Fatherhood media tie-in (previously published as Two Kisses for Maddy): A Memoir of Loss & Love Kindle Edition

The #1 hit movie on Netflix starring Kevin Hart, based on the courageous and searingly honest memoir about the first year of the author's life following the birth of his daughter and the death of his wife.

Matt and Liz Logelin were high school sweethearts. After years of long-distance dating, the pair finally settled together in Los Angeles, and they had it all: a perfect marriage, a gorgeous new home, and a baby girl on the way. Liz's pregnancy was rocky, but they welcomed Madeline, beautiful and healthy, into the world. Just twenty-seven hours later, Liz suffered a pulmonary embolism and died instantly, without ever holding the daughter whose arrival she had so eagerly awaited.

Though confronted with devastating grief and the responsibilities of a new and single father, Matt did not surrender to devastation; he chose to keep moving forward—to make a life for Maddy.

In this memoir, Matt shares bittersweet and often humorous anecdotes of his courtship and marriage to Liz; of relying on his newborn daughter for the support that she unknowingly provided; and of the extraordinary online community of strangers who have become his friends. In honoring Liz's legacy, heartache has become solace.

Review

"TWO KISSES FOR MADDY is less a conscious piece of writing than a spontaneous eruption from the heart. It will make you cry but not only out of sadness. Some of your tears will be for the beauty of love and its miraculous power to heal even the deepest wounds." -John Grogan, New York Times bestselling author of MARLEY & ME

"No one wants to read a depressing book. But how can you possibly call
depressing what is so filled with love and life and the unstoppable message of how lucky we are to have what we have. Read this book and put your life back in perspective." -Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author of HEROES FOR MY SON

"Heartbreaking, raw, moving and uplifting at the same time." -
The Hollywood Reporter

"A tender memoir that combines the deep sadness of loss with the joys of parenthood even under incredibly trying circumstances." -
Kirkus Reviews

"Almost unparalleled as a raw and unapologetic portrait of grief, TWO KISSES FOR MADDY is a stunning testimony of the kind of love-- fated, magnificent-- that inspires novels. So vivid, so powerful and pitch-perfect, is his evocation of his beloved Liz that I could hear her laughter and see her face for days after putting the book down."
-Claire Fontaine, national bestselling author of COME BACK

"In Matthew Logelin's honest and poignant story, we learn a great many lessons about the fragility of life, and about the strength we all can summon to move forward. With two kisses and an open heart, he shows how love can sustain us." -
Jeffrey Zaslow, New York Times bestselling coauthor of THE LAST LECTURE

I'm giving two stars because my first impression of this book is junk. Maybe purchase from a different seller or something. And what's worse ?? I didn't get an invoice or receipt. I wouldn't send it back anyway because I can still read it. Just a heads up. Hope the book is good though.

I first started reading Matt's blog when Maddy was just a few months old. His raw emotion had me hooked from the start. I don't know how he feels, but I know how I have felt over the past decade since the untimely death of my twenty year old brother. This is not a grief manual. It's a brilliantly written memoir.
He states on page 221 that he "had definitely learned since Liz died, that everyone grieves differently." On the following page he writes "Life goes on, whether or not we expect it to." No truer words have ever been spoken regarding grief!

A day turns into a week. A week into a year, and one day you realize it's been over 10 years since the greatest loss of your life and it's OK to laugh and be happy again. It's OK not to cry every day. It's OK that life goes on. It's also OK that a wave of emotion takes over when you least expect it to! A part of you dies with the one you love, but a part of them lives on through you.

This book is a beautiful tribute for Matt's gorgeous wife Liz, and more importantly, a way for their precious daughter to see the love her father will always have for her mother. It's a love story for both Liz and Maddy. I laughed and cried and was reminded how precious and fragile life truly is. I read the book in less than 27 hours. The same amount of time that Matt's life was changed forever. You won't be able to put it down!

Thank you Matt for writing this book! You are doing a fantastic job with Maddy and as a long time blog reader, I'm so very proud of you! This is a must read for everyone!

