train of a novel. --Chris Schluep

From Booklist

This best-selling, award-winning, French literary thriller from a 28-year-old Swiss author has arrived in the U.S. with fanfare not heard since The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. So what is all the fuss about? That’s puzzling. Jumping back and forth in time from 1975 to 2008, the novel is narrated by Marcus Goldman, a twentysomething writer whose first book was a smashing success but who is suffering from writer’s block at the prospect of penning a follow-up. He travels to rural New Hampshire to visit his former professor and mentor, Harry Quebert, whose first novel was also a best-seller and brought him instant celebrity. But in the midst of the reunion, the body of a 15-year-old girl is discovered on Quebert’s property and Quebert is arrested for murder. Goldman sets out to prove his mentor innocent, and in the process he writes his long-delayed second book, The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair, which becomes even more successful than his first. With a plethora of suspects, readers are certain to be caught up in the drama—by the the time the book ends, nearly every major character in the story has taken a turn as the likely killer. Beyond the whodunit aspect, however, readers may find themselves shaking their heads at the almost cartoonish characterizations and soap-operatic dialogue. The real mystery here is why we keep reading—but, for some reason, we do. --Bill Ott

I loved the story and how, with Marcus you are learning (in his pace) the truth about the affair between Harry quebert and 15-year-old Nola Kellergan, who after 33 years of disappearance was found death in Harry's backyard. This thriller has everything! Love, friendships, betrayal, mystery. My only complaint is that on some parts I just felt it too long, as if the author was giving me a lot of unnecessary details. But overall a great, easy to read novel!

This book was very enjoyable, as it has a flowing, easy to read style and good dialogue. There are so many viable suspects for the crimes, just about anyone could be guilty. Some of the characters were pretty over the top. Not that it's unbelievable, but it's so twisty and sort of convoluted that it stretches the imagination. Still, I enjoyed it a lot and was eager to find out where it would all end up. And in the end, it was well worth the read.

I finished it last night-- loved it!, but am so sad it's over now. It was nice to get really engrossed in a story(engrossed =600 pages) that was just a story. There was no push for me to go out and change the world now that I've finished-no overriding theme or sentiment shoved down my throat. Whew!
The characters were very robust, flawed and complex. There was also some melodrama cheese that worked perfectly. The plot unwound like a tangled knot. Every time you thought you had it worked out there was a little catch.
There was certainly enough substance to make a book club discussion-- but not so much that this couldn't be a great summer vacation read.

"Quebert Affair" is generally competently written, at times compelling, and occasionally touching. It is rarely exciting and is overlong and full of red-herrings. I personally am not fond of frequent skips in time (forward and backward), setting and perspective, which is basically how the book is constructed. New information is often introduced, followed by a flashback with more detail. This really pads out the book and is occasionally annoying.

The book has two main characters: the narrator and his mentor Harry Quebert. I didn't find either of them particularly sympathetic or even realistic. The loss of Harry Quebert's "soul mate", the murdered Nola, is very sad of course, but returning to his grief over and over becomes, at least for me, tedious. Nola herself is very sketchy, and is the subject of all sorts of changes, doubts and psychological revisions

Perhaps it is the translation, but I found the dialogue naive and unconvincing, the writing "advice" usually superficial, and the sexual references basically self-conscious, ambiguous (especially with respect to Harry and Nola), definitely unexciting, and actually quite old-fashioned.

The frequent plot twists ("red herrings" mentioned above) are clever at first, but after a while I simply ignored any hints the author offered since it was clear they were not to be trusted, since new information was almost certainly to be introduced rendering them "inoperative".

Nevertheless, the book is a pretty good summertime distraction, which is, after all, why I purchased it (Kindle edition). I don't think it will become a classic.

This mystery is a fast paced and entertaining novel. It was an easy read and had an interesting moving storyline. I did not feel as though there were any boring/slow pointes, the events kept it entertaining. The storylines flowed nicely together in the end and was left open for a sequel.

I would give this book a 4 out of 5. I was not too big of a fan of the ending and there are a few loose ends that I felt were not wrapped up with the complete storyline and its parts. I would still recommend it to read.

1) I found this to be a page turner, so make sure you have time in your life to become addicted to this tale. Once you start, you won't want to stop until the tale has fully unfolded. (This would be a great vacation book--but be aware it is a "tome" with 635 pages.)

2) Pay attention to the dates. This tale is filled with flash backs, and they appear randomly, not always sequentially.

3) Just when you think you know the culprit, you will be blindsided. There are so many twists and turns that at some point you will feel like giving it up, but keep going because it is at this point that all will slowly unfold.

Enjoy the ride!

I can't remember being so riveted by a book since I read Scott Turow's "Presumed Innocent" (to which "The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair" bears absolutely no resemblance except that it is a compulsively readable murder mystery). I may be influenced enough by hype to *buy* a book, but no amount of hype can trick me into reading two or three hours in a stretch (as I did with this book) and only *imagining* I am laughing and enjoying myself. I am bewildered by the number of 3-, 2-, and 1-star reviews and especially by complaints that the story or the characters are not, in some respect or other, realistic. They're not *supposed* to be! "The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair" is so sensationally entertaining all the way through that you'll be afraid the ending can't possibly be satisfying, but I certainly was not disappointed.

I've been wanting to read this book for some time and I finally got my hands on this book.
I'm a slow reader and I usually read only before going to bed.
However, this book kept me reading during my lunch hour at work and after dinner, too.
The stroy gets interesting and I simply wanted to know what will happen next.
After I finished this book, I was kind of sorry that I couldn't continue.
Since I like Patrick Dempsey, I watch the film, too. But as usual, book is 100 times better than film.
