Product Description

Get ready to experience an exhilarating journey into one of Manhattan's most vibrant communities, named "BEST MUSICAL OF THE YEAR" by New York Magazine and "BEST OF 2007" by the New York Times. With an amazing cast, incredible dancing and a gripping story of hope and self-discovery, in the Heights is your ticket into a world where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. Find out what it takes to make a living, what it costs to have a dream, and what it means to be home... in the Heights.

Broadway hasn't been very good at incorporating various strands of pop and rock over the past 40 years. Most of the shows attempting that draw from contemporary chart sounds have felt awkward, rather than "young." It's all the more rewarding, then, that 2008 saw not one but two successful efforts - Passing Strange and In the Heights. The latter, set in New York's predominantly Dominican neighborhood of Washington Heights, is propelled by first-timer Lin-Manuel Miranda's high-energy, horn-and-percussion-driven score. Miranda managed to modernize classic elements found in most Broadway shows by mixing them up with Latin and hip-hop arrangements. "In the Heights" and "The Club" are joyous ensemble numbers, for instance, while "Carnaval del Barrio" is an uplifting eleven o'clock belt, "Sunrise" a romantic duet and "Everything I Know" a sentimental soliloquy. While Miranda himself convincingly plays the lead, this is a true ensemble piece. The CD snaps, crackles and pops with stellar performances (special props to Mandy Gonzalez, Karen Olivo and the funny, brassy Andréa Burns). -- Elisabeth Vincentelli

Music and Passion makes In the Heights a hit
The emotions felt through the firey music need no translator: English or Spansih it is all the same. The lives of these people and their home in Washington Heights are lived daily and with as much passion as anywhere in the world. The latin style music and frequent lyrics in Spanish only emphasize the emotion of the story. This is not some used plot turned hispanic to create a new audience....this is the voice of those who imigrated and built families here. The values of their lives; family, work and self worth and how they keep themsleves going toward the dream they have...that we all have for our lives. The use of rap to bring more current the social and musical culture of the people is blended with more traditional latin based music as well as comtemporary music. This is not a work that can be sectioned out by track...while some stand alone and can be enjoyed for what they are; together they help to convey the full experience of the work as a whole.

I love the soundtrack. I did not see the Broadway play, only the movie. Same songs plus a few more. I purchased both soundtracks, love them both. The song order can be confusing if you only saw the movie and not the play, but the talent is phenomenal on both versions.

I'm not of Latin descent but I love this album and hope someday to see the production. While I am not like any of the characters, I feel like I'm all of the characters as they sing about their hopes, dreams, and concerns for the future. From the opening "In the Heights" to the "Finale", the audience follows the lives of Usnavi, a bodega owner, his crush Vanessa, his substitute abuela Claudia, and others on the hottest day of the year in Washington Heights, NYC. It's hard to listen without dancing to the bright songs or tearing up during the songs that cascade pain and love. Lin-Manuel Miranda's first Tony Award winning musical shows the brilliance that he has proven since.

I've seen the show and movie. The voices in the Broadway cast are better. What delighted me the most was the bonus of receiving the full libretto along with the recording.

i loved this musical so much and thought that this album was way better than the movie’s. This vinyl was the perfect addition to my collection and it is visually stunning and plays beautifully, highly recommend!

A fantastic musical that I had the pleasure of seeing at the local community college. I had to own the CD, so I eventually bought it. Full of fun characters, catchy songs, and tearful songs, In the Heights is one of my favorite musicals ever. I personally love the songs “Blackout” and “Benny’s Dispatch”. I would recommend looking up a synopsis of the musical or seeing it live before you listen to the CD, though that can be said for almost any musical recording. My one complaint is that the discs were hard to remove from the case and I sometimes feel they will eventually break from me trying to get them out. Overall, a great CD for anyone who loves Lin Manuel-Miranda or musicals in general.

I bought this Original Broadway Cast Recording for myself after seeing a wonderful cast in Sydney in a lical production of In the Heights at the Sydney Opera House.

The original cast is great, and it's a delight to have this CD with photos from the original production, and all the lyrics in the booklet.
Great value and very enjoyable.

We got this as a way to surprise our kids with tickets to In The Heights when it came through Seattle. We love listening now and remembering seeing it live. Great music, lovely story. Lin Manuel Miranda is a genius. How lucky we are to be alive when he is creating amazing music.

After bying the Hamilton OBC recording album, watching In The Heights was a must.
However much I love the 2021 film version of the songs these original versions of them are just so addictive. I like them more than the film version and so the album was a must buy for me.
Couldn't be more satisfied!

I enjoyed the recent movie soundtrack from the film version of In the Heights, but was curious to hear and compare the original Broadway soundtrack as well. You can feel the vibrancy of this "new" (for its time back in 2008) kind of musical soundtrack, and can see the early signs of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical genius.