LOVED! I cried, I laughed, I felt anger for Matt and Maddy! Life is not fair. I'm so happy Matt had so much support and the will power to move forward, for Maddy. Boy is he doing a great job! For those complaining that he repeated a few things or the occasional use of the F word. Do you live under a rock? Its the F word, big deal! This is a memoir on loss and love, a 'memoir' hence it wouldn't be his story if he didn't stay true to himself. Also dont expect much update on Maddy's life, its more of how Matt adjusted to life as a newly single father/widower and the love between Matt and Liz. By the way he states at the beginning of the book that he isn't a writer, so cut him some slack. In any case, I wish I knew this book existed sooner. As a parent one of my biggest fears is dying when my kids are small. So this book really hit a nerve but it also gave me some peace, hope in humanity and the community to help a fellow human in such a devastating time. I truly enjoyed this book. I have to go check out his blog now! Please read!

This book is so real and honest. It broke my heart, made me laugh and uplifted my soul at the same time. This book is a must read for anyone going through a loss such as this and anyone who needs a wake-up call to cherish life now, today.
Everyone grieves in a different way. Yes, there are f-words in this book so be warned if you are prone to take offense. But on a personal note, my husband and I speak like this all the time at home and we are graduate-educated people. We are prone to using curse words on a daily basis to express incredulity, pain, fear, frustration, anger and disgust. So I completely understand the author's use of this language to emote as he traveled through grief, hope and beyond.
In 2009 I almost died after the delivery of our daughter via emergency c-section and she was 33 weeks also. She was in the NICU for a month and as I struggled for my life, my husband was left to make lonely pilgrimages to the NICU. I felt like I was walking with Matt through some of these experiences. I read and read, deep into the night, crying, laughing and ultimately smiling for Matt and Maddy. What an incredible feat of strength it must have taken to write this book. I think it serves as a monumental memorial for Matt's wife Liz, a cherished chronicle of love for his daughter Maddy and a life-lesson in perspective for us all.

This is a compelling story that is hard to put down. The writing is honest, gritty and rough. Perhaps his carefree and almost feckless existence is what Liz found compelling in the first place; He seems amiable and fixable, someone that required her bridling ability and matched her very ordered abilites. His seeming helplessness when it came to child rearing also hightened his grieving sense of loss when Liz died. Matt's ability to recall details and events is impressive. And in his gritty style, he articulates his loss in an honest way.

What I found missing from this story is hope. Not the kind of hope that is placed the possibility that lies before our children as we imagine them growing up and needing us less and less each day. Perhaps this missing hope lies in a state of being so focused on self and our personal events instead of in a higher power that can see us through horrific events and experiences our feelings with us. While I admire Matt's courage in navigating his horrific turn of events, I could also have imagined a very different outcome when placing his questions, doubt, fears, and anxiety in the hands of the risen Savior. Is it possible to experience peace in the midst of a storm? Questions that could be asked of God about events like this like are found in the Psalms (Psalm 22), Job (Job 2:10), or in the story of Jonah (Jonah 2:1-2). The turning point for Matt seems to be when he realizes that the outpouring of love and money sent his way could actually be used to help and support others. So as not to sound like a religious fanatic, the real point of Jesus entering our world was to establish a ministry of reconciliation: both between God and man, and between man and mankind (male and female). If God is in our relationships, we can then place our pain and suffering in His hands, too. We may never understand why tragic events are allowed to happen (they happen to everyone), but knowing that Emmanual (God with us) walks with us and shares in our pain allows for healing and hope. We can offer the gift of reconciliation to others as God's grace is freely given to us.

I am compelled to pray for Maddie and Matt and that the Grace of God and the Holy Spirit continues to minister to them as their story unfolds in the future.

I pretty much cried from start to finish. Very well written and it's certainly a journey. Book details, the relationship leading up to marriage, the death of Matt's wife just after the birth of their daughter, Maddie, and the year following her death as he navigates being a single father. Really heartbreaking.

Much better than the movie. Really pulls at the heartstrings.

I found this book browsing a website showing "books turned into motion pictures" or something like it. And since usually the book is better than the screenplay - I downloaded the sample - eventually bought the book.

This is a heartbreaking story and a lot of reviews already say this... if you let yourself get submerged in Matt's pain of losing his wife when the baby they've been so much looking forward to holding in their arms has just been born, you will be able to cry start to finish.

It is a wonderful story about a father trying to cope with the loss of the love of his life and the responsibilities of a single dad at the same time.

I have never suffered a comparable loss and I mean no disrespect - but for my taste it was just a dozen times too often - I did this with her - I saw her here - this is her picture - I miss her so much...

In terms of coming to terms with this terrible situation Matt is a role model and I have the deepest admiration for how he managed - and used the money he got through his blog (and I assume through this book) to help others in similar situations who maybe didn't have his amazing support group of family and friends.
