First some background, I am a self-professed gear junkie and have been for over 30 years. As a Veteran, retired police, former DOD Combat Skills Instructor and now dog trainer I have had all kinds of gear in my hands, from inexpensive (not cheap) stuff to very high-end stuff. Being 6'2 and 320 lbs I am very hard on gear and break it like I am being paid to do so. Ok, that said. Here is my review.I got into hammocking over a decade ago and gave up sleeping on the ground. Being a gear junkie I quickly started off with very high end makers and it was all good stuff. Over the years I have purchased some inexpensive hammocks in order to have something to just throw in my daypack or to use around the house. With very little use I blew through them with rips and tears.Early this fall we moved from PA to TX and I have been going back for a few weeks at a time to train dog training clients. This started in September and continued in October and November. While in PA, instead of staying with friends, I decided to camp out close to a building where I had access to a shower, microwave etc. Instead of using my high end hammock gear, especially since bugs were not an issue and my expensive hammock has a bug net, I decided to use the Wise Owl. After almost 3 months of constant use I am a believer and have purchased several of these and will recommend them.A little hammock 101, the biggest difference between inexpensive hammocks that work well for the backyard, dayhike, or occasional overnighter is the suspension (the straps/ropes that you use to attach the hammock to what you are using to support it). So basically when you purchase a hammock from CHEAP to crazy expensive you are purchasing two things, the hammock itself and a suspension system. When it comes to the Wise Owl you get a quality hammock and a bombproof suspension system. The tree hugger straps are sewn well and have fixed loops that you hook the supplied carabiners on the end of the hammock into until you get the hammock where you want between your uprights. This system is awesome and will not ever fail you. As with any pursuit, after using a hammock for a while you get dialed in and eventually have preferences and biases. I add a “structural ridgeline” to any hammock I use or give away. You can look up their use and purpose. I also add a suspension to them from one of my favorite manufacturers. The latter of my add ons is completely unnecessary for the average user of this product. So most of my use and recommendations of the Wise Owl hammock are based on the extended use of the hammock itself which has always been where others have failed. I have never suffered a catastrophic suspension failure with any provided straps from any manufacturer. It has always been the stitching of the material of the hammock that has left me lying on the ground. This can make for a very unpleasant night if you were not prepared to sleep on the ground.Since the beginning of September I have slept very comfortably in this hammock for over six weeks in the woods. I liked it so much that I decided to hang it in my garage in TX and now that is where I sleep at home instead of my bed. In January I will be going back to PA for two weeks and it will be a tad chillier, and this is the hammock I will be using. Once you get into cold weather hammock hanging you need specific gear but the hammock itself is the foundation of that sleep system.Christmas is coming and these make amazing stocking stuffers. I have never met anyone who doesn't like laying in a hammock in the backyard to take a nap, but only a few like me seem to choose it as the way they sleep all the time. Be rest assured you can use the Wise Owl hammock with confidence.
