Purchase options and add-ons

A hilariously offbeat and tender comedy about one bipolar woman’s messy search for love at a seaside wedding where no one can stay afloat.

Is she falling in love, or falling apart?

Dee, Misa, and Matt were the "three musketeers" of the psych ward. A year after discharge, Dee is eager to convince everyone that she’s finally turning things around. But Matt and Misa are tying the knot in Turks and Caicos, surrounded by guests who have no idea where they met, and the secrecy isn’t sitting well with Dee, who has been hopelessly in love with Matt since before she got kicked out of the hospital.

So, when Dee arrives at the swanky resort with her high-voltage sister, Tilley, it’s now or never to confess how she feels. But disrupting her best friends’ nuptials would jeopardize the entire support system that holds the trio together. When it comes to happily ever afters, how is a girl supposed to choose between love and recovery?

Only problem is Dee is in love with Matt too, and her mission is to stop that wedding from happening. She decides to take them up on an offer and travel to an island in which the wedding will take place. Will this be a good vacation or a bad vacation? Will she get the guy she loves or let her best friend marry him???My thoughts 💭This book gave me My Best Friend’s Wedding mixed with Girl Interrupted vibes. It was more general fiction than romance and essentially focused on character development. It had me laughing with so many quirky things happening because our girl Dee is a hot mess and falling apart. I enjoyed that it had a happy ending for all, but I loved that it focused so much on mental health and self love. I adored all the characters especially Tilley😆 If you want an off beat story that focuses on love, friendship, and mental health, this is for you🫶🏻✨✨✨✨✨Trigger Warnings⚠️DepressionSuicidal ThoughtsSuicidal TendenciesMental Health

My first thought seeing this cover was romance especially when I read a destination wedding on the Turks And Caicos was at the center. But this was not romance in the strictest sense, and definitely not romcom - it's a story of unrequited love, it is also a story about mental health written by an author who is open about her own struggles with bipolar disorder.
This background made me careful with this story because I have lived my life as the child of someone with that same disorder but it has been handled delicately and accurately here, I just needed the courage to start reading ! Out since March 5th !
Dee, Matt, and Misa met a year prior to this story taking its start when they were patients in a psych ward. Now, Matt and Misa are getting married which is causing Dee to spin out. Dee is in love with Matt (and has been for the past year). They've both been each other's rock when they were at their lowest. Her feelings are unrequited and she doesn't want to lose him.
Through flashbacks we watch the relationship between Dee and Matt develop and begin to understand why she feels the way she does about him but also see where things went wrong ... feeling needed and being loved is not the same thing. But, it's easy to get confused about love and being a crutch or an enabler.
Friendship with Misa is another big point in this story, where did things go so wrong ??
Not wanting to ruin the special day for her two friends, Dee is torn on how to deal with her feelings for Matt while trying to be happy for Matt and Misa.
With her sister Tillie the biggest advocate for telling the truth and the advice and support of various people she meets at this destination wedding it's up to Dee to decide what's right for her even if it means that she's going to have to risk her friendship.
Heartbreaking at times and lighthearted at others this story about friendship, the relationship between sisters, acceptance, and love was definitely a worthy read !

This book was equally parts funny and endearing as it was raw and vulnerable. I loved every one of the characters - half of the time I felt like I was on vacation with them myself, sipping daiquiris with Tilley and having conversations with Dee. I think one of the biggest things I appreciated was its realism and candor while also being wildly entertaining. It had depth but a lightness to it that contradicted perfectly. Highly highly recommend.

I had no idea that this was a fairly new book! The only trigger warning I would give us I guess suicide ideation. I saw myself in Dee and I guess it make me sad because I had to face the music so to speak on where I was with my mental health and where I wanted to be. Also her feelings about Matt I totally get because that's how I am with when I like someone. It's a pretty good book

4 stars!

Wow... "Never Been Better" by Leanne Toshiko Simpson is quite the book. Don't let the bright-looking cover fool you, this is an emotional, often difficult read, that's for sure. For those wondering, I DO NOT think this book is a rom-com. There are slight romantic elements and a ton of dark humor, but it IS NOT a romantic comedy. This book focuses on mental illness, hospitalization for mental illness and su1cidal ideations, rebuilding your life after institutionalization, and moving on when you can't quite get your brain to function "properly." I feel like these are extraordinarily relevant topics for the majority of us, and this was an extremely eye-opening read. The story of Dee, Matt, and Misa is tinged with dark, self-deprecating humor, a little bit of romance, and a lot a bit of vulnerability. Dee, Matt, and Misa met at a psychiatric hospital and became fast friends. Dee wants to be more than friends with Matt as she is smitten with him. A year after their subsequent releases, Dee is still in love with Matt, but Matt is about to get married to Misa, having formed a deeper bond with her after Dee was released early from the psych ward. Dee is invited to their destination wedding and reluctantly RSVPs, attending with the intention of breaking up their relationship and stopping their wedding. She winds up attending with her sister, Tilley, and things do not go as planned. This book is a beautiful ode to figuring life out when you've been saddled with mental illness. It's almost like the bipolar version of "My Best Friend's Wedding." Each of the characters struggles in their own way, whether it be with simple things like finding a job, recovering from trauma, attempting to balance medication, not knowing what the future holds, and whether or not "getting better" is even possible. This story touched me in more ways than one. In a sense, it felt relatable, and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing?? These characters are deeply flawed and are all too aware of that fact, but are working on their recovery in different ways. This story is soft, harshly realistic, and amusing, and I think a balance is maintained well and successfully. I really liked this book, but I recognize that it won't be for everyone. Be sure to check the TWs and be sure to have tissues handy.

A well-written book with firsthand experience, so VERY realistic. The characters are therefore relatable and their feelings and issues believable. I truly enjoyed reading it.
