Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Edgar-winner Coben's 10th Myron Bolitar novel (after Long Lost) is a perfect 10: providing readers with new information about the past of the former athlete turned agent and owner of MB Reps; a satisfyingly complex mystery; and the always entertaining, sometimes shocking exploits of Bolitar's partner and friend, Windsor Horne Lockwood III (aka Win). Suzze Tervantino, a former tennis prodigy and one of Bolitar's first clients, visits his New York office and shows him a Facebook posting that suggests that her husband, rock star Lex Ryder, isn't the father of the child she's carrying. When Ryder, also a client of MB Reps, disappears, Suzze begs Bolitar to find him. In the process, Bolitar catches a glimpse of his sister-in-law, Kitty, at a crowded nightclub, and begins a search for her and his estranged younger brother, Brad, whom he hasn't seen for 16 years. This explosively fast thriller will leave fans clamoring for more. (Mar.)

From Booklist

Coben, who has perfected the techno-thriller, in which social media tools are used in ingeniously devious ways (Hold Tight, 2008), has won the trifecta of mystery awards: the Edgar, the Shamus, and the Anthonyand is the only writer to have such a clutch at his command. Here, he returns to his humble roots and resurrects his sports agent and sleuth Myron Bolitar, who appeared in Cobens debut, Deal Breaker, in 1995, and has starred in nine other novels. Coben may be a little too fond of Bolitar; over the years, he has transformed him from a struggling New Jersey sports agent to a wildly successful superagent who handles all forms of entertainment and, bad news for the reader, is now given to self-indulgent introspection, rumination, and endless dialogue with his sidekick, Win. This overwriting changes the Bolitar novel from spare and lively to a flabby 350-plus pager. A prime example of this works need for a less-indulgent author (or editor) is the cringe-inducing scene in which Win appears with two Asian beauties, named Mee and Yu. Bolitar and Win carry on with sophomoric puns and a forecast of sexual activity that is supposed to be hilarious but reads as incredibly insensitive. The plot is fairly standard, involving a client whose husband disappears, with a link to Bolitars sister-in-law and estranged brother. Bracing action, a Coben staple, is bogged down by bloated writing. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Coben takes a literary misstep with his return to series character Myron Bolitar, but his name-brand status ensures an audience. --Connie Fletcher

With over 80 million books in print worldwide, Harlan Coben is the #1 New York Times author of thirty five novels including WIN, THE BOY FROM THE WOODS, RUN AWAY, FOOL ME ONCE, TELL NO ONE and the renowned Myron Bolitar series. His books are published in 46 languages around the globe.

Harlan is the creator and executive producer of several Netflix television dramas including FOOL ME ONCE, STAY CLOSE, THE STRANGER, SAFE, THE FIVE, THE INNOCENT and THE WOODS. He is also the creator and executive producer of the Prime Video series Harlan Coben’s SHELTER, based on his young adult books featuring Mickey Bolitar. Harlan was the showrunner and executive producer for two French TV mini-series, UNE CHANCE DE TROP (NO SECOND CHANCE) and JUST UN REGARD (JUST ONE LOOK). KEINE ZWEIT CHANCE, also based on Harlan’s novel, aired in Germany on Sat1.

Harlan’s novel TELL NO ONE (NE LE DIS A PERSONNE) was turned into the renowned French film, directed by Guillaume Canet and starring Francois Cluzet. The movie was the top box office foreign-language film of the year in the USA, won the Lumiere (French Golden Globe) for best picture and was nominated for nine Cesars (French Oscar) and won four, including best actor, best director and best music.

Winner of the Edgar Award, Shamus Award and Anthony Award – the first author to win all three – international bestselling author Harlan Coben’s critically-acclaimed novels have been called “ingenious” (New York Times), “poignant and insightful” (Los Angeles Times), “consistently entertaining” (Houston Chronicle), “superb” (Chicago Tribune) and “must reading” (Philadelphia Inquirer).

In his first books, Coben immersed himself in the exploits of sports agent Myron Bolitar. Critics loved the series, saying, “You race to turn pages…both suspenseful and often surprisingly funny” (People). After seven books Coben wanted to try something different. “I came up with a great idea that simply would not work for Myron,” says Coben. The result was the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller TELL NO ONE, which became the most decorated thriller of the year. Two books later, Bookspan, recognizing Coben’s broad international appeal, named NO SECOND CHANCE its first ever International Book of the Month in 2003 – the Main Selection in 15 different countries.

Harlan was the first writer in more than a decade to be invited to write fiction for the NEW YORK TIMES op-ed page. His Father’s Day short story, THE KEY TO MY FATHER, appeared June 15, 2003. His essays and columns have appeared in many top publications including the New York Times, Parade Magazine and Bloomberg Views.

