What Became of Us

by Shayan Lotfi
directed by Jennifer Chang

atlantic stage 2

May 17 – june 29, 2024

We are happy to welcome back Shayan Lotfi (First Gen MixFest 2022) for his Off-Broadway debut directed by Jennifer Chang (The Far Country at Berkeley Rep).

More Info

Two siblings.
One born there. One born here.
How do they maintain their connections to The Old Country, and to This Country, and to each other?

In alignment with the playwright’s vision, this unique production featured two separate casts: one featuring Rosalind Chao and BD Wong, and the other featuring Shohreh Aghdashloo and Tony Shalhoub.
Rosalind Chao & BD Wong performed May 17 – June 15, 2024. Shohreh Aghdashloo & Tony Shalhoub performed June 10 – June 29, 2024.
BOTH CASTS performed in succession June 11–13, 2024. For four performances only, both casts performed back-to-back as an exclusive double-feature event!

Reviews

“A tender, beautiful play.

The chance to see the two casts take their turn on this material might be
the theatrical must-see of the year.

Chao and Wong turn in some of the loveliest work on a New York stage
right now.

What Became of Us is a gift to immigrants and families.”

JUAN RAMIREZ, theATRELY

“Excellent performances!

This thoughtful and heartfelt sibling drama well worth a revisit.

ZACHARY STEWART, THEATERMANIA

“Smart and elegant playwriting. Excellent company.

The author provides a gently touching work of universal appeal.”

MICHAEL SOMMERS, NEW YORK STAGE REVIEW

“Simply yet smartly directed by Jennifer Chang.

Lotfi’s celebration and rumination on both the big and small moments and memories of his two characters are brought vividly to life by the engaging yet completely down-to-earth Rosalind Chao and the more emotional and flamboyant BD Wong.”

BRIAN SCOTT LIPTON, CITITOUR

“Lotfi’s script is beautifully poetic.

Chao exudes warmth and perfectly fits her character. Wong brings levity and laughter.”

ALLISON CONSIDINE, NEW YORK THEATRE GUIDE

What Became of Us is a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.
