Frederick Sandys was known for his outstanding capabilities as both a painter and draughtsman. Acquired in June 2019, this full-scale preliminary drawing was finally reunited with its final version, the oil painting "Ysoude and the Love Philtre," which has been in the Ponce collection since 1970. The meticulous detail of the drawing demonstrates Sandys' capabilities in this medium but also provides insight into the artist's creative process. In addition to this cartoon, Sandys completed two head studies (now in private collections).