Harlan has received an eclectic variety of honors from all over the world. In Paris, he was awarded the prestigious Vermeil Medal of Honor for contributions to culture and society by the Mayor of Paris. He has won the El Premio del Novela Negra RBA in Spain, the Grand Prix de Lectrices in France, and the CWA/ITV3 Bestseller Dagger for favorite crime novelist in England. On the other end of the spectrum, Little League Baseball inducted Harlan into their Hall of Excellence in 2013, and Harlan is also a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame from his playing days at Amherst College.

Harlan was born in Newark, New Jersey. He still lives in New Jersey with his wife, Anne Armstrong-Coben MD, a pediatrician, and their four children.

With 203 reviews already in the can I don't expect this one to be of much (if any) interest, but I did want to record my 5 stars (it was excellent!!) and also get my take on the 1 stars off my chest.

Many of the 1 stars are about price, which is not at all helpful for other readers besides being to my mind an unethical censure of the book itself. You guys who live in the USofA are so lucky, having all the options at your disposal, why not just buy the product more suited to your pocket? As I understand it, delivery is cheap and takes 1 or 2 days. In my neck of the woods (backwoods?) mail delivery is around 2 weeks and shipping so expensive one might as well buy retail, which, let me tell you, is at best $30 for a hard cover here. So I bless my Kindle which makes it possible for me to buy more books than I could otherwise afford, and delivery takes place in 3 minutes and costs no extra. Does nobody appreciate this considerable added value?

Much of the critcism of the book concern the end of the story and the quick wrap up of the series. I'm sad about that too, I also loved them all, but I hold Coben to have taken a courageous step here. The characters are ageing, the music and celebrity references getting dated, the humour, remaining in character, is getting slightly stilted and the future love interest would just get ridiculous (or boring). Do you really LIKE Harry Bosch at 60? And heaven help us, Reacher is getting older too, and he does have a new love in every book - how many is he going to end up with? This way the characters remain fresh and my 10 MB books will sit in waiting (taking up no space in my house, please note) and after a couple of years I will read them all again with great pleasure.

As for the book itself, it has been rehashed so many times I won't go into that, but for me it was a great read, complicated, clever, plot within sub-plot within sub-plot, action packed with surprises all along the line. To be sure it requires a bit of a stretch of the imagination, (this is fiction, after all), and it was sad, but why should that not be part of a book - especially at the end of an era?

I won't be going for the Mickey books, I'm an adult see, but anything else that HC writes, and the ones I haven't read yet, bring them on. This author is too good to waste arguments on.

Faithful readers of the Myron Bolitar series by Harlan Coben should not miss "Live Wire" for any reason--particularly because of misrepresented evaluation scores that are skewed by those who rate the book low because of its Kindle pricing. Fans of buddy/best friend relationships in the mystery/suspense genre, whether Lansdale's Hap and Leonard series, James Lee Burke's Dave and Clete, or Randy Wayne White's Doc and Tomlinson, will be hard pressed to improve on the humorous, touching, and selfless friendship shared between Myron Bolitar and "Win" Lockwood over the years. In "Live Wire", the 10th in the series, their friendship and loyality are on full display and are deeply tested as it reveals the depths of their bonds as well as the sadness that can accompany the choices friends and family make. Indeed, this novel is all about family relationships and enduring friendships and how they can be affected by misspoken words and misguided deeds.

"Live Wire" is a bit deeper, darker, and more revealing--particularly regarding Myron's family and backstory--than previous efforts. The reward for the loyal reader is a great novel containing a central mystery that ultimately involves some characters from out of the past as well as a character study in Myron's devotion to his family and his pain and confusion from actions which resulted in the estrangement of his brother and sister-in-law 16 years earlier. Readers can enjoy the usual humor, suspense, gritty violence, and repartee that usually accompany a Myron/Win adventure while slowly becoming engrossed in a secondary plot that introduces Myron's complicated past and uncertain future with his long lost brother and sister-in-law and a 15-year-old nephew he has never met.

Suzze T, a former tennis phenom/celebrity is 8 months pregnant with rock star husband, Lex Ryder's, baby--or is it really his? Lex disappears after the baby's parenthood is questioned on the internet and Suzze begs Myron to find Lex and to find out who has posted the malicious information. Before long, Myron unexpectedly encounters Kitty Bolitar, former tennis sensation who married Myron's brother, Brad, and disappeared with him 16 years earlier after a destructive argument between the brothers. The story picks up steam as Myron and Win with help from Esperanza and Big Cindy leap into the fray to solve several mysteries that seem somehow too coincidental to not be related. Family sorrows take a back seat when Myron and Win are confronted with old enemies, the Ache brothers, and the deadly hitman, Evan Crisp.

"Live Wire" is fun, deeply engaging, and ultimately peculiarly sad as story lines and relationships take some unanticipated twists and turns. There is certainly room for future adventures in this great series but there is uncertainty and sadness hovering over the novel's conclusion. If you are a longtime fan of this series, I recommend you do not miss this one for any reason.

This was a somewhat different Mylon Bolitar novel - very focussed on close family. Nevertheless, it has an intriguing plot, tying off some multi-novel loose ends as it went. A very worthwhile, if emotional, read.

Einfach genial!
