In an age when telling the wrong joke or using the wrong pronoun can cost you your career, Quillette magazine - founded in 2015 by Australian-based journalist Claire Lehmann - has provided a forum for thinkers of all political stripes to push back against the forces of intellectual conformity. Panics and Persecutions brings together a collection of especially compelling Quillette narratives, spanning subcultures from computer science to romance literature. These stories lay bare the human toll of modern ideological inquisitions, often in deeply personal terms-and demonstrate the urgency of Quillette's editorial mission to create a space where free thought lives. Edited by Claire Lehmann, Colin Wright, Jamie Palmer, Jonathan Kay and Toby Young.

Review

For those who feel that academia and journalism are losing their minds, Quillette has offered lungfuls of fresh air - reasoned, nondogmatic, and often common-sense analyses that have been banished from the mainstream outlets. This timely collection showcases some of the new voices it has discovered, while spotlighting the repressive and regressive forces that are imposing orthodoxies on intellectual life.-Steven Pinker

Halfway through this gripping and disturbing book you will vow never to set foot on another university campus. You will recognize that North American academia is in the grip of a hideous mania, a cross between the early-modern witch craze and Mao's Cultural Revolution, in which implacable zealots conduct grotesque show trials, innocent individuals have their reputations, careers and sanity destroyed, and everyone else cowers, terrified that they will be next to be 'canceled'. But then you read on and realize this mania is now everywhere where people with college degrees gather, even if only to discuss knitting. No journal has done more than Quillette to expose the injustices of the 'Great Awokening'. One of many benefits of this invaluable compendium of cancelation is that you begin to see more clearly the distinctive patterns of the pathology.- Niall Ferguson

We are living through an intellectual crisis. The woke ideology is overwhelming our cultural and political institutions, as well as captivating many of the young minds in our society. But, in these pages, you will find ordinary people standing up for what is right. Our society needs individuals like these who have thecourage of conviction and commitment to liberty and equality for all. Each of the 21 essays enclosed provides a portrait and defense of liberal values, not just in revisiting the arguments and principles of a free society, but also in that these individuals are making the arguments at risk of themselves being cancelled, shamed or punished in various ways. They are willing to pay the price to passthe banner of freedom onto the next generation. These authors are living, breathing examples of how to fight for Enlightenment values and how to do it with dignity and civility.- Ayaan Hirsi Ali

This collection of essays paint a poignant picture of the destructive force that is Cancel Culture on our society and how far reaching its tentacles of censorship and ruin truly reach. From academia to knitting groups, I was amazed to learn how much control the cancel mob truly weilds over the every-day lives of regular individuals. These are the stories you don't get to read about in mainstream media.

I just received my hardcover copy a few days ago, and I highly recommend this book. It is a hefty volume at 400-plus pages, and well worth the price.
The 20 essays are nonfiction narratives. They each tell a story about cancel culture, character assassination, and authoritarianism in the current woke/Social Justice movement. The tales are gripping and keep the reader engaged. Although told in different voices, they hang together well and are ordered and selected in such a way that the stories build on one another. Readers of the online journal Quillette will recognize these essays as previously published in the last couple of years. Part of what makes them worth reading (again) is that most come with a postscript that updates the story to September of 2020. Including those updates was an excellent choice of the editors and adds credibility to the well-reported and edited journalistic pieces.
The book also features a new introduction that sets the tone for the book. One of the most tragic and harrowing essays involved the celebrated Canadian writer Steven Galloway, who was falsely accused of rape as he endured several years of what can only be described as a horror story. The postscript is good.
A more tragic-comic tale is The Knitting Wars, which combines three lengthy articles, 35 pages of text, relating a witch-hunt-like drama in the knitting industry and culture that took place on Instagram, spilling over into a real-world conference in 2019. This beautifully reported story cannot be put down.
It’s a good book to share with people. I plan to send it to a few friends and family, recommending that they start with one of the best essays and if it captures their attention, to start from the beginning. I’ve been reading books on Kindle but I’m glad to have this one in hardcover. It’s an altogether handsome volume with an appealing cover and type. Buy it.

A timely examination of Cancel Culture, and the grasping ambition so often masked by its moral pretensions.

I highly recommend this book (I am reading the eBook but plan to invest in at least one hard copy to share with others). It collects a variety of accounts, some of which have received wide media attention but some of which are new to me (or are given in detail, by those caught in them or others near to them, or have been updated since other media coverage ended). All the accounts are well written and highly informative --names, dates, quotes, text, outcomes-- and thus instruct the reader both in what happened and what CAN happen if innocent or incautious words are seized upon by the feral mob. The book will not encourage you to think that the current madness will abate anytime soon; in fact it seems to be feeding on itself (thanks, Twitter! Thanks, supine teachers and administrators of our educational complex!). But forewarned is forearmed, and it may help you avoid trouble, and make stronger points against the Wokies and those who tolerate or encourage them.

We found this to be informative, accurate, and sadly true, racism is racism, you cannot condone some racism or some discrimination. we are should be judging on the content of character and not by the color of skin.

It was riddled with misinformation, fear mongering, and plain old bigotry. 5 stars of buying it for the conservative uncle in your life, -2 for any other person you know or met in real life.

Not my favorite book. A bathroom read, maybe? I wouldn't buy it again, but interesting enough to check out from a library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely and informative book, really glad to have read it

My daughter told me that "cancel culture isn't a thing. I'd observed some snippets in the media which suggested otherwise, so was very interested to read this when it came out.
In summary, really interesting and varied examples in many fields, each one a massive miscarriage of natural justice perpetrated by people who would claim to be really interested in social justice. From the anthropologist who reported the violence and deaths in the tribes he studied, breaking the line that only capitalism causes violence, to the poet who was falsely accused by a lover.
Each one seems an example of what is happening to less famous voices daily.
If we can see the symptoms clearly, maybe we can find a cure to the disease.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personal accounts at the new front line of the Culture War
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 2, 2021
Personal accounts of people who have had their lives turned over by the rise of 'Cancel Culture'. A particular type of personalised bullying that rakes over the individuals personal life to smear in the public because they hold the wrong opinion. Some of these are chilling in how they isolate the victim and remove their primary form of livelihood. Already the term 'cancel culture' has been appropriated and stretched by those who practice it best - it now means any form of ignoring or boycotting, which is different to the deeply personal assassination and targeted abuse that is illustrated in this book.
